Unappreciated but effective

Greetings fellow Thunderites!

So I know there are several of you out there who are as obsessive as I am in owning all the things and you have the entire 10T faction...

Or maybe you don't but you have some niche models that you swear by that don't see the light of day with other 10T players.

This is your call out.

I have been theorycrafting hard (been on the road for work recently) for my mainstays for this year and I'm looking to go hardcore Brewmaster, Shenlong and McCabe/Lynch (still undecided).

But here's what I'm looking for: little used models and why I should give them some love. We have quite a few "shelf" models in my opinion. 10T Archers, High River Monks, Tengu, Fuhatsu, Yamaziko... the list goes on and on. I want to take underused models and put them in and try to get the feel of when are they awesome?

So what underappreciated, but effective, synergies are you all seeing these days? Doesn't have to be for the master's I've listed, but obviously bonus if they are :D

I'll start off with one of my favorites:

Ten Thunder Archers with McCabe. Two of the biggest issues with the Archers is that they have no melee and don't have enough mobility for their abilities. What better than a situation where you can solve both!

One thing that is very common with me is to jam McCabe in with Promises and go defensive.  He is surprisingly durable in that state... especially with a Strangemetal Shirt! This gives a very clear vantage for using the 10T Archer to shoot into melee with him, and his ability to push them, give them nimble etc... is just money.  Toss on their upgrade because they are GOING to be in position.  I find people often forget also that they ignore intervening models for LoS... so you can block LoS to them with, say Mounted McCabe, and they can still shoot "through" him. Also on a crow they can slow their target, and that can potentially play into McCabe's netgun.

Worst case, if you need them to get in the thick, toss them a saber and use that 8" charge!!!  Sure they are going to die most likely, but if it means the difference between scoring a VP or not...

With such an aggressive and mobile list, I have always enjoyed running one with McCabe.

So come on! Who are your unappreciated but effective models?

It just so happens that I played Fuhatsu today, and on top of it, the crew was led by McCabe, so here you go...

We all know that Fuhatsu isn't great, but if you give him a little love, he can be quite an annoyance. Fuhatsu had A memory of honor and peaceful waters as upgrades. McCabe tossed him the Badge of Speed and, every now and then, te elixir of live. In addition, the Emissary cheered him on. Though he didn't profit from the push, he likes the fast quite well. Suddenly, you have a model that can nimble forward an then take 3 shots at 12" with positive flips and 5 damage on moderate damage! My opponent (who knows my general thoughts on Fuhatsu) was quite taken aback and lost a Ronin first turn after daring a bit too far forward. He performed really well the whole game, picking off targets while appearing close to immortal (armour +2, Hard to wound, juggernaught, Kamaitachi, Elixir and Low River monk make him quite a beast to take down).

Sadly, I know enough models that would perform equally well or even better with that much support (Dawn Serpent could even get reactivate from the Badge of Speed before tossing it and can be protected by a Terracotta Warrion with ancient protection), but still, I liked playing him, and I really like the model.

Torakage don't seem to get that much love. With Agile they're hard to tie down and that often matters when scheming. Ml5 with :+fate is very hand independent when it comes to hitting. 1/3/5 damage with :+fate makes that moderate of 3 common enough and damage is usually cheatable if it matters for VP. Reliable little goons.

Are Samurai still unappreciated? I guess not.

I've always felt like Samurai were considered to be... yet so many people swear by them, myself included... so I don't know, haha!

I love taking an extra wound Samurai with my support masters who have Misdirection... handy little guys... with gatling guns :D

I really need to find a good proxy for this guy... if I had a proxy, I'd run him more. That moderate of 5 just seems so tasty!

I also think a lot of our models are undervalued and like to find interesting ways to use them.

Units that I find are undervalued.

Oiran: Oiran provide amazing road blocks and Wp support. I always take 2 against Neverborn and Outcasts who charge a lot and Where Wp tests are prevalent
Fermented River Monks w/ Brewmaster or Shenlong; the ability to reactivate every turn deal 4 min damage and attack Df and Wp is crushing. and shenlong and Brewmaster make this plus healing possible add in a Performer and you can kill anything in the game

Fuhatsu: I only use him with Close, Flank Deployment but he can hold an entire area down by himself

Tengu are great flankers or great at playing the mid field when you play super aggresive crews.

Archers are great in Guard the Stash where they can hide and screw with your opponents day or with Mei who can take metal gamin to make them Df 6

Yamaziko is a good back up for crews with to cover the rest of the crew in a similary way.

Torakage: Ideal for flanking where they can "Intercept" any give Scheme Runner and run their own schemes.

I have not fouind a use for High River Monks or Bunraku as they don't do anything another unit can't do better.

One of my favorite "janky" combos goes like this:

Jacob Lynch Wings of Wind, Blot Out the Sky, Recalled Training/4ss
Hungering Darkness - Recalled Training 1ss
Fuhatsu - A Memory of Honor, Hidden Agenda/10ss
Yamaziko - Smoke & Shadows, Smoke Grenades/ 9ss
Thunders Archer 7ss
Oiran x2/10ss
~5ss - maybe Terracotta Warrior? Or even better, a Guild Pathfinder to have summonable Shadow Stride spawn nodes (6ss)/

The idea is that you have different specialists covering each others' backs:
- A juggernaut that sticks into the opponent's face like a sore thumb and buffs your scheme runners with every hit
- A package that provides some defense against WP attacks, charges and shooting: Oiran's auras + Disguised + Brace Yari + Smoke Grenades + Smoke Bombs
- Decent scheme runners that occasionally disappear in a puff of smoke
- An out of LoS fire support that can cover Hollow Waifs, finish up wounded models and lay some blasts on otherwise hard to get targets or on mob clusters
- Finally, the usual Lynch/Huggs combo with a twist: Wings on Wind is great on an otherwise slow Master and also gives him the option to do movement support in addition to card manipulation and burst damage
- Huggy is slippery as hell if you are careful :P

Edit: Samurai can be a situational great pick and are very fun (if not strictly competitive) model as well. On the other hand, one model I could never find I would take other that matches with beginners are the High River Monks. I voted to have them buffed in the last poll, while almost everyone and their grandma said "Buff Low Rivers!". Oh well. I might as well start trying to build another "janky" list with a Samurai or two and two HR Monks to utilize ace draw-discard. .52 Pickup is so much fun in the off-cases that it works ^_^

The Samurai of Earth model is suitably large... mount him on the right base on an elevation and jobs a good 'un!

Yeah, I'd thought about that. I'm just worried about my opponents confusing it for an actual samurai.  Need to find another huge guy with a gatling gun!

I use samurai all the time with Lynch, usually just one. But man that ace hunting! And yeah, I am kind of hoping someone will have some magical amazing-ness for HRM... but it's a vane hope. They do combo well with Obsidian Oni, but that's a 12ss package and they die to a stiff breeze :(

  • 2 weeks later...

I did do a gunline list once led by shenlong and sensei yu

had fuhatsu, a samurai and 2 katanakas.

fast fuhatsu, pushed/fast samurai or katanakas is pretty awesome, with some free focus too

best thing was people thinking its a gunline (like guild) so just engage it, but these guys are all as good if not better in melee
