  3. After a long year of grinding in out in the Malifaux World Series, 16 players have risen to the challenge of competing in the MWS Championship! These competitors have shown skill, determination, and a shocking ability to avoid tilting when that black joker flips their way. The first round begins this week.

The championship will run for 6 weeks, with three rounds of round-robin in the group stage, followed by a top 8 cut that moves to single elimination format. The rounds are GG3, singles. Because of the unknown release timing for Madness of Malifaux, the competitors were polled how they preferred to handle new content and it was decided that no Madness content would not be allowed in the event.

We will be trying to record and share as many of these games as possible. Follow along on the MWS YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/MalifauxWorldSeries/

  4. What crew is your opponent playing?

Terrifying is extremely good... right up until it isn't. It's either the most busted defensive tech in the game, or it does literally nothing for you.

As someone who plays several crews that rely on it (Nightmare, Woe), if I rely on Terrifying to keep my models alive then I'm gonna have a rough time if my opponent has some variance swing their way or if they manage their cards well. What I'm usually looking at is how many good cards they flip on their terrifying duels and how many cards they cheat to pass terrifying. If they cheat to pass terrifying, I'm going to do everything in my power to make them miss or cheat to hit.

It may be helpful to think about it as resource drain, and only spend actions into Terrifying if you know you can afford to cheat enough times to guarantee hits and kills. Sometimes the right play is just to YOLO some swings and hope for the best (never into Nightmare FWIW). Terrifying puts a lot of resource pressure on the opponent, but it's definitely not a silver bullet defense.

Some rules of thumb for playing into terrifying:

    • Don't cheat the terrifying duel if you can't cheat the attack flip too
    • It's OK to throw actions at terrifying without cheating, but don't make a plan around your attack succeeding
      • UNLESS, failing the terrifying duel puts you in a worse position (looking at you Dreamer)
    • If you know its coming, a single ruthless model goes a long way
      • Woe, Nightmare, Tormented, Honeypot, are places you know for sure you'll see some terrifying.

Beware that, if this format becomes the "new way", we may stop seeing the new releases on the table, making quite difficult to spot what needs an errata from the new models.

That's fair; but if this format becomes so popular that it's supplanting standard play. I think that would be a strong message for Wyrd to rethink their release/errata cycle, and I'm certain they'd listen--at which point there might be a lesser need for it the format and it would probably die off.

Implicit in the BalanceFaux idea is a belief that the best state of the game is after Wyrd has had a chance to tune their creations. It's just carving out a space for the polished game to sit on a pedestal.

At the same time removal of the one model shouldn't keep that same keyword from being able to make an effective but not overpowered crew.

There are quite a few crews that have 1 or 2 lynchpin models that would be rendered effectively unplayable without them. I don't think this creates a more diverse meta, and has as much or more collateral damage as a blanket ban does.

    Ban DMH

    Ban multi-master

    Ban titles

    ---you are here---

    Ban all new releases

    Quit m3e

    Fixed this for you.

You're using this to try to make a point about abusing power or something, but you're missing the point that people are already at the point where they're not enjoying the game and/or looking for alternatives. The errata cycle is long. Playing competitively can be extremely frustrating when there are a couple broken things. If there's a solution that keeps people who aren't having fun because of have balance involved in the m3e, that's better than losing them to another game, no?

  8. Aegis Games in Bellingham, WA will be running a 5-round tournament on Nov 12-13! https://www.bestcoastpairings.com/event/414k80w8

We have a fairly active meta with weekly games happening at the store, and the space is GREAT for events. We'd love to have some travelers come visit to play Malifaux in style!

Madness of Malifaux will be allowed if they have been in the app sinceOctober 22nd (3 weeks prior to event date). Pools are subject to minor changes up until October 22nd.

    Awards: 3:45 - 4:15pm

    ***Who is Welcome?***
This event will require both good familiarity with the core rules of Malifaux, and a fair amount of stamina. Two days of games isn’t something we recommend just jumping in on without a number of practice games.

    ***Why Proxies***
As with Malifaux Burns, Madness of Malifaux is introducing new models, new masters, and titles for them. In order to follow suit with prior events run at the store, and to provide a hope of balance against Damien (we see you) the new masters and their titles will be allowed as long as they have been available for at least 3 weeks.

    ***Clocks***
Aegis Games will provide a clock for any table that wishes to use one. We understand that this is still a new development in Malifaux, but we believe that using a clock is the fairest way to adjudicate a timed match. We encourage players to use them at this event! Players who go 2-1 or better on Day 1 will be required to play clocked games on Day 2.

    Our Clock System:

    • Encourages Timely play and sees more games reach Turn 5
    • Does not prevent the clocked player from winning the game
    • Has minimal to no impact on the outcome when both players are playing at a similar pace.
    • Same fundamental system used on Vassal for the MWS

    ***Pools***

I think all high level tournament should use a chess clock. But, in my meta, we have a lot of new(ish) players and most of them have a hard time finishing a game in 2h30... The clock would be a huge burden for them.

In my local meta, my newer players really appreciated the addition of clocks to our practice games. It actually turned into a huge level-up moment for them, and for two of them in particular they went from games ending T2-3 to games ending T4-5 after only a handful of clocked games. I think that will vary great from person to person, however. And I'd never drop a clock on anyone brand new, of course.

  10. The MWS qualifier in July, Trials of Time, used chess-style clocks instead of traditional round timers. Clocks have been "opt-in" for the series since the functionality was added to Vassal, but this was the first event where clock use was a requirement.

To gauge the experiment, we did a survey of MWS participants afterwards. Overall we felt like we got a positive response. We'll be using this data, and the conversation it inspires, to inform our events in the future. We'd love to hear thoughts and feedback from the wider community as well!

Attached is a copy of the clocks system used during Trials of Time for reference.

  11. Hello all! The World Series Committee (WSC) is looking for folks from the community interested in running online tournaments to contribute to our 2022 rankings and World Championship qualification.

The WSC is focusing its energy on our "Big Three," which will be 6-round events, scheduled for January (currently in progress), May, and September. But we would like to see smaller events with interesting formats happen throughout the year and we would like the community to have some say in what some of those events are.

If you are interested in running an online event as part of the MWS, review our Qualifier Requirements (attached) and fill our this form.

For those who want a tl;dr of our requirements:

    • WSC must approve your event and schedule
    • The event must be competitive focused and the format must be balanced
    • You must use the MWS FAQ and MWS Code of Conduct
    • Otherwise, you have control over the format, pools, and maps
    • You will be responsible for organizing your event (reg, pairings, etc), but the WSC can help with rulings and CoC enforcement as needed

The WSC will be reviewing submissions on February 21st and contacting TOs to finalize details on February 28th. We will open a second submission period in May.

We have added a code of conduct for the series this year. With the participation we received last year, we wanted to make sure we are being as transparent as possible about what our sportsmanship expectations are and how be intend to enforce any breaches in conduct. As usual, we have tried to keep an up-to-date FAQ so players can resolve as many rules disputes as possible at the table. Our Rulings and FAQ has been updated with most outstanding Malifaux Burns questions. As always, anything we feel is clearly supported by the core rules or Wyrd's official FAQ isn't included in our document.
