Objective Runners

My favorite Outcast objective runner: The Crooligan. You know, for Hamelin and Leveticus. :)

Void Wretches, The Guilty, and Ronin are also quite good.

Ashes and Dust makes a great objective runner - it moves quickly, eats opponent objective-runners, and has some incredible movement tricks, especially for Outflank. Expensive, but you never have to worry about the objective-runner situation along your flanks.

Don't overlook Desperate Mercenaries.

They are Cheap at 4ss and have Wk 5/Def 5, which is not altogether bad for Objective Running.  When they contact the enemy spend your AP on Defensive Stance instead of wasting attacks and they can hold up longer than one would think, or atleast drain the opponent's resources.  Their other skills are extremely situational but in the end I often consider them when I have that strange value of 4ss remaining.

Friekorpsman, outside of a Von Schill crew, can be a half decent choice as well if the board has lots of Severe terrain in play.  WIthin a VS Crew they are very solid.

And don't forget the Hodgepodge, especially with Levi, Viks, VS or Misaki.  Surprising durable it's are a nice fit.

I have to agree with the guys above. Void Wretches seem to be one of the best at running our schemes. They are fast, fairly resilient and incorporeal gives them freedom of movement. Others I've used are Bishop, Ronin and Torakage if playing Misaki. I've not yet found a place for Desperate Mercs in my crews but they seem like a good candidate.

The other advantage to void wretches is they are pretty good at removing enemy objective runners as well. All they need is to bury them with their attack rather than kill them off.

Very useful against Ramos spiders in a squatters rights game I had this week. Let me switch the marker from him to me, and cost him 2 VPs over all.

Even though you need to pay the 1-SS surcharge to hire them, remember that mercenary models from other factions play well with Outcast upgrades. Torakage, in particular, appreciate getting to rapid fire without discarding a card from the Sister's Howling Wolf Tattoo, and they will also count for I Pay Better, assuming the wording doesn't get changed before it goes to print.

I'd never really considered using Out-Faction Mercs with Outcasts, we tend to get better choices. If you want a rapid firing shooter the Convict Gunslinger is almost always better and costs pretty much the same. The only exception to this really is Performers/Oiran with aTara (provided she sticks with the condition based bonuses). Having some form of Lure and Poison could be beneficial there.

As solo objective runners, the Torakage have better defenses than the Gunslinger, better movement, and immunity to disengaging strikes. The ability to triple Leaf Step without tossing a card is just a cherry on top of a really solid sundae.

Torakage are pretty solid in my experience, but I understand they seem to be a "love them or hate them" sort of unit.

I like objective runners who do *something* to impact the encounter beyond just running and scheming.  Ashes and Dust qualifies, as does Bishop, just by virtue of having so many AP.

Other candidates include Oiran, which can pull things out of position, Ronin, who can beat up other objective runners and/or provide extra stones, or Trappers, who can move up flanks while shooting.

2 options in my books:

1. cheap, fast, Ht1. Void wretches are my go to. Crooligans when you can get em, Desperate mercs.

2. The tank. Biggest nastiest thing in your crew. Hard to deal with.. Ashes and dust, Bishop etc.

That's for dedicated scheme runners. I tend to use those mid priced models (Ronin / Freikorpsmen etc) as a jack of all trades. So I do use em for schemes.. but don't necessarily dedicate their role to capping schemes at the start of the game.
