Rikk
Hi all, So I would really like to make my own board to play on. I have a nice board that I got on an old Kickstarter and I’ve been glueing and painting lots of pre-bought mdf buildings and crates to make a city/dock theme, but I’d really like to make a board from scratch. Something I can really get creative with and hopefully have a lot of fun making. As I’m also playing and really enjoying Gremlins this year, it only seems right I should work on a Bayou swamp themed board. EDIT: I’m going to keep this section of the first post with WIP to date pic In preparation I have made some attempts (still WIP) of small hazardous terrain swamps as a bit of a tester. Here is a cut of mdf which I will add air dry putty to (uhu glue to mdf) The putty then gets pressed down (A little water helps smooth things out) I then got a bit carried away and painted a dark brown and added some resin water effects So it’s not a bad start, I will get out the dremel and file down the sides, paint, add texture and flock before adding more resin to top up the water level. I went for a murky brown water colour that matches the bases of my Gremlins.
Rikk
While searching online for suitable materials for the board itself.... I’m now a bit lost, I’d like to make a 3.5 x 3.5 foot board or maybe a 4 x 4 to give space past the play area for putting down cards, etc. The board itself needs to be fairly thick as to take all the terrain and be able to last, I’d also like to build around the edge of the 3 x 3 feet play area so I can fill inside with cork and make some inbuilt rivers/wetlands. With this in mind, I have no idea what type of wood to get, shops in U.K. have Hardboard, mdf, chipboard, etc. Could I ask everyone for advice please? thanks
Omenbringer
Those scatter pieces are a good start. I might suggest you play with the paints rather than just going "murky brown". When I did mine I used a couple different paints (greens, yellows, and browns over a black primer) and stippled them over one another to create the illusion of depth in my shallow resin pools. I can post some pictures later if you want, but I think it really makes the water features believable. In regards to base materials for your future table I would suggest perhaps using smaller floor tiles instead of one large wood piece. When I had my old 3' by 3' tables they were a pain to transport and store. They were always in the way and also quickly staled because they couldn't easily be altered (assuming you are including fixed terrain features). This is why I switched to smaller tiles or roll up mats (they aren't difficult to make yourself if you want a natural look). Vinyl floor tiles work really well and are fairly light but can curl if you plan on using lots of glue without a thicker insulation foam (1 inch works really well) on top. You can go with 12" by 12" or 18" by 18". The demo board I created uses a single 18" by 18" vinyl floor tile with 1" pink insulation foam on top. There is plenty of room to dig features into and it is sturdy enough to travel. Smaller tiles just increase the portability and modularity (increasing replayability) of the table. If you want I can show you a larger city board I did a while ago, though that is when I figured out you had to use 1" foam over the top to prevent curling of the corners if you were gluing down substrate (still looks good though). Rikk
@Treehouse great vid, I’m unsure with the volume of foliage/grass in that vid but the principle is great. @Omenbringer thanks for the advice, still unsure how best to progress, love the idea of a folding table (bendyboard would have been ideal but not made anymore). here is my progress so far, display board and finished swamp ponds. I did stick to a darker murkier brown for the ponds but tried a lighter colour water for the board
lusciousmccabe
Like the half-submerged jetty thing. Looks great. Is the plan to fill in all the cavity areas with water effect?
Rikk
@lusciousmccabe Hi, the circular parts inc in water at front right of picture is where the bases fit. I rushed this and a big learning curve for next one (already have another on the go) will be to take more time and be able to have more ground water across a larger part. Currently with this one it’s too high and poorly cut to have more water effects across the board so it’s more just stepped mudbanks
Rikk
Kind of a terrain piece, can leave it as a bit of blocking terrain, but it’s meant to be used in supply wagon strategy. Really pleases how it turned out and got a best painted at tournament for it (tournament best painted format was for best painted supply wagon which I thought was a great idea for a variation to the standard best crew). Going to start on a bayou village tonight
Rikk
Two great swamp village buildings from Sarrisa Going to let them ‘air’ for the day to get the burnt smell away, will then start on paint and build
Rikk
Some small progress with one of the shacks. I’m going to cut cardboard slats for roof and overlap to add to the 3D effect along with the corrugated (yay for spell checker) iron sheet for porch roof. some of this is glued, rest is dry fit as I’ll need to paint it before glueing together.
Rikk
More progress (day off work) and totally getting carried away with this so Ulix crew is not getting finished one side complete and starting to paint, not keen on the green, think I’ll turn it more a slate colour and have some green tint Im going to orange/brown rust affect the corrugated porch roof and add a similar one to part of roof on the other side
Rikk
Getting carried away. Need to finish before painting happy with how the roof has turned out, used a straw cut in half to seal the top of the roof
Rikk
Silly amount of updates today, have been very motivated Have base coated everything now added shading to the roof and will really take my time lighting each tile happy with the rust effect on the porch roof still have a long way to go with the wood on the house and the base needs sorting out. Aim to complete with 7 days from now...
lusciousmccabe
Cool idea with the mixed materials on the roof. Makes it look very thrown together, in a good way.
Rikk
Thanks. Im please how the rust turned out The roof is pretty much finished now, some additional slime patches, tufts of grass/lichen and maybe a small highlight on the roof slats I still need some more ivy and moult patches to add but the shack itself is about 95% done Next step will be to complete the base including steps, small pond around steps and some bushes. I think a barrel or three of moon shine left about too.
Rikk
Only found time for some additional foliage and extra bit of slime on the roof so far
Omenbringer
Great looking building. The accent pieces add a lot without being over done.
Rikk
Not much of an update as have been away but working on some more terrain pieces, still no start on a gaming table yet
Rikk
Hi all, A fair bit of progress with these terrain pieces Ill spend today filing down the sides of all three terrain pieces then I’m happy to start painting this one up. The tree I’m really happy with and have been a bit carried away painting before completing the base. This is the last pond piece I’m having for my board. I have another house to put together and then want to make some blocking terrain, I’m thinking; Moonshine still wooded area pig den Loot tower/horde/pile o’ crap
Rikk
Some more painting done before packing for holiday I have a fair bit of weathering effects to go and still need to sand down the sides before I can add water effects but should be complete by end of month
lusciousmccabe
Pile o' crap! Pile o' crap! Pile o' crap! Seriously though, these are great. Keep 'em coming.
Rikk
Some more progress (time ticking away to U.K. Nationals and I’d really like to take a board along to support as many attendees as possible, and they have a cool board to play games at home with) I Just need to rust out the roof and blend some mud below roof and then a final layer of water effects on the pond which I’ll do after holidays Tree just need more water effects and possibly some more leaf foliage, I’m unsure with this bit Most of the terrain so far
lusciousmccabe
I think the tree looks great. If you're adding more water maybe muddy up around the water-line tie it together.
Rikk
@lusciousmccabe Good idea with blending the banks, I’ll def do that. Have just measured a 50mm base against a GW wood scenic base, doesn’t quite match up 😕 Im going to be making some blocking terrain using symbols of authority markers that can be taken off and used independently for the strategy. They will be; 1 pile o’ loot 1 pile o’ crap 1 tbc - was thinking a moon shine still but that will need more than a 50mm base... any suggestions for last marker? prof_bycid
1 hour ago, Rikk said: any suggestions for last marker? Maybe a duck-hunting blind made of sticks and reeds? This could tie in nicely some of the hunting-themed gremlin models.
