Paradigm
The Obsidian Oni didn't really catch my eye the first couple of times I read through the rules of the new models in Shifting Loyalties, but on closer inspection they actually look really solid. I'm joining a campaign next week, and I'm thinking of getting one of these in my starting crew. Decent survivability, surprisingly good attacks with both Ml 6 and 2/3/4 damage and Ca 6 at range 8 without a projectile tag at 1/3/4 damage, plus a bunch of nice triggers on both attacks. So has anybody gotten around to trying the Obsidian Oni in actual play? What are your impressions?
Gennosuke
I'm find him nice to bring scrap markers for Mei Feng to rail walk to, or for Toshiro to summon Komainu (or even better, for both xD). Also, his (0) is pretty nice, especially with McCabe, but not exclusively. Armor +1, 6Wd, and Ruthless, makes him a pretty solid option in most cases, and combining him with a Dawn Serpent looks great, to give burning with the latter and finish them off with the former. In short, another great minion for 10T, in my opinion
ArcticPangolin
Yeah, the Flames from the Heavens attack on Burning victims is their main draw for me, and the not randomising really helps. It works pretty well if you can get Burning on them, which the Dawn Serpent is pretty good for, but High River Monks will do in a pinch. I look at them from a McCabe viewpoint, but if I were a Mei Feng player... mix with Toshiro for instant goodness.

Or run two Oni and Dawn Serpent with Kamaitachi and Shenlong, being the Oni boss that he is. Now you decently quick crew with solid stats/survivabilty that can blast you apart at medium range. Burn motherlucker, burn!
dgraz
They tag-team well also...first one charges in and does burning....second one finishes off with Flames. I've been using them in my most recent campaign...they're awesome. The Ruthless is extremely handy in smaller point games. I started my campaign with Toshiro leading and yeah, they're great for dropping Scrap. In a campaign their (0) is absolutely amaze-balls........Campaign Skills and Equipment are 'upgrades' so my Obsidians are healing a bunch of models (including my Jorogumo). Duront
The Obsidian Oni is amazing! I am hard pressed to not take him in every list. He can do some much for only 6 stones. Resilience - DF/WP 5 with armor +1 and 6 Wds is pretty good for its cost and the fact you want it to die at a certain point. Offense - His melee attack has a good damage spread with great triggers but the shining attack is the "Flame from the Heavens" its damage spread is great and AMAZING triggers Tactical - All of this awesome offense and marker dropping we have the ability to heal another non-leader model 2 damage for just a card, this is great! Ten T has so many upgrades spread around that many models can take advantage. I have taken him with Shenlong, Brewmaster and McCabe, all times it has totally done work for me. Just be careful with explosive demise, you want to make sure that when the oni gets low, you charge it near as much enemy as possible.
