  1. There's definitely already a lot to learn with Malifaux, so it could become a blocker for casual/new players: BUT, when playing at a local gaming club, there will likely be a limited number of master's you'll see, so until you go to tournaments you won't have to learn every master to be competitive.

But, tournament organiser could make you pick masters for each round up front and then a week before the event let you know what the ladder looks like. It would stop counter picking, but would be beginner friendly. Not really sure if that's a solution or another problem...

Make sure to note yans reliquary has to go on a retainer minion specifically.

The way I read it, it has to start on a retainer, but can be moved to any friendly model...

So, you could put it on an OOK model, but when that model dies it would go back to the closest retainer model, which could then shift it to another OOK model if you like.

  3. Below worked for me a while back when I had the same issue:

Turn off WiFi and data, then clear cache, then force stop, then open the app.

Once the app is open and past the splash screen you can turn WiFi and/or data back on.

You don't always need to clear cache and force stop. (I had the app stall on the splash screen loads on my old phone, with the above fixing it).

  4. It would probably be easier to just have an ability that hands them out during deployment:

Wild experiments: during deployment distribute 4 mutation upgrades to beast models in your crew. If Marcus is the leader, distribute 8 instead.

If Marcus becomes a summoner, then he could attach one when summoning. A trigger could allow a second to be attached.

But I don't really know what I want to see from the new title. I guess a summoner is the most likely? But Marcus could become a beater?

  5. I've just done a scoot around my normal online gaming shops in the UK, and then around my extended list of shops, and while some have something in stock, it's clearly just the dregs of a forgotten range. Wyrd will need to do a big push with the starter set to give confidence to stores to stock the range again (shouldn't be that tough for stores already stocking Malifaux).

If wyrd have improved the plastic used for existing models, then I would definitely lead with that. If they haven't I would probably drastically drop the retail price... Even if it's just a temporary offer...

I'd also (as discussed above?) considering going for "low part count" instead of pre- assembled. Nothing designed to be painted should be pre-assembled - the risk on a production line of bad joins or excessive glue is just too high. It should also bring the cost down.

The app does look pretty great. That will do wonders for getting players interested!

  6. As far as hex bases go, to deal with the 30/40/50mm base split you would probably need hex's smaller than a 30mm base, which might then put them at a size where you want widgets to measure them quickly rather than counting them.

But you don't have too - you can have 50 mm bases take up 7 hex's and 40mm bases take up three, and 30mm take one. You might need to add a few rules to deal with those three hex bases interacting and moving. It would adjust the balance a little between base sizes, so would need several other tweaks if you wanted anything competitive.

So, again, it probably only really works if designing a ruleset from the ground up with it.

  7. Having 'tiles' instead of free measuring makes a game sooooo much faster to play. And a game like Malifaux where movement means a lot, it could half the game time which would be awesome.

However, you really need to design a game from the ground up with either in mind. Hexes are leagues better than squares, but then leads to terrain issues, so you have to keep that in mind when buying/selling/building terrain. Circular bases aren't an issue to my mind.

There was a thread a year or two ago about a beginner friendly alternative ruleset for Malifaux which discussed using tiles instead of free measuring.

I used to be very against the idea, but after playing Mantic's Deadzone and Dreadball, I'm very for it. Its not for all games though. And of course we can't talk about wargames + hex's without mentioning battletech. Possibly the longest running wargame, successfully using hex's for 30+ years with only minor rule changes.

I don't understand the comments about tiles being clunky - they are the exact opposite. Free measuring is clunky because humans can move things precisely, and the table surface isn't necessarily flat, so models can't always be placed where you want. If you have hex's and a board designed for them, you always know exactly where a model is, exactly how far away it is, and there are no discussions about whether it can or cannot do something.

I think wyrd changing Malifaux to hex's would be catastrophic for sales of the game because of how established it is, but releasing a simplified version, in addition, targeted at beginners (or casual players) with a hex grid could be great. They could probably just do a fairly complex find and replace on the cards to convert without much development time.

Why does it have to come through the app?

If you wanted black and white copies of the cards... why not just go to the drop box, download the entire errata card list + combine them in adobe + print them 3 cards (3 fronts 3 backs) to a page (the perfect size for the card sleeves)?

I've done this with the entire explorers faction cards and it works really well (I actually sent it to staples and had them use their nice color printer so I real nice explorer card proxies).

If you try and print those full colour cards in black and white you'll likely end up with some ok cards and many unusable ones, but you'll definitely end up with lots of wasted ink. Given the cost of colour ink cartridges these days, it's probably a similar price to get much better copies printed for you rather than use your own inkjet.

Both of the unofficial beta apps had great printing options. It was a real shame support was stopped for them - they had a massive part to play in me starting Malifaux. Overall the official app is better, but it was really nice to be able to print cards for all the models you owned really easily.

  9. I can still see crews made with DMH characters, but can't create new ones or search for the cards.

It would be really sad to see them go - there's no errata for them, so it costs nothing to keep them in the app. Let's just hope it's a bug and soon to be fixed!

  10. Would you not consider a slate ridge for the same role? It's got two ways of healing, can remove mutation upgrades if needed, and can make the use of the minion part of inhuman reflexes.

I generally don't see much love for them, and haven't tried them myself, but I don't have grootslang and do have two maulers!

Grootslang seems to have more utility too me, but is more squishy if not careful (although all is relative, since 10 hp for 8 stones is pretty good!)

Would you say that Marcus has got a lot better with GG2? Prior to this thread, most of what I've read on this forum has been cries for Marcus/chimera to get a buff! (And that molemen suck!)

  11. I don't think the taxidermist would be an issue... I also don't think spawn mother would be a problem either, but could be on the edge. The sow might need a few games to try - without Ulix to grow, you just getting piglets, and with GG2 they aren't scheming so it's probably fine. However, the sow and slop haulers, and hog whisperers, suddenly you have a lot of summoning together, so that could become an issue. But, it would cost lots of good cards - so i don't really know. Helpful!

  12. Did you lock strategies, deployments and schemes in the end? What did you choose?

Are you considering allowing/trying summoners? It's the sort of format I'd love to play spawn mother in - I don't think many of the summoner henchmen are particularly oppressive.

On that from, do you ban taxidermists, slop haulers and the sow?
