  1. I'm brand new to Malifaux and Vassal, so perhaps this is a silly question, but I notice that the terrain conditions seem to be leftovers from an older ruleset- "soft cover", "hard cover", and "obscuring" are not part of 3E. I'm assuming that these were left in place so maps made for 2E don't go kablooey with the new module, but is there any established convention for how to read these conditions within 3E (hard cover = blocking, soft cover = concealing, obscuring = dense?) And is there any way to mark terrain as severe, or plans to do so? (I understand that defining terrain is something players do at the start of the game and that it's not inherently baked in, but it'd be nice if it could be less ambiguous to ease play between strangers and minimize confusion).
  2. Hi guys. I'm brand new to Malifaux and very new to skirmish games. I've gone over the rules, the faq, and anything I could find from this forum and am still struggling with certain aspects of how line of sight, cover, shadows, and different heights work. I'm sure this has been explained many times here by now, but I haven't found any one thread that puts it all together for me. Hoping someone can point me to the right place. First, I believe I understand but would like to confirm, that line of sight is always a two-way street; there's no such thing as one model having los to another without the reverse being true as well. Secondly, are terrain modifiers like Concealment or Dense compatible with a Height trait? None of the example terrain types in the rules mixes Height with those conditions, but nothing explicitly forbids it. It's unclear to me for this reason what the intent of the designers was for how these conditions interact. If it is possible to have Height on such a terrain piece, then does that mean that models that are higher up than the height of the terrain piece ignore those traits? For example, imagine a clump of thick tall grass, which is a Ht 2, Concealing, Dense piece of terrain. A Sz 2 unit is standing on one side, while a Sz 3 unit is on the other. Does the Sz 3 unit "see over" the grass and ignore Dense and/or Concealing? Finally, if I've understood the rules for cover and line of sight correctly, it seems like no matter the size of the models relative to the size of the blocking terrain or the height either of them is at, any time some portion of the target has a sight line blocked by the terrain casting the shadow, they get cover. In other words, if Godzilla is coming down 5th Avenue but the tip of his tail is around the corner, in Malifaux terms he has cover. Is that right? Another example scenario that will help illustrate some of the things I'm having a hard time with. For example, what kind of tactical position does a "rooftop sniper" represent in Malifeaux? From what I can tell, he's going to be exposed to fire from all enemy models that aren't in the shadow of whatever he's on. With respect to models in the shadow, he can take potshots with impunity if he has the moves to do so, by going from > 1 " from the edge to < 1", firing, and then retreating again. If they don't retreat, they'll be exposed to fire from the ones in the shadow as well. Does this sound right? Thanks for any resources you can direct me to, I'm looking forward to my first game of Malifaux soon.
