Yan Lo tactica!

Also shooting a seishin in the face once a turn yields yan lo chi. As it doesn't say anything about it being an enemy. I think datsuba needs a 8 for that, 2 chi a turn can help with getting him full ascension upgrades.

But that requires either Severe damage or death.

I'm trying to figure out why I would ever take izamu in a yanlo crew vs a rogue necro. I have more luck It seems relying on terrifying, impossible to wound, 3 headed, instead of armor 2 which (yanlo can just hand out 2armor for 1 chi a turn) and then reliquary and ruthless are the only upside to take izamu. It seems ressur models compete for the roles yanlo's ancestors already function in? Thoughts on this anyone?

A couple of things to keep in mind with Izamu are Armour stacks, so Yan Lo's Transcendence will give Izamu Armour +4, which is pretty tasty. If he has the Reliquary upgrade you can hurl Izamu into the thick of things not caring if he gets killed because you know he's coming back. The damage he can cause by not caring about staying alive can often tip the balance of the game in your favour. Finally, Izamu's 'A Warrior's Death' means that if you get him into combat and he gets killed not only will get a swing at whoever deals the final blow but he gets scrificed by that ability, not killed by the enemy model. Although highly situational, it can mean the difference between your opponent scoring a VP for Reckoning or not, this can be particularly galling if he/she has invested a lot of resources to killing Izamu.

I'm not saying any of this makes the bug guy any better or more desirable than a Rogue Necromancy, but it should hopefully give you some food for thought. I would personally field Izamu over a RN in a Yan Lo crew because it fits his theme more. Likewise I'd happily include a RN in a McMourning or Molly crew for the same reasons.

However, please feel free to ignore anything I've said as theme is more important to my crew selection than optimal Soulstone cost to in-game use selection. :)

Thanx swig, I appreciate the insight! both have their uses. And izamu's is deeper in a yanlo crew. My only problem with izamu, is his only defensive ability is armor and then his 10 wds. I can't get around how many factions have armor ignoring attacks. Izamu's only defense then becomes his wounds which yanlo can only heal him once a turn or rather resummon heal depending on the situation. Which then he can't give izamu armor because he healed him. I feel like a spare parts yanlo build with Mortimer pooping out limbs 2 times a turn and a RN on turn 2 and 4 with chiaki removing slows. could have a decent amount of fire power and still be a resource we can throw to the wind like izamu. I shall try this out soon!

Plus his free melee AP (don't know if RN has this?).  I always take Izamu with Yan Lo because (1) he is cool, (2) he scares people and can throw them off their game (not always, experienced players will know his weaknesses) and (3) he is a beatstick.  With a 3" range and a 50mm base he can lock down a bit area and with Yan/Chiaki/Soul Porter/Nurse feeding him heals/buffs/condition removal he can be difficult to get rid of.  Having something unbury when he sacrifices then bringing him back also makes people sad!

Sup guys!

There is always one thing that puts me away of starting with Yan Lo, and that is cause I cannot find a Strategy where he could be stronger than Seamus, McM, Molly, Nico...

When should he be a stronger choice over the rest of the Resser Crews?

Maybe... Turf War, anyone? (although I rate McM, Nico and Molly pretty high there, btw!)

Running in theme, he's great for reckoning since he heals and supports a small number of elite dudes very well.

Running out of theme, I really like him in any scheme/strategy pool that tends to be hordey (reconnoiter, turf war, etc.) but might not have a lot of living models for me to Nico with. Really construct heavy crews for example.

With 7 Masters per Faction and only 5 Strategies, every Master can't be "the best" at something... and in this edition, flexible generalists are much better than specialists (IMO). Build an appropriate crew, and any Master can take on any objectives and win - the question becomes "Whose playstyle am I most comfortable with in this situation?" rather than "Which Master is the best?"

As a total noob I have a question: Is Yan Lo able to summon anything? Like Ashigaru or something?

The only things that Yan Lo can summon are Ancestors, which were already in your force, and that have died over the course of the game. Even then he can only summon each ancestor once and only if he has taken a specific upgrade.

Yan Lo is all about taking the essence of those who die around him, and rather than convert that essence into summoned dead like other ressers, he draws it into himself to become more powerful personally.

Toshiro can summon Ashigaru and another unreleased minion that is a construct.

If you take the Reliquary Upgrade, it allows Yan Lo to summon any Ancestor models that you hired and then died during the Encounter, but just once each.

That might not look like much, but then remember it allows him to summon One Henchman (Toshiro), and 3 different Enforcer models (Yin, Chiaki and... Izamu!). Although it is situational, it can be arguably better than Seamus' and McM's summoning, if you ask me.

Ohh, and if you want more summoning power, you can always take the Spare Parts Upgrade looking for Guild Autopsies and occasionally a Rogué Necromancy!

Having to killed both Izamu and Yin TWICE each in a game sounds a lot easier then it is.  especially when they are first used as guided missiles towards the big mean things that can kill them easily, like Kang.  I am not to sure on Chiaki, I would look at other support elements instead like a bell, Rafkin, or Carrion Effigy.

Here are a couple questions:

I've always been too scared to take Datse Ba because his extremely small pool of 6 wounds gets me worried he will just be picked off by a stray shot or two. Even wit Incorporeal, and Terror, isn't he still a bit squishy?

What does Datse Ba do during the game other than summon a peon or two?

Also how much Chi can you really expect to be floating around by midgame? Even between YanLo and the Soul porter it seems to me like Yan will have a really tough time getting any more than 6 by the end of turn 3, not to mention 3 by the end of turn 2 to keep a flow of ascendancy upgrades coming in (since he can only equip one per turn) All the while trying to keep some extra to buff things with +2 armor.

Can he use the spirit+2 armor buff on himself? I'm pretty sure he can, I'm just checking.

Cannot answer much about Datse Ba save that with her 6wds I would be willing to drop a SS or two in her defense.  Incorporeal and SS prevention are pretty strong together as long as the attack was not a Cast action or indirect damage.  If you have healing in the list it also helps as always.

No he cannot use the Spirit and +2 armor buff on himself.  The icon in the action is a Pulse icon which does not include the user unless the action states so.  So Yan Lo cannot give himself the boost.  As for the Chi, I think the biggest mistake someone can make is trying to do to much with your chi at once.  If you are using the ability to give out the Armor +2 then I don't think you will be getting a Ascendancy upgrade every turn *and it might even be a good idea not to*.  To me Yan Lo seems flexible there, you can use your Chi for 3 different things depending on what the flow of the game demands.  The first is just a bonus to your Cast, something I am a fan of as it makes all his spells easier to cast.  The second is to buff your troops, giving the Armor +2 at a key moment.  And finally there is going down the Ascendancy route to buff Yan Lo up himself.  You will rarely get to do all three at once but you generally can do one and might be able to do two once in a while effectively.

Datsue Ba is a woman. What she does is ignore armour and make Izamu walk faster. The peon summoning upgrade is mostly for a Kirai led crew.
