Starting Up Lynch

Because I have no self control whatsoever I'm looking to dig into a Jakob Lynch crew, mostly going Neverborn route, and I'm wondering what first buys I should be picking up. I've got his own box, a Doppelganger, and Beckoners on the way already- should I look into Mr Graves? Maybe some Tots for scheme running? I'm effectively just starting out but I'd be going into 50 SS games with fairly varied opponent crews, and I'm not 100% on the capabilities of the Lynch crew other than that Graves and the Doppel can give you some fun mobility tricks that work together nicely.

After starting Lynch I went Neverborn first as well. My first buys afterwards were Beckoners, Mr. Graves, Mr. Tannen, Doppelganger and Depleted (almost all thematic). However, I found that I can run Lynch essentially without Tannen or Depleted when starting the crew. If you have previous experience with Malifaux though you might find them more useful than I did at the time. Instead I would suggest buying Terror Tots; Graves can hold the Growth upgrade as he is a Nephilim, so if you find that you are lucky and often Grow your Tots, you might consider the Nephilim box. This is pretty much all you need to be competitive. If you take Ama no Zako as well you could tag team her with Huggy for scheme running and Obey => Paralyze shenanigans (and she is also Ten Thunders, where after time you might find a marvelous abundance of fun stuff to try).

As a bit of advice, if you're planning to grab Terror Tots, just grab the Lilith box.  It'll net you the same three terror tots, as well as Barbaros who is AMAZING with Lynch.  He makes a great bodyguard to keep Lynch safe if you want to get Lynch up a bit closer to the action thanks to his "Challenge" tactical action.  Between that and his automatic pushes on his attacks, he can make sure that if your opponent wants to take down Lynch, they have to beat Barbaros down first.  I've only used Graves once with Lynch so far, but his "Show you the Door" action is really handy for helping to shove Lynch a bit further up the field early on.  In addition, he also makes for a solid beater with some utility (while being very thematic for Lynch).

In case you weren't sure why people keep recommending Terror Tots for Lynch, it's because of his Ace in the Hole ability which lets him pick up any aces that get flipped or cheated on the actions of his own models (aside from himself).  This means that once you get the Ace of Masks, you have permanently sprinting Terror Tots as every time you use sprint, you can cheat in the Ace of Masks to let them sprint, and then pick it right back up to use on the next sprint attempt.  This can also apply to anytime you want to go defensive or use an ability like flurry as well.

Funnily enough, I was strongly thinking of getting Lilith's box anyway, so soon as I get some more spare monies, I think that's exactly what I'll do.

You won't regret it. Lilith is probably the best neverborn master just because of her ability to do well in all of the schemes and strats.

Okay, just to add in something that has been said but is not obvious:

Lynch is fragile as all hell.

Models like Mr Graves (I love his sculpt), Barbaros and Teddy are wonderful because they make your oponent not look at Lynch and it helps keeping him alive, specially because if Lynch dies all the buffs he's giving to Huggy are probably going to go too. I would say picking up the Lynch Box and the Lilith Box are probably the best bang for you buck right off the bat, then you can go Graves and/or Teddy depending on what you like.

Also, Tannen and Graves form a pretty neat combo, since Graves allows Tannen to keep his manipulative status even after he's activated.

I just realized...  I've begun trying to manipulate my opponents hand as a new tactic (mainly for horror duels and Sybelle's With a Flourish), and you just got Lynch!  So you're always gonna have a couple of aces to discard when I make you discard... Curse you, Nemi, and your Terror Tots, too!

Just remember that aces, which are discarded during the opponent's turn, are NOT going back in the hand.

That's a mistake that I used to make ...

I made that error on my very first match. It's something I need to catch myself on because it's really easy to make :/ At least I'm not playing the Vikies, this is easy to keep track of compared to all their buffs
