  3. Hi Everyone - I'm new to the forums (and to Malifaux) and I had a really basic painting question. What kind of paints would you recommend a beginner picking up? Sort of as a starter set. Both in brand and colors. To give some background - I used to play WH/40K and loved the painting aspect, probably a bit more than even the gaming aspect. Yeeeaaarrs later I wanted to get back into painting - but not at the cost or unit limitations of warhammer (I didn't want to paint 30 of the same guy). A friend suggested I check out Malifaux both for the incredible minis and the much more dynamic game play and I'm very very excited by what I've seen. I'm especially intrigued by Pandora and her crew. I have a few random fantasy minis I'd like to tackle just to get back into the groove of painting, before diving into characters I'd like to game with on a regular basis. So I guess I'm looking for a kind fundamental starter palette of colors... and ideally nothing that's going to break the bank. There seems to be some back and forth across other forums about craft store brands (i.e. Apple barrow) vs. the mini-specific paints (i.e. Vallejo or Citadel). I was wondering what the general consensus was among Malifaux painters since that's what I'm ultimately aspiring too. Thanks!
  4. Another hobby afternoon at the The Sage's Shoppe in West Lafayette, IN, USA Bring your mini's or terrain, or just show up to join in or discuss the game. Want a demo? --- just ask! Sunday, Feb. 9, 2015, noon -- 3:00 PM EST
  5. Howdy folks, In an effort to stay motivated and play it painted in 2015 I am am embarking on my first painting thread. I am in no way an amazing painter but I hope that if I can keep moving I can at least improve as I Forest Gump around with my Neverborn. As an aside I am very new to Malifaux but a long time gamer and table top war gamer and I am very excited to have found myself playing this very wyrd game. Here is my progress thus far with Pandora's crew box and an old Insidious Madness that someone gave to me last week. http://themostexcellentandawesomeforumever-wyrd.com/community/gallery/image/3592-insidious-madness-1/ http://themostexcellentandawesomeforumever-wyrd.com/community/gallery/image/3593-candy/ I am always up for any thoughts, advice, mountains of praise, and the like! 6. Dear fellow brush wizards For the mini I'm currently working on I plan to have a mirror on the base. However, I have not painted a mirror before and would like to draw from your expertise. I currently see 2-3 options: 1) darker grey (or color of choice) on one side and lighter on the other like when painting an orb but then instead of the highlight dots a whiteish light streak across the surface. 2) Sky-earth non metallic metal (would have to do some testing first, don't have experience with that) 3) cutting the internal of the mirror from a CD or so and actually have a mirroring surface (guess that will look weird in the context of the mini, so I'd rather not do that) Does anyone have tips, things to consider? If you have a great tutorial or reference work I'm very interested, too. Thanks!
  7. Hi all, I recently acquired the translucent Kirai crew from Black Friday, and while I'm not painting it immediately (got a few things ahead of it in my queue), I'd like to start collecting tips about painting translucents. Right now I'm thinking about painting the majority of Kirai, but leaving part of her non-weapon holding arm, one of her legs, and the end of her hair translucent, sort of representing her being intermediate between the spirit world and the physical, which I think will be especially thematic once her 2e avatar becomes an option. For the spirits, I'm thinking about painting their clothing items, accessories (fan on Onryo), maybe the heart and guts on Lost Love. Otherwise, the spirits' "flesh" and hair will be left translucent. I think brush-on primer will probably be better than trying to mask off parts, and I'm probably going to be really careful about handling the parts to be left translucent prior to sealing, to avoid getting body detritus on them, but if anyone has any other tips or suggestions about how to paint translucent crews and really retain the effect all the way to the sealant phase and beyond, it'd be greatly appreciated. (Also I'm still at a loss as to whether to paint the Seishin or not, so if anyone has any suggestions on that, fire away). Also feel free to discuss other translucent crews/models in here, such as Nightmare Tara, Dreamer, Whiskey Golem, Bete Noire, or any others I might be forgetting. Tips on how to retain the effects, suggestions on what parts to paint or what to leave unpainted, all is welcome.
  8. Just started painting up the models from the new plastic Lucius box. Thought I'd start a little mini-blog of my progress and hopefully get plenty of critique from all the great painters on here! Please be as harsh as you like because I really do want to keep improving. First up is Lucius, although he's not looking very impressive at the minute . I've put down the base colours to make sure I'm happy with them, started a little shading on the cloak and have done some vague blending on his mask. Photos: This is only my second attempt at nmm so any opinions about the light placement on the mask would be really helpful! I plan on taking the highlights a lot further but want to make sure they're in the right place first. I'm also unsure about the colour of his cane - I was thinking of trying to make it look silver but I'm not sure if I have the skills to pull that off so any other suggestions would be great. Thanks for looking!
  9. Hey everybody! My name is NPC Chris and I am from Sunny Seattle, WA. This is where I'll be posting pics of stuff I am working on, bolstered by some occasional thoughts. I initially started another thread here where I began detailing my first crew. I am completely hooked on Malifaux though, and wanted a thread that could be a bit more broad, partially in order to motivate myself to keep working on things! Here is a picture I took of my first complete Malifaux crew, The Torch and the Blade: I LOVED painting these minis. I couldn't get enough! In my opinion, Malifaux has the coolest sculpts around and I they inspire me to really try and push myself in order to do them justice. If you are a fan of seeing people's progress as they try to improve their hobby skills, then this may be the thread for you! Here is the up-to-date list of what is in my hobby queue: Lady Justice crew box - Assembled Perdita Ortega crew box - Assembled Lucas McCabe crew box - Assembled Lucius crew box - Assembled The Dreamer crew box - Assembled Guild Riflemen - Unassembled McMourning crew box - Unassembled Witchling Stalkers - Assembled Guild Executioners - Unassembled Lilith crew box - Assembled Seamus crew box - Unassembled Rasputina cre box - Unassembled As you can see, I got a lot more to get through! (Working at an FLGS helps) Let's do this!

