Terrifying (ALL)

So in a tournament last week I was told that the (All) category in Terrifying does not mean that All models have to check, but that All "possible categories" in the Terrifying have to check (Living, Undead, Construct). This would make the diference for those models which are not in any of those 3 categories, like Dreamer or Bad Juju, who are Spirit and Swampfiend only.

I have always played it as affecting ALL models, but it does make kinda sense if it mean ALL categories.

They are absolutely incorrect. Terrifying (All) affects all enemy models, except for those that are immune to Horror Duels.

Text of Terrifying (All) reads: Enemy models must pass a TN X Horror Duel if they end a Walk Action within this model's engagement range or target this model with an Action.

It doesn't specify any particular characteristics or features of the models that have to take the duel besides them being enemies.

contrast with Terrifying (Undead): Enemy Undead models must pass a TN X Horror Duel if they end a Walk Action within this model's engagement range or target this model with an Action.

This now specifies undead models only.

The name of the ability is just a helpful reminder for which models it affects. You have to look to the actual text of the ability to see what it does.

I can only imagine that the person claiming that Terrifying (X) was under some mistaken impression that the rulebook had some official "refactored" version of the ability, instead of the part in parentheses being a convenience to tell the various versions of the rule apart.

The claim gets more bizarre when it's fact checked, though:

• Terrifying # in 1.5 wasn't even factored like that, and only affected living models.
• Station characteristics and hiring characteristics are just as much characteristics as the creature characteristics are.  So Terrifying (ALL) where the model had to have any characteristic is still everyone because all models have station characteristics.
• Terrifying isn't defined in terms of creature characteristics.

You have played it right. As there is no wording about categories "all" must mean all.
