…I have done  playtesting over the years, and I can say that none of them have had the intent to produce more powerful models than before, even if the outcome of them was that.

And in that regard, it also needs to be mentioned that a lot of this has been necessary just to make minions viable. Most core box minions won’t see the any table time - broken new releases or not. The minions you see are generally 3action models (like leap), Utility (Healers/Tools for..), and/or really cheap or enforcer level beaters.  But even if newer releases makes minions more palatable, they aren’t doing anything for older models like Showgirls, Death Marshalls or Belles.

  2. There are more issues.

The SKU bloat makes it harder to stock and distribute, and Wyrd has never been good at getting things to market in the first place - Personally I’d applaud a keyword box set approach with a full keyword at €120-130 along with lesser starters.

There’s been a shift in design philosophy in model rules. Newer models are more contained and thus rely less on keyword synergy e.g. Crookskins attack Mv and is in itself able to hand out Staggered. Defensive abilities take a lesser toll on hits, if any. Resulting in obvious balance issues compared to older models. This reeks of the GW rules-as-marketing approach, and works counter to wanting a vast offering of models,  when you constantly invalidate older models to sell new ones.

Personally, I’d prefer making my purchases based on model look/theme, rather than considering whether a Tull or Linh Ly will give me easier wins than Ironsides. The variety means nothing unless every choice is viable. This doesn’t mean that every crew should work in every situation, but you shouldn’t be able to take a set list to a tournament and reliably podium with no regards for opponent/objectives/terrain.

What I can't figure out is where Dr. Silas and Trial and Error fit in. Their faction is Outcasts, but the two keywords live in Guild (Asylum) and Neverborn (Half-blood). They aren't listed as versatile. I'm just confused about them.

Dr. Silas is there to allow Outcast to hire Neverborn/Guild models. You only have access to them, if you run Angel Eyes as a Leader.

…but Teddy just really became a secondary choice.

You’re right, those choices are everywhere.

I find it a poor marketing strategy to make your existing product obsolete to sell new stuff. It works for toys like LEGO with rotation and limited shelf time, or GW; where jumping the gun on a new army will call for a 2nd and third mortgage, but for Malifaux where the next OP crew is a paltry €100-130 compared to collecting a full faction toolbox, it just seems like bad business, making it more likely to give new players a poor experience with the game.

Speaking for myself, in the end I’d much rather that my next purchase is a choice based on theme/aestethics of cool models, and that the accompanying rules provide me with a fun experience to play around with an aspect of the game system, rather than considering whether a purchase will guarantee a win or compromise my chances. I’ve got 22 crews in my collection, with more than a handful on my immediate ‘want’ list. I used to paint a crew/month, but I’m not buying anything these days because of rules creep – that’s €600 that I’ll burn on other hobbies, and not making those purchases will stop me from looking for what would come after collecting my most immediate ‘wants’.

  5. There’s been a shift in design philosophy - which is great, new minions and enforcers seem much more appealing compared to older models and henchmen.

Which is of course sad. Because why start collecting a new thematic keyword, when half+ the models will be subpar to the most recent expansion.

So rather than Wyrd using rules imbalance to push new sculpts, I for one, would love to see the same tactic applied to pushing the old stuff. With 80ish masters/keywords there is less reason to burn resources push new stuff out, when they can make the old stuff viable - I really don’t care whether models are ‘new’ to buy, just that they look good and work within the game - and this would have the added benefit of offering less complexity(model count) to new and casual players, rather than turn them away from the game.

So this thread is less for discussion, but rather to provide the Wyrd-oes inspiration on how to make the old stuff viable. So they can churn a profit and keep producing the greatest miniature game out there.

My own proposal “Give Teddy Toss”.

Everyone loves the big murder bear, but he has fallen out of favour from being vulnerable and not offering anything special (there’s plenty of beater models) to help you win. So why not give him Toss.

Toss will offer Pandora/Dreamer some much needed mobility to their crews, and suddenly Teddy will have a table presence worth 10 stones. (Throw it in as a bonus action and everyone will love his efficiency).

As an added bonus, you could allow the Kade/Teddy discount in both Nightmare/Woe to encourage collecting both crews.

I really like making themed lists - here's a list based on evil woods I really wanna give a try😄

Still not sure if it will be Titania 1 or 2 who leads it, both bring something good.

Love it. How about ditching a Waldgeist and the Ancient Pact for The Kurgan to improve the mobility of the list?

  7. Looking forward to playing with the new Nightmares, Woes and Mimics in the Ashes of Malifaux

First this combination of Woe and Nightmare :

Trimming the deck was awesome back in GG0-1. And Insidious Madness have great synergy with the Woe. Their fast, resilient and have decent damage potential. So now with added Delirium and Delirious Thralls waiting in the wings to pass out Adversary, I imagine some great fun.

The sisters looks cool to bring Pandora forth as a rider/kade/dorian replacement.

What cool stuff are you considering?

Another small update for the interested...

