Advice on next purchase

So I have the Hired Swords box, Vanessa, and the upgrade decks. Now what? I'm looking at possibly:

Big Jake, since a resurrecting schemer is neat
Desperate Mercenaries, for cheap dudes on the table
Lazarus, for hanging out with Vanessa
Convict Gunslingers, for getting shooty dudes

Big Jake and Lazarus are both excellent, even if they fit different roles in a crew. Convict Gunslingers are really good, but they're slow - if the schemes are such that your opponent comes to you, they are pretty great, and return fire is pretty good on them (howling wolf tattoo is also nice on Vanessa with gunsljngers).

Desperate Mercenaries, on the other hand, are almost certainly the worst way to spend 4SS in the game. They do literally nothing, except occasionally give you a partial refund on their SS cost so you don't feel quite so bad hiring them. The models are beautiful, so if you want to paint a nice model by all means pick them up, but they are so so bad in the game. If you want a 4SS hire get void wretches or winged plagues - at least they can run schemes!

You can get desperate mercs for cheap dudes who do absolutely nothing....or void wretches or winged plagues for cheap things which are actually useful :P

the others are all solid options.  Hannah can do some fun things with the Viks too.

Malifaux Child, I would very highly recommend.  I prefer him to student of conflict.  Sure, Student has some more movement tricks, but Child can do one of the master's cast, to save her an AP and keep buffing pointy Vik.

Also, MC can heal Vanessa, which then heals all the others - I like to keep MC and Vanessa off to the side somewhere away from anything which can hurt me.

Johan is always a good shout as he is relatively cheap at 6 stones and brings a lot to the table. He has a very average WP and DF, both being 5 but does have 8 wounds and hard to kill what helps with durability.  He has a respectable Ml of 6 with his relic hammer which has a 3" engagement range  and a decent damage track of 3/4/6 with the double positive flips to damage against any models with the Construct or Tyrant characteristic. He also has the option to take 3 Ml APs against the same target with Flurry making him no slouch at offence. He can also just yell off conditions with his Rebel Yell and is an all around solid option for any crew.

Malifaux Child is surprisingly not bad with the Viks as he can copy one of Ashes 1AP cast actions at -3 cast but with a positive flip. Seeing as Sisters in Battle and Sisters in Fury are both 1AP cast actions he can cast either of them helping to free up an AP for Ashes. For 2 stones he's easy to fit in this crew and with being manipulative 15 he's not bad on the defence side either, he also has the ability to heal friendly models but it's not very reliable but is still worth a mention. In my opinion I think he's a strict upgrade from the Student.

Wokou Raiders can be good fun with the Viks. They are Ml 6 minions with a positive flip built in to their attack with a healthy damage track of 2/4/5. They have a range of triggers as well with their Ml  but their Coordinated Raid trigger on a mask really shines in a Viks crew. The trigger is after damaging an enemy model another friendly model engaged with the target can take a free 1AP Ml attack. Who doesn't love an out of activation attack with one of the sisters or even Johan? More impotently is their durability in combat, the Wokou Raiders are quite the tar pits in close combat. Enemy models can't cheat against them if targeting their DF and they also have Bulletproof +1. They kind of excel in games of Squatter Rights as they just sit and score VP's all day long and are also quite maneuverable with extra pushes thanks to synergies with scheme markers. Their 0 also makes schemes like Leave Your Mark a breeze.

Those three models all regularly make it in to my Viks lists and all play solid roles but it really does come down to personal preference I feel. I hope this was in anyway helpful dude.

Forgot about Sue, which I think will be the next addition. Solid shooting, and a grab-bag of fun actions. Hurt also looks like it would work well with I Pay Better. Honestly I have next to no interest in the Malifaux Child, I like the Student. Fast from the Student is still an AP gain for Viktoria, and she can give it to other models if needed and comes with a 2/3/4 Ml attack that benefits from the Sister buffs.

The Viks have an interesting effect since they're so independant from their Crew, there's no real obvious next purchase. The only Characteristics they work off of are Sister and Mercenary, one of which is only on four models (three of which you already have from the starter) and the other is basically everything in-faction. Compared to Lucius, Dreamer, Lynch, von Schill, Tara, pretty much every Master really, the Viktorias play just as well with anything as anything else.

I think of the Viktorias as almost interchangeable with Von Schill. He's a bit tougher in scenarios when you want your master to hang around, and shooty where Vik is choppy, while the Viks are more when you want something chopped, and don't care about your master's survival provided they kill what they need to before dying.

Hence the Hired Guns being (in my mind) the Viktoria upgrade box.

Agreed trapper and Librarian are too good to ignore for the Viktorias and specialist is highly under rated.

In most factions the best expansion is a crew box until you have at least 3 master options then fill in the gaps from there.

Some Outcast masters are islands on there own but I would probably suggest Von schill and then maybe Parker for expanding your skill set while giving you "some" interchangeable models.

Yeah, von Schill's box is often recommended.  Trapper is a good addition to any crew, and the librarian...well, some people love running librarian and Vanessa.  I have never seen that combination do anything other than die expensively.

How do you run Specialist to make him useful?  He'd have to be one of the most hated Outcasts models on here, I reckon....

Specialist is not good in a Von Schill list. He's too slow compared to the rest of the units Von Schill likes. On the other hand, Parker with his pushes, or Hamelin with his obeys, or Jack Daw with pushes and obeys, can get some mileage out of him. Of course Sonnia in Guild likes having more fire thrown around too.

He can be made fast by Tara or student, pushed around or dragged along to deal with his low walk, his low df is another matter.

He is great against crews that like to cluster and crews that like to hand out slow or paralyze.

He can remove corpses, scrap and scheme markers and even cause horror duels.

His issues are that he is a model that requires set up/strategical placement and that at 8 stones he has a lot of competition with so many good out cast models in the 8-10 range.

Making him an interesting but under used tool box of goodies.

His gun is really powerful, his anti-slow will make him good vs Nellie, but Df 4 on a model that explodes is a joke. Still, I will try to use him this year because there's nothing more fun than screaming UNLEASH ZEE FLAMMENWERFER
