Models with two mele attacks and disengaging strike

sergi79

Question

Hi,

I have a doubt that has arisen today during a game.

Mei Feng has two mele attacks, one with range 2 and other with range 3. Imagine that, two inches from her is a model engage to her (who has range 1). Such model, can perform a walk action around Mei Feng , as long as it does not leave the range of mele of this one. What would be that mele range, two or three?

To sum up: When a model has mele attacks with different ranges, what value is taken as its mele range when calculating the disengaging strike?

Your engagement range is equal to the range of the longest ranged :melee attack you have (pg 44 big rulebook). A model could freely walk anywhere within 3" of Mei Feng and you would be unable to take a disengaging strike to stop them.

However, if a model within 1" of Mei Feng declared it wished to leave her engagement range, you could take a disengaging strike with either attack as they are both in range. "the enemy models that are engaged with the moving model may choose to take a free Attack Action with any one Close (:melee) Attack which the disengaging model is in range of" (pg 44 big rulebook).

This matters because for example in Mei Feng's case Jackhammer Kick pushes her into base contact, which you may not want to do, while Tiger Claw does not. Other models such as Moon Shinobis have a higher Ml stat on one of their attacks and so would prefer to use that.

(note that :melee means Close attack, not Melee attack, the majority of Melee attacks are :melee attacks, but there are plenty of Cast and Shooting :melee attacks as well, and the occasional Melee attack that is not :melee)
