Cow Wars III - Sunday 1st May - Milton Keynes

TABLE BOOKED

I've booked for 16 (think it's 15 on my list) for 8PM.

I realise the pack says prizes are at 7:40 but hopefully we can make it in reasonable time, food stops being served at 9 (though they are open longer).

Also that means there is a group of people with no excuse (not that anyone tends to) not to help David get packed up.

Tell me if you're meant to be on there, I'm also sure they won't be upset about squeezing more people in (and selling more food and drink).

Car packed to the roof, so we should have enough boards and terrain with the offers advised. I'll be at the hotel from about 8:30 so any help after that would be welcome.

If anyone has problems on the day text me on 07905 694294 so we can make as early a start as possible (to get an early finish with time for socialising).

Hi David,

great event. Thanks for running it. Had 4 good games with 4 good opponents. Venue was large and spacey and considering there was an Xwing Tourney in the same room, the volume levels weren't silly.

I think water running out was a slight issue for some but apart from that I can't think of anything. Oh, aside from more raffle tickets...8P

Thanks for running and looking forward to your next event.

Class event just like last year.

Fantastic venue, loud at some points but I mean, come on. 38 person Malifaux event and a huge X Wing event, consider that and it was quiet.

Tables were great from what I played on and happy to see the community back up David as he has done so many of us before. Jan and I had two tables in the car but Clousseau was already covered. GO TEAM.

Four fantastic opponents. Really good to catch up so many people I hadn't see in a while.

Going to scrape the barrel for improvements because, honestly, don't care if I sounds like a kiss up, Dave is THE TO in the UK.

  • score sheet was brilliant, but, declare master was a thing that seemed to confuse a few people.
  • speaking of the score sheet, I love the borrowing of Bitefaux's achievements for raffle tickets thing but
    • you needed more tickets :P
    • I personally would've kept it an achievement to get 5 turns in every round. I assume round 4 logic was "well it's less points" but it's only 1ss less than the round before and hey... we might get packed up quicker
  • Overhead projector. Not saying I expect it, but seeing the XWing guys have one I wondered if there was a possibility they could lend you another or that's something you could look at in the future.
    • Not out of your pocket alone, "kickstart" it? I'd donate.
    • Also I was jealous as the XWing guys had a podcast advertisement on there...
  • I had to play Maria round one, I like her, but come on Clousseau, help me out...

Again thanks for what was bloody brilliant event, thanks to my opponents, everyone who chatted to me, wished me happy birthday for Wednesday and everyone who made (or intended to) make the meal afterwards.

I may've not done as well at this event as I'd have liked but I had so much fun I would probably be the first sign up to the next you run there regardless.

Ben

Thanks for the comments, received in the sprit intended. In response;

  • Master should of course have been Faction - carry over error from a previous event, easily fixed
  • totally miscalculated the number of raffle tickets required. Lesson learnt (Bigger cups needed as well)
  • a projector, in my opinion, is a luxury. Money I don't have (or would be better spent on mats/terrain) and an added complication/more stuff to carry. I am encouraging venues to have display screens as I can see the advantage. Hopefully the time call outs were OK.
  • Anyone wanting to advertise , say a podcast, could always bring their own poster/standee!
  • The draw is random. To avoid Maria in round 1 you need to become a Black Joker!

Glad you had a good day, and see you at an event soon.

I can see your point on the fact it's luxury and money is better spent elsewhere. Times were good, especially as you walked about too (don't want to lose your voice).

That's a good point, if only the person running the podcast had the money to do so :(

Finally, if I do join the Black Jokers I now look like a terrible coward, damn you!

Echoing the thanks as above - and an extra thanks for picking one of my tickets out of the raffle!

The only very, very minor comments/suggestions I'd have would be that;

  • the tables I was on were all really, really lovely, but were almost all made up of hard cover and building and so had relatively little (if any) area terrain. Not sure if this was me being unlucky (using 'Mr Unimpeded' Marcus!) with the tables I had, but perhaps a tad more area terrain might be an idea next time?
  • where the tables were set up on 4x3 boards, it might be better to spin them round to give each player 6" of table to set up their cards on their own baseline rather than having the space on the edges (which was often a bit fiddly)?
  • with fairly tight 2 hours games, maybe publishing all of the schemes and strats a day or so beforehand would speed up the list-selection part of the game? I had core 30-odd point lists pre-prepared based on the strats to add to once I knew the schemes, but even so I did feel guilty about faffing around with cards pre-game on occasion.

Thanks for the feedback Tim.

Most of my older terrain is buildings, but more recently I've got more area terrain like the bayou boards.

My concern with rotating the boards is that they are quite thin mdf and I don't want them damaged or flipping up with a 12" overhang. Unfortunately getting wider (doubled) tables would increase costs (already high at £200).

Strats were in the rules pack, and I always keep the schemes for the day. After round 1 you do have time to plan ahead I suppose.
