Von Schill box for a new player

Hi guys, I have been collecting some Malifaux miniatures since 2010, but never played the game before. Now I was thinking to give it a shot and I was considering to get the Von Schill box. My question is, is it a good box for a new player to start with? I am not new to tabletop miniatures games and usually I don't like lists/warbands/crews with really straightforward mechanics.

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum.

Von Schill is great master for the beginner as he is absolutely straight forward to run plus with his crew you'll learn how to: kill and be generally pain in the ass (Von Schill), heal (Librarian, Trunk), deploy outside of your deployment zone and how to tackle such situation when opponent has model with this ability (Trapper), run you scheme runners (Freikorpsmen) plus how not to spend 8SS on Specialist (he is pretty good but not with Von Schill to be honest) :)

So now you have a problem whether you want to learn game mechanics with easy master/crew or you prefer something more challenging than this.

Von Schill is a robust master, fairly tough, reasonable damage, not much that could be considered "sneaky". He supports his crew, giving an aura like hard to kill to Freikorps models around him (although it isn't "hard to kill" so it isn't ignored by abilities which ignore hard to kill). However his box provides models that are very good in the context of Outcasts or (as mercenaries) in other factions, especially the librarian and trapper (you might even pick up a second box to get two of each). Von Schill and the Viktorias combine to give a lot more option, but I'd say the first purchases alongside Von Schill would be Hannah and the Strongarm Suit.

In short, yes he is a good box to start with.

Thanks guys for your replies.

So it seems to be simple to run, but has a couple of things to make it a little more complicated, if you want. Am I right?

If I want to get to  just a little bit higher step of complexity, what do you advise as second purchase in addition to Von Schill box?

I'm painting Tara, i will test the crew this week end, seems funny the beastie combo but in that kind of crew you need every turn the right hight cards for your plan, or a least hight cards and burn soulstones for the suits. Instead Von Schill or other crew don't depend so much for your hand.

Is hard advise a master, are all good, depends what do you like, kill everyone? control the map? Or other ?  I could only say that Von is good for start to play because doesn't require a particular good hand and has a ace in the hole for every type of enemy.

Got it. Thanks.

What do you advise for a second master? Even not Outcast.

I would say the Viktorias as their box also adds Taelor and some Ronin to the models you can hire with Von Schill, and Von Schill's models (especially Hannah) can work well with the Viktorias. Tara gives you Outcast models and can also lead you into Resurrectionists if you want to try some of them. Misaki works with 10 Thunders. Jack Daw can make some use of  Hired Gun models, as can Leveticus and (possibly to a lesser extent) Hamelin.

In fact I didn't ask for the good ones or for the best ones :)

I just would like something that doesn't remain flat in term of play style/mechanic. I really would like to try Jack Daw, even if everybody says that it is hard to play.

Von Schill was my first box. He and his crew are really easy to understand, for you and opponent. I sold him because he was too straightforard for me*. It was like shoot, stab, heal, repeat. BUT I won with him matches, so he isn't weak.
If you want to make him tricky, you can add other models for example: Rusty for summoning combos (VS can grant two 0 actions), Hannah with buring, Hans to shoot upgrades.

Second Box: I like Rusty and summoning, so I would buy Leveticus box, but Tara or Viks can grant you more models to use.

* Then I played Neverborn, now i returned to Outcasts with Leveticus so I will buy Mr. Mustache again..... I Should buy Levi / Viks from beginning.

so master that are cool and variable and never straightforward. A master where you'll never have to approach the same situation in the exact same way. Someone who the opponent will never be sure about...

well you hit it on the head. Jack Daw is it. He is a very tricky master who has a huge hiring pool. I love Von Schill but he's the (not easiest) most solid master I've played. He's not flashy but he's great, ESPECIALLY the specialist. His crew are all pretty strong pretty self sufficient people who shine when they're synergizing.

Jack Daw. The enemy will have a hard time pinning you down. Jack is fast and his crew is tricky. With his hiring pool , you'll be buying alot of models but you'll never be lost for options. He's the kind of master that you need to think about your moves turns in advance because the parts in his tormented machine need to run carefully.

oh! Tara. She's a awesomely tricky one. Sooo much extra AP. Activation order is key with her. Lots of hand management with her thematic crew and condition placement.

Hamlin is another good one. Hamelin is a complicated master as well. Very condition based. He has hordes of weak models that you need to turn into efficient death machines. He's just fun...yet he's a negative play environment on a card. It's easy to get annoyed at him.

Thanks. Yeah, I got Von Schill and Jack Daw boxes; just to be sure :)
