I'm pretty new to the game, I started out with Jack Daw and I'm looking to move into a new master in Outcasts, and then after that a new master in a different faction. I have Jacks box, the Hanged and some crooked men for Jacks crew, but I also just like painting good-looking models, so I also have Bishop and Sue.

My questions are, what outcast master would make a nice compliment to Jacl, playstyle wise? And, based on that and models I have, which non-outcast masters could I be thinking about to slot in? I thought it would be good to plan ahead since then I can narrow down the pool of random models I'll buy to paint, and actually end up working on models for a future crew. EDIT: I should also say, a) I have a freikorps trapper (came in the Jack box), and b) thanks for any help! I'm looking forward to navigating through different masters an factions, brush in one hand, fate deck in the other, and a bit of direction at the start will be so helpful!

Jack is good at covering a range of play being able to go aggro or area control based however tara is prob the farthest from his playstyle as she's much more control based on model value and condition application for slow and bury

The viks are not only a fun crew to play at times for their glass ninja goodness, but are the only way to get taelor and the student of conflict which are very versatile mercs. I'd compare this box with Von schill and get one of them for the mercs that you'll end up using in a bunch of crews to come

Since you want to move into another faction after the second master, Tara might be a good fit. She's dual faction with Ressers, where your Hanged could come in handy, plus there's additional Tormented models i Ressers which in turn adds to your Jack Daw crew. Tara also likes Death Marshalls, so she could be a way into Guild too.

People with far more experience than me has given good advice on all the Outcast masters here: http://themostexcellentandawesomeforumever-wyrd.com/topic/114590-who-is-a-good-second-master-after-hamelin/?do=findComment&comment=918174

All the above ideas seem good. Tara will have the most use for the models you already have and get you into Resurrectionist crews. But, Von Shill has the Librarian and the Trapper both of which are great models to have. And the Vicks have Taylor and Ronin.

Outcast Masters are possibly the most varied of the factions. I think maybe Von Schill, Viktoria, and Misaki could be said to play "normally" while Leveticus, Jack Daw, Hamelin and Tara (maybe less so than the other three) each have a quite distinct playstyle.

Getting Leveticus gives you Rusty Alyce, and she works well with any Master.

Of course if you buy Leveticus you'll probably want another packet of Abominations and a Desolation Engine. Ashes and Dust is dirty with Leveticus, although he's handy with many Outcast Masters.

Von Schill's box is good, but Lazarus and Hannah are virtual must takes with him, in fact it's not unheard of to buy a second Von Schill to get another Trapper and Librarian.

Viktorias work well from the box, but Vanessa and Malifaux Child give them more options, and if you're taking Vanessa taking Lazarus so she has someone to command doesn't hurt either.

Outcast Misaki can still take four Lost Blossom models, so kind of encourages buying Yamaziko and Oiran.

Jack Daw's Tormented come mainly from Resurrectionists, but Papa Loco is in there too.

Hamelin can take Crooligans, Candy, Iggy and Baby Kade. To make his box work you have to buy the Brotherhood of the Rat as well.

Outcast Tara, if you take summoning Karina, can usually turn a couple of high crows into Resurrectionist Horrors. She benefits from having a Death Marshal or two too.

And Hans, Convict Gunslingers, Bishop, Killjoy, and Ama No Zako, are all good options too.

I'm not even going to mention Pariah of Bone and Iron Leveticus, because you'll end up with a fair chunk of every other faction. Teddy and Stitched Together running alongside Guardians and Howard? It can be done. Leveticus will make your wallet cry, just like he did mine.

Play the Crossroads Seven. That way you can play any faction you like with just seven models.

Thanks, everyone, for all the pointers and advice! Especially Freman for the comprehensive rundown of the faction. The Outcasts are just so varied I wonder if perhaps I won't be branching out into another faction as soon as I thought! The Tara box and the Von Schill boxes are looking pretty appealing as masters to head towards next. Tara is exciting for the possibility of painting Death Marshals, but not playing Guild, and for the "reanimator" style burying hijinks (my favourite deck type in Magic...), and Von Schill just seems like a lot of useful models, and a pretty fun dude to be in control of... Leveticus looks super cool (I love some of the models associated with him), but seems like he plays on such a different axis to other masters I feel like I'll try and get my feel for the game down better before taking on that beast... I'm just coming to realise how many different directions I can take my Jack Daw crew in as well, with handing out tormented to non-tormented models, so that's going to be a lot of fun as well.
