I think that I am finally recovering from my Burnoutfaux and started thinking about getting into the game again. I am not touching Arcanists again and it seems that everyone is playing Guild in my community, so this leaves me with Ressers, as I always wanted to start an undead "army"......eeeer....crew I mean. As you know, the problem with this is that our rotting friends are probably the most expensive faction on Moneyfaux (honest typo I swear!) This time I want to break my usual pattern of going all out and start small and build slowly from there. But how do you start (relatively) small with Ressers and having a competitive sellections of models?

I get a feeling that Seamus is the answer, but I have played him a bit and in the end he bored me to tears. Maybe he will feel fresh if I play him now, so he is not entirely out of the question. Kirai looks super fun to play and paint and getting her themathic models isn't an insane investment, but how does she fare as a single master? Any other options I am missing?

Your input is greatly appreciated, because I am (almost) completely clueless when it comes to bringing dead things to life!

Seamus box + McMourning box + extra canine remains + doxies + extra flesh construct.

that should do you for 6 months or so.

Then start adding things like Bette Noire, Hanged, Drowned, Crooked men, Guild autopsies and Rogue necromancy at your own pace.

She's a good choice for a single master in ressers in terms of playstyle and competitive strength. Her mix of mobility & summoning makes her very powerful, and the mere threat of Ikiryo popping out for free really gets into the heads of your opponents and makes them play differently and maybe make mistakes. Also, summoning Hanged on any face card? Yeah, Kirai's got you covered, courtesy of her free Seishin.

However, she's fairly expensive to start budget-wise, because Spirits tend to come in single boxes and you'll need most of the minions for flexibility in summoning. She also wants 'Spirit' Enforcers and Henchman, such as Datsue Ba & Izamu, and usually a summoning platform like a Flesh Contruct or a Night Terror. Some players also swear by including card advantage choices like Phillip & the Nanny and Sebastian + 'Those are not Ours' purely to build your control hand.

So there's a substantial commitment to playing her if you want to have all her options available and bring her full power to bear. If you were aiming for a bear minimum, you'd probably need Kirai + Datsue Ba + Gaki + Hanged + your choice of a minion (Drowned/Terrors/Flesh Construct) to summon off. You probably want to also include Shikome as well as Izamu to the collection asap.

For budget sake, Seamus is probably the better option. Belles are very good and find a place in most Resser crews for a reason, while Sybelle still sees some play with a few other Resser masters as well. Still, if you want to play only a single Resser master at a high level, then Kirai is potentially the best option in the faction. She just happens to cost quite a lot compared to some others.

Or, you know, just play Reva and auto-win until your opponents start refusing to play you. Then go back to Kirai :)

Reva. Box is a fighting crew out of the gate, balanced synergy across the included models. Pretty much just need Seamus Box for belles and Sybelle, a generically good henchmen for Ressers and her specific upgrades that come in the box are pretty decent.

Reva was only available at gencon so far, but if you get Book 4 you can proxy them in the mean time to just get a feel. But, if you don't want to play Seamus, Reva is great since you seem to already have access to his 2nd edition materials. Keeps your expenditures to a minimum. For slightly more, buy the generic faction upgrade cards (Wave 1 & 2 Arsenal decks, generalist decks for Decaying Aura and book 4 upgrades) and you'll have the upgrades to best outfit your crew as able.

Will you be competitive with that? In a local casual tournament, probably average to slightly above average because Reva's box is fairly strong out of it and doesn't require a ton of non-box stuff to reach 50SS or do what it does best: kill stuff aggressively. Assuming 0 out of box stuff, her crew reaches 31SS, so with Sybelle and the belles you can easily make it to 50SS without having to take all the sub-optimal upgrades in Reva's box in exchange for an extra belle.

Expansion is also fairly easy, because you buy enforcers, henchmen, crew boxes, and minions (preferably not the ones that come in crew boxes) as you decide you need to. Reva can do stuff without them at a casual level, and those models, e.g. Carrion Emissary, are there to salt to taste or give you options for higher levels of play. If you own any avatar models, you already have a Carrion Emissary, so you can pick up the stat card online or just get Book 3.

Hope that helps on advice and ultimately your wallet.

Seamus along with dead doxies, flesh construct and the hanged. Seamus can hide behind flesh construct for his back alley action. Like everyone else said... Seamus box has models used in a lot of crews as well

As an added note to what was said above regarding Reva, you can have Reva or friends... you can't have both.

Yeah, this is about right. The common consensus about using Reva seems to be that very few people will want to play more than one game against you.

If you play with the sub-optimal crew above? I think that would mitigate a lot if not all of the concerns in a casual play setting. You could also just not get the generic resser upgrades and Reva is very mediocre. Vincent's specific upgrade is very sub-optimal and Reva's blood mark directly detracts from what everyone sees as too good on her: melee attacking from range.

Vincent is a good shooting model, when he can shoot and not shoot his own team--with the models I recommended, he can only avoid shooting shield bearers once they've died once already. His 0 is great, and has SS synergy with shield bearers, but is a 0 and is set up for Reva essentially, since Sybelle moving in would detract from Vincent's ability to later shoot at the targeted enemy model. Vincent also literally has no melee engagement, so if none of the enemy models are free to be shot without randomization, Vincent can risk shooting his own, run schemes for his 8SS cost, or double focus and SS anyway for his 0.

Shield bearers are resilient and drop corpses for Reva, but they aren't particularly effective fighters, despite the great damage track (for Ressers) and a damage on fail trigger.

Sybelle and belles have been around--I haven't heard many complaints about the former and the latter are generally accepted as great but not game breaking. Sybelle's specific upgrades bring interesting play, but no extraordinary synergy with Reva's box.

Without adding things like the emissary, mlh, decaying aura, etc., Reva's crew is definitely mediocre overall. Reva can hit like a truck, but the rest of her crew less so or yes so but with difficult restrictions.

I've never use the emissary and actually get little use out of MLH and can still cause a ton of mayhem. I've only used Decaying Aura once, but it is likely to be an auto include going forward and is an old upgrade. Never used it before Riva. You should try her, but do be prepared for possible complaints

If you play Reva on a board without Ht3+ blocking terrain, you may as well be playing a shooting crew on a table without any terrain.

And unless everyone has purchased shooting models and have fully committed to "Hire your crews AFTER seeing the table, schemes, deployment options, and your opponent's faction choice", .or people still have limited hiring pools, those limited pools have to be taken into account when setting up the table.

Disclaimer:  I think there are people taking bets on the "line of sight to markers" FAQ entry getting modified.  Since being able to see the markers is an important limitation on her attacks.

I've been playing Reva a fair while. I haven't heard complaints from my local play groups, though I would never say I'm a top tier player.
