  3. 2023 Monthly painting challenge - June

    Well, in the month of June, I finally, finally managed to get some time to actually sit down and enjoy painting. Not gonna lie, I had been in a bit of a funk for a while with my painting.

    So, I decided to have some fun, and mess around with the Lightning Bugs. Instead of a Slop Hauler, I added in a piggy, so my June total makes 22 Soulstones. Yay!

    I went with some heavy-handed OSL on these guys, and, true to form, my photography skills continue to suck, but nonetheless, here they are! Critiques and feedback are, of course, always welcome, and I'm looking forward to the opportunity to actually get more involved in this great community again next month!

  12. 2023 Monthly painting challenge - January

    My First 24SS of Bayou have been completed, being Zipp (15SS) and the First Mate (9SS).

    These guys were really a bit of a testbed for my colour scheme for my Bayou. Hopefully, the Silurid flesh is a bit more vibrant to the eye.

    A bunch of fun models, but most of all this month, I have been on  bender of building models and getting bases prepared!

    I'll see you in February, where it'll be all about the piggies! See you then!

  13. 2023 Monthly painting challenge - January

    In 2023 (despite it being the Chinese Year of the Rabbit), I am declaring it the Year of the Pig. And the Gremlin. And the Silurid. And maybe some other swamp creatures!

    It's the Year of the Bayou!

    Over the course of 2023, I will be meeting my monthly goals with some specific Bayou. In January, it'll be Zipp (15SS) and The First Mate (9SS).

    However, over the course of 2023, I will be working towards a larger goal, being to paint every member of: Infamous, Kin, Big Hat, Sooey, Tricksy, Swamp Fiend, and Wizz-Bang, as well as all my Versatiles and Pigs!

    Obviously, this is quite, quite stupid. The production line starts today, and I have already used my test-bed models to get consistent colour schemes worked out. Wish me luck on this voyage through the swamp!

  14. 2022 Monthly Painting Challenge - December

    Dear Friends,

    I hope you are having a wonderful, relaxed, fun end of year. For December, I thought I would give a quick update on my pledge, and then show you the crews I painted this year!

    In December, I finished 2 Cat Herders (12SS), 3 Ailuromaniacs (3 SS), 7 more cats (14SS), 3 Union Miners (15SS), Fitzsimmons (8SS), and 2 Saboteurs (10SS), so 62SS in total. Rather than show you the individual shots, I have done a few groups photos. Whenever I paint a crew, I try to do so with a uniting theme (normally base texture and a dominant and complementary colour), so as to unite the crews. Let me know what you think!

    I've learned a lot over 2022, and even now, I look at these guys and think "Yeah, I need to touch that up", etc.

    Maybe I will - one day - but for the moment, the shelves of grey plastic call to me, and ask to be primed and painted.

    More importantly, however, I had lots of fun, painting mine, and looking at all your amazing work, and I hope you will all join in again next year!

    2022 Monthly Painting Challenge - Octobre

    Well, would you look at the time? I made it with over an hour to spare!

    So, what did I paint this month? I completed 25SS of M&SU!

    First off, 9SS of Amina Naidu.

    A very simple model. I really wanted the scarf and sash to come across as a vibrant gold. I think I managed that. Also, stripey pantaloons!

    Second, 16SS of Gunsmiths.

    Nice models, these. I think the shadows on the leather was a little harsh, but forgivable. The jeans are a bit too vibrant (Scale 75 Tesla Blue), but this is the unifying colour for the M&SU for me.

    ...and how do they look, so far, as a unified crew? Well, the six models to date look like this:

    Which is looking fine to me. Other than the bases, which need some touchup work, obviously.

    What's up for November? Steamfitters, Miners, and maybe Miss Step!

  20. 2022 Monthly Painting Challenge - September

    I hope everyone has had an amazing September!

    I have completed 29SS this month, and met my targets!

    I'm on holidays for a week, so I needed to get these guys finished before time. I messed around with an idea this month; I used a diluted Basilicanum Grey / Black Templar Contrast Paint mix as a liner wash prior to painting (similar to Reaper Paint's 'Liner'). It worked quite well, I think.

    So this month was M&SU. I decided to keep the militaristic colours of the Captain through the entire M&SU crew as a unifying component. How'll that work with Amina, or a Steamfitter? No idea. I ended up with a blue and brass combination. The blue is a touch deeper and darker in real life (I'm not a great photographer). Onto the minis!

    I've been looking forward to painting The Captain (10SS). I really nice sculpt (albeit a bit of a rough cast, regrettably).

    Toni was next (15SS). I couldn't deal with the hairstyle, so I sculpted (poorly) a tight plait. It worked ... ok.

    Overall, I was pretty happy with this month's lot. Next month, it'll be either more M&SU, or some remaining cats from my partially-completed Alt-Plague Caitlin crew!

  22. 2022 Monthly Painting Challenge - August

    Or, rather, Caedrus screeching in with two hours to spare.

    ...and, I can't upload an image via imgur (it's inexplicably down), and the file size is too large for a direct upload (exceeding 65kb?!?), so I shall instead ask you to trust me that I have actually completed:

    3 Ailuromaniacs, 2 cat herders, and 3 Malifaux Cats ... so I managed just enough points, in just enough time. Whew!

    As soon as I can upload some images, I definitely will!

  24. 2022 Monthly Painting Challenge - July

    Folks, I have to say, life has been tremendously busy of late. Once again, I find myself adulting far more than I would wish.

    In fact, I was struggling for time so much this month that I only kept up the soulstone count by finishing off some minis from a couple of months ago.

    Two convict gunslingers, coming in at 16SS. These guys weren't my favourite. I enjoyed doing the NMM on the guns (slowly, slowly getting better at this), and the dry-brushed pigments on the legs worked well. The stripes on the cloth were always going to be a will-I-like-it, will-I-not ... and it's not. Shoulda left the outfit plain. Having said that, the whole minis are pretty much blue and tan, so maybe any extra colour helps. Well, they're done.

    Next, Mad Dog Brackett, at 10SS.

    Not too bad. The glow of his cigar worked well on some finer OSL, but my hatefully poor photography doesn't show it so well.

    Finally, the next installment for my Plague, and the only start-to-finish for the month, it's 7SS of Princess!

    An easy one to paint, this one. A pity the base's drain outlet didn't come out right, and looks a bit wonky. The blue glow is a unifying feature of this keyword, but I can't help but wonder if I should jazz up the base with a smaller cut offering a gift to the princess. Hmm, I might need to come back to this one!

    So, 33SS later, July is done. Onto August, where more Plague await!

  25. 2022 Monthly Painting Challenge - August

    For the month of August (runs to calendar, and realises that it's nearly August, promptly panics) I shall be painting the annoyingly low-value Plague units ... auilorophobes, and so many cats.

    Any requests for cat colour schemes?