I think the described problem occurs because with android I already have the GG season 4 in the app and the iOS app still is in GG season 3. So wenn my app used the season 4 schemes, the iOS app replaced them with season 3 schemes with resulted in the problems.

Anyone knows when season 4 launches for iOS?

GG4 is available on iOS, she just needs to update the app.

…lucid dream or vivid nightmare should be reworked, at least for dreamer1…

    It should definitely be reworked.

Lucid Dream was too much pre nerf, but the nerf made the ability so ineffective it feels moot to even go through the motions.

But with Burns and Madness you might argue that Lucid Dream was right where it was supposed to be.

Hey all. First game of Malifaux in a long time next week. I'm taking Nellie against Levie in Cloak and Dagger. All I remember was last time I played Levie was an absolute pain the arse to play against. Does anyone have any general tips to counter him? Thanks for any pointers.

Levi is an arse, as he dishes out tons of damage.

Nellie and her Journalists will have a distinct advantage in controlling the Interacts in Cloak & Dagger. So even though Levi might kill you, he’ll have a tough time scoring points off the strategy. So you’ll play for points.

Distraction +X will be one of your most powerful tools in buying time. Levi wants his Focus +X to do max. damage. That along with Stunned and Slow.

Soulstones, even if you can’t use them for reducing damage, you can use them to give negative flips to the damage flip. This again hurts Levi.

Levi himself is a distraction. Look to the crew that feeds him. Marlena, the Scavengers and Waifs, take them out, and you’ll neuter the old child diddler greatly.

    Hi everyone

if Sebastian is within 3" of my posioned Group, what happens?

    - i activate f.e. RN with 7 Posion: does it heal 1? does it loose 1 Poiosn? Does it get one damege? Please help (you see - my english...)

    Thanks!

    You mean ‘Catalyst’.

If the model has Poison +X, it takes 1 damage, regardless of it’s poison level.

You do not remove poison, that is only for resolving the condition at end of turn.

The reason it mentions it being from Poison is that your Experimental models will heal from it, and Tri-Chi models reduce it to 0. And there’s probably other exceptions I don’t recall.

thanks! this clarifies things greatly. One follow up; would the gearlings 'expert getaway' protect it from hazardous terrain only on its active? Or only when walking? Or would it protect in this instance of the defensive trigger placing the gearling? as well as pushes and other out of activation 'moves'

It will protect it during all moves/pushes/places in and out of activation. So the gearling will only suffer hazardous, if it takes an action within the terrain - that isn’t just a move i.e. attack, or someone pushes hazardous terrain into contact with it.

Alright, thanks guys. I think I understand a bit more now. I still don't think he's all that and a bag of chips some of the people I've heard say but I do some see value in certain matchups.

Don’t underestimate him. He is a great model and can singlehandedly score a couple of point in just about any crew, but whether he has the synergy to work with the rest is another matter. He’s one of those discrete work horses that’ll always deliver, but rarely do anything remarkable.

  14. He is a neat little package, but I rarely run him outside Yan Lo.

I see a point in bringing him with Torment, handing out Staggered while adding some much missed speed to the crew.

In my Redchapel he always loses out, as I want to bank on Terrifying. Instead I bring Yin with some of the same mobility, and the ability to bank on Seamus’ Why Hello Love! Or else I bring Arrrchie, who have more synergy.

One of his biggest drawbacks are that he is alive.

  15. Make it simple for yourself. Try playing in keyword at first, all models have their purpose and use. Learn when they’re appropriate to use.

Maybe look up T&G Productions on YouTube, and the Harlefaux show. They’ve got some great insights for you.

Thank you for your in put.  I've only ordered my Hooded Rider for now, though I will look into a Teddy, the title box for Pandora, and maybe the Iggy/Aversion box.

    Good choice - have fun.

Look up the podcast Harlefaux, their first episode was on Pandora - and they did the reveal on her title as well. On YouTube, they do battle reports as T&G Productions, and they’re my personal favourite malifaux content.

Hi anyone, i'm really new here, and after a few initial attempts I choosed to go with Nekima. I have bought the 3ed core box and the box with Hayreddin and the 2 bbs. Do I need something other? Can u please explain me how to use this crew for the best? And maybe give me some lists to play with?
Is this a good master for a beginner?
    Thank you :)

It’s a fairly simple crew - they fly fast and hit hard, but don’t let that fool you into thinking they’re all about the ultra violence.

Your key strength is your mobility. You tie down your opposing crew, punching them in the gut with your leader and her Matures, while you send out your lesser minions to do the scheming, while tossing them scraps of meat to grow up strong for when your monsters inevitably dies.

Be wary of ressurs. The bastards have a way of eating your resources (corpse markers), turning them into zombies, actions and what-nots. Their abundant Terrifying will also see you struggle from your ‘average’ Wp and drain your hand.

  18. Whuddayamean? Yan Lo is the coolest thunder master out there?

He’s got speed - with Yin and Manos and tons of pushes/Obey.

He’s tough as heck, when you get in his bubble.

And if you pick up a Kabuki Warrior, you can make a Min3 Terrifying 11 model that hands out -flips on Wp.