  15. So we are off to a good start with establishing a new play group at The Only Game in Town in Somerville, NJ. We still have a lot of terrain wit only a primer coat on it, and we are looking to rectify that! We will be having a hobby day on Friday June 27th from about 3pm-7pm to get it all painted up. Terrain and terrain materials will be provided, feel free to bring some brushes, paint, and plastic safe primer would definitely be appreciated! The location is: The Only Game in Town 211 W Main St, Somerville, NJ 08876 Hope to see you guys and gals there! Chris W.
  16. I enjoy helping others learn new tricks when painting, and love learning new tricks from others. Often, on a forum, you'll see fantastic painting blogs, where the artists will happily answer questions about their work, or threads where people ask how to do certain things; how do I make a balanced model, how do I paint/highlight green... how do I scratch-build an entire character! I figured it could be helpful to have a single thread meant as an ask/advise thread. Feel free to ask questions of veteran painters here, and hopefully enough veteran painters will peek in every now and again that we can help others either ourselves, or direct others to various tutorials we've found helpful in the past. And of course, no condescension: Any question, no matter how straightforward it may seem, is worth the asking!
  17. I have just started getting into learning Color Theory and how it applies to painting Miniatures. During my research, I have stumbled across some great tools for picking your colors. Colorcombos.com https://kuler.adobe.com/create/color-wheel/ I especially like the colorcombos.com site. Pick a color and it will give you a wide variety of pre-selected schemes.

Terrain and terrain materials will be provided, feel free to bring some brushes, paint, and plastic safe primer would definitely be appreciated! 20. This is my second Malifaux Crew (the first was the Relic Hunters). There are finally a few people in my local meta getting into the game so I decided to try out some of the new models. Hope you enjoy and let me know what you think! (All these models were assembled, painted, based, including cemetery terrain.... in 24 hours o.O)
  21. So, I finally took the plunge and bought an Airbrush/compressor a bit ago. I've wanted one for the ability to do better transistions, and the espoused greater ease of transparency control for a while, and I hope to be able to gain finer control over it than with a paintbrush. (I also plan to use it for larger scale painting, but that is probably a bit later in the game.) I got this model: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006FQCBZK/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 because it was cheap and seemed like it would be a decent one to learn with. However, the documentation it came with left a bit to be desired in regard to several aspects, and I am at a loss as to how to proceed. I know I need The following: Some sort of cleaner/cleaning kit New Paints and/or thinner Ventilation a mask The problem is that I don't necessarily know which is the best value for my money with each of these. Keeping in mind that money is an object, and probably the most important one, I could use some advice on which to get/make, and how to do it. Paint: I would like something that will work well with waterbased paints, as I mostly have reaper/citadel paints, and would like to be able to mix hand and air painting. At minimum, I need a relatively cheap basic set:Red, Green, Black, Blue, Yellow WHite, purple, orange, and prime. WHat is going to give me the best value for my money? Also, can I use a thinner with the water-based paints I have, or should I keep them away from the airbrush? I know that water is the enemy.... With the previous in mind, what type of cleaner should I get? The set I got recommended putting cleaner through before I did anything else to remove any loose manufacturing bits, and to practice control. But without knowing what type of paint, I'm not sure what type of cleaner I should get. or will general airbrush cleaner work for everything? I generally work in an area with fairly poor venitllation. I have heard of cheap to build/procure vent boxes that would work, but I'm not sure where to find them... and as for a mask, Will the cheap masks like this work, or do I need something a bit more heavy duty? Also, I wear glasses. Should I get some sort of safety goggles? Am I missing anything else I should have? Also, can you point me towards any good tutorials/books? I know there was thread with a bunch of these, but I can't seem to find it... Thanks!

  23. I love painting, especially these new Malifaux plastics, the sculpts and quality are insane. I wanted to start sharing them here with you and get your feed back and ideas on how i could improve. So for the month of January i started my first Malifaux crew. I love the new look of their plastic models and really enjoy painting individual models over churning out multiples of the same thing(I also play warhammer and the model count is killing me). I took a month and did the masters of the Path crew (YAN LO) I had so much fun painting and basing these. I used secret weapon blasted wetlands bases, with realistic water, tall grass, moss and leaves. They look better in person. Let me know if you have any question on what paints i used (almost all GW) i also used a paint on matte varnish dulcote. Sorry the pics aren't the best, still working on a set up to shoot pix of my models. I have two more models to paint to go along with this crew, maybe three. I'll post em as i get them done. Let me know what you guys think! bottom picture was an attempt to better see the water effects. Click pix for larger images.
