Magic Blast Masters

Hi all,

I started this game by playing Rasputina due to the fact that she plays a very similar playstyle to my Warmahordes faction, Cryx. I have since migrated over to Outcasts, specifically concentrating on Leveticus, Tara and Jack Daw. I am still a relative Noob with Malifaux, playing less than 12 games overall.

There seems to be other magic blast orientated masters in other factions i.e. Sonnia Criid in Guild, and Wong in Gremlins, but is there anything I can implement in Outcasts to replicate the magic blast experience? I had thought about the Freikorps Librarian and Lovelace possibly.

What do you mean by Magical blast?

Does it have to be a cast Action with Blast Damage?

Must it be a ranged attack? (For example Mei Feng, who isn't an outcast, has the scalding blast upgrade attack that is a Ca action that does blasts but has a :meleesymbol).

Could you do area damage in a different way? (ama no zaki can put up an area of hazadous terrain that will damage everything in an area when it activates. It will damage a large area, but slowly over time). All the crossroads 7 have auras that will hurt models near them if they don't meet certain criteria.

Lazarus and the Friekorps specialist both have shooting attacks that do blast damage. Its not a magically cast fireball, but for about 95% of the game it functions the same.

In outcasts Jack and Hamlin have ways of making models do extra actions during their activation, (or copying actions) so if you find a different model that does it, they can make it do it more. But without knowing exactly what you want (and why), its hard to give an exact answer.

You also missed Vanessa as a outcast with magical blasts.

I guess what i am asking is which ranged magic orientated is best? It does need to be ranged and magical (I enjoy the play style and regular opponent often uses the karai spirit horde). I haven't been able to find a lot of information on Wong, but there is plenty of information on Rasputina and Sonnia.

Ultimately I want the basis of the crew to be ranged magic with scheme runners and tanks added to suit the requirements of the strategies and schemes.

I used the Freikorps librarian in a Rasputina list this week, and she performed well, destroying Teddy in one activation.

Ranged Magic Blast can actually be a bad plan if you are facing the Kirai spirit horde. A seishin will stop the blasts very easily. And Ikyru stops ranged attacks very quickly.

I don't see how the playstyle of a magical blaster is different from a flame thrower, but each to their own.

the only Outcast Ca :ranged:blast I could find are Vanessa and the Librarian.

Jack Daw, Hannah, Tara and Hamilin can make the action happen more often.

If the goal is blasts while being a caster Lovelace is not good but if you just want good damage with her go for it. I CAN NOT WAIT FOR HER MODEL!!! Other models to consider with blasts are the Freikorps Specialist, though he is not magic. Other good models in outcast includes Hannah

There are actually a remarkable number of spirits that are not incorporeal. If you want to run a lot of spell casters then the Arcanist are the way to go: Silent Ones and Oxfordian Mages, performers all good magic models that do various things from elemental attacks to illusions. Then they have Cassandra, Snowstorm, and Fire Starter that can work as good henchmen for the theme. As for scheme runners and tanks, well they have those in the form of gamin, golems, and robots as well as Joss. Did I mention Joss, he is just about the most consistent damage dealer in the game as almost nothing modifies his damage down as well as being a tank. Master wise..... Well that is about half the factions if not more. Ironside, Marcus, and Mei are a little weak as range casters go. Collet is more manipulation then damage. Raspy, Ramose and Kaeris are all able to do it well. Ramos is arguably better if you find your shooting into combat a lot and want to get away from how your Cryx play. So if your looking for a faction that supports that style it is the Arcs as others do not have enough general magic shooters to support multiple crew build.

I have actually settled on Arcanists as my faction. I am playing exclusively as Rasputina at present, but I have all the Arcanist box sets except for Kaeris, and a metric of ton of mercs. I do feel I am better suited to Arcanists than Outcasts, and I am pretty satisfied with my choice at present. I am looking forward to trying out the Oxfordian Mages.
