Seamus, McMourning or Nicodem for starters?

Hey guys,

I am really getting into this whole Malifaux thing :D I got a Ramos crew up and working and now I am looking for something new. So I put an eye on Ressers again :) Took a look at them in the first place but decided to go with Arcanists to get a hang on the rules.

I cant decide between Seamus, Nicodem and McMourning as my first Resser master.  Which one can be played best out of the box? I've read that Nicodem as a summoner needs a lot of other models, so this would be the most expensive one to get, I guess. What about the other two? Which models do I need for all three of them to build a decent 50ss crew with some flexibilities considering model selection during game setup? Which one is easiest to learn and master, which one takes the most practice? Which one excuses the most mistakes in gameplay? And last but not least, which one is most effective against Guild and Outcasts, my main opponents?

Thanks in advance, hope you guys can help me out as good as in my Arcanist thread :)

Kind regards from Germany

Sebastian

Well as far as I can say:

1)Seamus: if played properly he's nearly unkillable, belles are one of the greatest models in the whole faction, sybelle is a solid henchman. Honestly I love how the mad hatter works and what brings on the table; from his box you have all he needs, I'd just add dead doxies, hanged and nurse/flesh construct combo.

2)MCM: I really like this guy: tons of poison conditions+solid melee solutions+nice summoning through upgrades=a lot of fun; out of his box I'd add canine remains, guild autopsy, rogue necromancy and Rafkin (this guy is almost an autoinclude to me with MCM).

3)Nico: prolly my favourite master in the game; He's so flexible that you can play any strategy and being effective through summoning what you need when you need. You don't need to summon in that particular moment? Well he competently become a buffing machine dishing out fast and healing. You don't like buffing? He can debuff your opponents by giving slow and spreading damage with Decay. To work properly he needs a lot of models, maybe the whole faction...there aren't bad choices, I'd buy graveyard spirit, Izamu, mindless zombies, MCM and Seamus' boxes, canine remains and the hanged box to start, adding Molly if you want some great scheme runners(crooligans, really I love 'em).

Seamus. Disclaimer favorite master but still the best purchase for you according to your criteria. Played out of the box the Seamus starter works the best of the three. You will want the option of belles regardless of which master you eventually chose which means you might as well get the starters I begin with.

Also played out of te box he Seamus starter is going I work the best in the majority of circumstances. The belles provide excellent support and with sybelle they can serve as passable scheme runners. With sybelle and the cck and Seamus you also having decent killers.

I would definitely buy McMorning next. Once you have some belle support the McMorning stater works better, and you'll then have nurses which are great additions to the Seamus starter.

Then buy the nice starter. You need more options to play with with nicodem which his starter just doesn't give you if that's your only purchase in resser useable options.

I definitely agree with this. I'm about 6 months into buying ressers. If I could start all over again, first purchase would be Seamus without question. Best out of the box and valuable Belles. Next is McMourning, he's tons of fun and very versatile as well.

At that point get Nico. His punk zombies punch above their weight imo. You'll have a base of summons from Seamus and McMourning.

I made the mistake of getting Nico first, sent some time trying to fill out his models, then got McMourning. Learn from my mistake.

All 3 are great and work together well, but if you just want to purchase one box Seamus. He's also very forgiving for new players. He's punching power is a little weak which Dead Doxies are great for but they are not out yet... :-(

Nicodem is okay out of the box but much stronger if you have a large collection to work from.

The good Doctor is also great.

As a newbie myself, I agree that Seamus is the best starting point for you.

For where to go after Seamus, I found McMourning to have the steepest learning curve of the 3 but his box is going contribute more to growing your Seamus list than Nico's would. Nico isn't as tough to learn but to be at his best you'll need to invest more $$ in models unless you're proxying in friendly games.
