Who's the toughest model you have assembled ?

Recommended Posts

Izamu as well, I lost majority of the arrow ends, broke his other flag etc.

Really? I really enjoyed building Izamu, he went together like a dream for me. I didn't use any instructions or anything. Just took my time and carefully clipped the banners and arrows off with a bit of sprue still on them. This helps prevent bending or snaps. They once completely removed from the sprue you can clean it up and snip off any excess. I've heard dark things about the Ashigaru and Yan Lo himself though!

I just put together Yan Lo's box last night...

...and I am pleased to report that the Carpet Gods received no sacrifices!

I don't even remember how I did it, but the beard is glued in place, the Ashigaru are all assembled (though why one has nearly twice as many pieces as the other two I'll never know), and Chiaki actually has her damn hair ribbons.  I can't decide if I was lucky, meticulous, or if drinking while building gives me super powers.

My first shot at assembly was the Judge. Then the Death Marshal. Next the Scales of Justice. It was a bit tricky putting on the hands, but nothing a good set of tweezers can't solve.

So I'm starting to put it together and thinking ahead about painting. Do you guys put everything together then paint it or paint somethings separately?  I tend to assemble everything in Warhammer and if I can't reach it, that means you can't see it. But in this game, with all the models being out by themselves (and not hidden in ranks), I'm wondering if I should prepaint some things before assembly?

Thoughts?

I use my best judgement on models in terms of painting.  If I think there's going to be an issue with reaching my brush in to get at some details, I try and leave the pieces separate, then assemble after painting.

My rule is always "build as much as you can" - if you do end up with sub-assemblies, try to remember to leave the connection point un-primed and unpainted in order to help with adhesion during final construction.

I don't think I've come across a Malifaux model I've put into sub-assembly as of yet (other than Mega Marshall and keeping his coffin off for painting, but that doesn't really count), but I can imagine some of the larger models might call it out when I get to them.

I agree. I left the marshall off to paint the coffin separate and that doesn't really count, like you said.  Luckily, I had some leftover sprues from the zombies and found some gravestones and skulls to pile up to go on the base. :D

It would be tricky to keep the connecting points unprimed since they are so small.

 Plastic Zombie Chihuahua leg

40 minutes of prayer to the carpet gods were required.

The Death Marshals i painted in two parts after magnetizing the hand/foot and their respective coffins it made it much easier. (and made them easier to transport too)

I ended up pinning the marshals (if I'd thought of it and had a ready supply of magnets, I'd have done that instead - as a transport option it's ingenius).

I was pretty surprised how easy I found the archers when I started. I'd heard a lot of horror stories, but assembling the head all at once then attaching it to the rest made it pretty straightforward.

I do seem to have developed foresight now, so I leave things in a couple of large parts where it seems useful - Ototo's arms are separate, Lady J's sword blade is, the Lone Marshal is assembled but not attached to his horse (takes a bit of careful work to get him done right, then slide him on and off the horse).

The carpet gods do demand their due from time to time still though...

I had massive issues with the tubes on the Strongarm suit. I've assembled hundred of models without issue but managed to snap every single tube in that kit.

I am tubeman, breaker of tubes

Same here. I managed to cut/break all the tubes.

The head of Burt Jensen was also a bit fiddly.

You could always go back and add some after market items to replace the missing/broken hoses on your Wi-fi Strong Arm suit. Things like Guitar string, braided wire (from Gale Force Nine or the model train store), Braided fishing line or even the innards of "550 cord" work great. You might even be able to find some rubber hose for replacements, I seem to recall that hose like those (similar to the ones supplied with Lazarus) come in some specialist lego sets.
