A Journey of Many Paths - 2017-05-18: Asami Done!

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I'll be posting WIP and finished crews revolving the Ten Thunders faction, and hopefully get some helpful tips and tricks from the more experienced painters out there.

As an introductory, and something that will be the main focus for a week or two, I'll be posting my progress for Lucas McCabe's crew, the Relic Hunters.

Just primed the whole crew white, and started on the flesh base for them. Almost done Dismounted McCabe, and its mostly just the basing for him. I'm liking painting Heroic scale, much less constrained by the tiny details of 25mils.

(EDIT: Didn't even noticed he had a blotch on his chin. Fixed it!)

Thanks for the positive comments.

I'm liking how the belt turned out as well. The eyes gave me the most grief (I redid it 5 times!). only thing bugging me though was the washes in general made the mini suuuuuuper shiny. Will remedy once I blast it with matte spray.

I did finish Dismounted McCabe last night, but was too sleepy to post :P. Will post it later tonight and the progress that I've done with Sidir. One qualm I have currently with Sidir is how much flat space he has. Could turn the mini boring if I just painted it straight out, so will probably think of an appropriate textile pattern to use on him.

Hello folks, been a while since I posted something. Took me a while to finish up (plus some Dystopian Wars painting backlog I'm clearing...), but here is the finished Relic Hunters Box.

Click on the images for a higher resolution in Flickr. Enjoy!

..Also, as an additional update. Here's is my next Malifaux crew on the table

Doing an exploding ground-earth-bending look for Mei, even added thin brass rods to her hair for the hair pins on her art.

Really like the direction you went with Sidir using blue. Great highlights and blood splatter on all your models.

So boo to the forum rollback losing some of the posts, but it is for a better forum-ing experience for all, so it's well within reason.

Will be posting my progress on Mei Feng's crew to beef up the thread again. Let me know what you guys think!

(As always, click on the image for a larger resolution)

Beefed up Mei's base by adding girders to the gap at the front and the back. Will be painting these as if they were bent through super heating, bright reds, orange whites, on the seared black and rusting/oxidized red of the iron at the end.

I love painting the faces on these Malifaux models, gives me a chance to give them much more life and character. As always, I do the eyes first because they're the bane of my existence. Really love how they ended up, especially the lips.

For the others I've just added miscellaneous accessories to bring more life to their bare cork bases. Wouldn't be a rail crew if I don't show train rails, same size as the girder from Mei's base, but added snapped popsicle sticks to be the sleepers. Highly inaccurate though as the rails typically rest on the sleeper blocks, but I guess this should be the third rail off to the side.....but that would mean electricity....<facepalm>

Kang I added a ton of medium grit basing rocks to act as coal, added some to the shovel as well. Emberling is the same, though I'll paint these while they're stoking, which will be fun to practice OSL on. I added just a bit on the Golem's base, mostly just mildly stoking coal that fell from the behemoth's furnace as it runs to its quarry, or to Mei's side.

Progress is fairly slow, but the effects are worth it it to take my time on. I'm noticeably getting better and faster though, and it's great to see effects of practice bearing fruition.

Boo forum roleback!

Anyway for the Lucas McCabe group I can only offer the same praise as before.

On to Mei Feng!

She seems to have advanced nicely since when I last saw her, the base is definitely looking better and the niggling doubts I had about some of the lumps you had added have now been cured. Really liking the coal with Kang and the Emberling, can't say that I am seeing it as clearly on the Rail Golem at the moment but hopefully it will be nice and obvious when the entire base is no longer white. I can picture what you will be trying to do though (like the giants from DS2 Crown of the Iron King if you have played that game).

Mei Feng herself is currently looking a little bit like an Ancient Egyptian with the make up/black lines but having looked at your earlier models eyes I can see how this is going to end up looking fine when finished.

Look forward to seeing the completed models!

So getting back into Malifaux from my extended hiatus. Painting some models here and there and just getting more models to play with for 10T. Just to get a start on posting more painted models:

Also, having trouble with how I left Misaki's paint scheme. What's a good paint strip for Malifaux models? A bit afraid to use PineSol on it as it might intereact negatively to Wyrd's type of plastic.

Lovely brushwork especially on Asami's kimono ? Look forward to,seeing the rest of the crew

(I've had success stripping a couple of Malifaux figures in neat Dettol...no ill effects just careful with spindly parts as it can slightly soften the plastic where it is thinnest until rinsed under cold water...soak for ten minutes then carefully scrub with soft brush, rinse under cold water then repeat as necessary)

I would try isopropanol. Test it on some spare parts or the mold.
