  1. Yan Lo is fun. Even with the nerf. Always felt a bit silly using Manos' reliquary. New crewbox coming december/january. Yan Lo's powering up mechanic is cool as long as your games don't get cut short. His attack action to place next to a model and then push said model 2-10" is oddly pleasing. Lots of eastern themed models in the keyword, in case that's a pro or a con for you. What I enjoy is the general tankiness and mobility inherent in the crew. But I've not played McCabe so I can't really compare. I bet there's cool stuff to pull off with artefact shenanigans. Plus you get to paint a horse. Not too many models in Malifaux let you do that. And he leaves a door open for Explorers, and they seem to be getting some neat stuff in the future so... Possibilities, possibilities.
  2. @Caedrus I did a simple 2-nighter for Rotten Harvest. Will post it in the current challenge thread when it's ok to do so. Good to see many finished paintjobs this month. Beautiful things. _______ As for the shelf of shame bit... My stuff is a bit all over. Lot of it unbuilt to save space, includes a few crew boxes and a bunch of singles from many factions I have lying about. One core box is just full of random single sprues. Real box of delights. Here's things that are built and taking space at my hobby corner: All stuff that I'd quite like to paint, but 2020 has been driven by more immediate gaming related projects. Band and Rasputina crew will definitely be projects for 2021. They will be glorious. But for now, that's that. I hope everyone had a good October.
  3. Quick work with those metallics. Looking good!
  4. Finished the Elven warband and started on another big-ish project (51 minis). Will be a while before that's done though. Skaeth & Lighaen. Centaur & battlecat. Below a family photo of the entire warband: ___ My Wyrd mini for the month was Paul Crockett: Co-worker wanted me to go paint at their place, a little paint jam. Was a fun night and I guess I now have a painted Paul Crockett. ___ Month ago I was planning to buy an OOP GW boardgame. Space Crusade to be exact, but on payday afternoon I noticed that some bugger had bought the game that very morning. So I did what any reasonable adult with disposable income does, I browsed the auction site some more and bought another OOP GW boardgame! That game ended up being Silver Tower. Rules seem really appealing so now I'm quite motivated to get my set painted, all 51 minis, so I can play some while it's still 2020. Started off with some basic goons, Kairic Acolytes: These were followed by the first Hero, Excelsior Warpriest and his Gryph-hound (Gryph was painted same time as Paul): And in the closing days of September I finished first of the six Tzaangor elite minions: All that trim is killing me. At least there's only five more to go. ____ Contrary to my usual style, I'm mostly following official colour schemes for Silver Tower. I find it mentally freeing to just go with somebody else's designs. Helps me keep a healthy pace with a project where speed is somewhat important. January: 21 minis February: 28 minis March: 17 minis April: 1 mini May: 2 minis June: 0 minis July: 43 minis August: 90 minis September: 14 minis Total: 216 minis So that's September. Fun and surprisingly productive when it came to painting. Here's hoping I'll have more than just five Tzaangor to show for October. Have a good one!
  5. Your metal crews kick ass. Eager to see what you manage to do with Ulix crew.
  6. @Caedrus Painted 6ss Finished Paul on Thursday: I always forget how poor lighting is when I go paint & chat. And sometimes ergonomics. Still, was a fun paintjob over an evening. I was really surprised how big Paul is. Wide shoulders and pretty tall even in this semi-crouched position. I wouldn't want to bump into him on a forest hike.
  7. @astapable lovely skin on those reporters. And good to see all of you getting minis painted. __ I finally started working on this month's Wyrd piece. Built Paul Crockett for Thursday's small painting jam: I've proxied him a few times and I reckon he's pretty neat in a Marcus crew. Definitely on the top of my "I want to field this" pile. Aiming for another 1-night paintjob. Skin and fur, should be fun. Just barely over a week to go, hopefully everyone else is also getting on top of their painting goals this month
  8. Zesty and catsgamesandpizza do show up as just links for me in this thread.
  9. Last month with massed Battlelore posting : Blood Harvesters Viper Legion Flesh Ripper Brutes Obscenes Blood Sisters Grotesques Berserkers Doombringer Chaos Lord That's entirety of the barbarian faction for Battlelore 2nd edition. Third and final faction fully painted. Took me about two weeks or so. There's only a single neutral dragon left to paint for the game. Feeling pretty good about this. For the monthly Wyrd challenge I did a bit for both my arcanists and Thunders: Some magnetised arachnids so I can play 1 swarm & 1 single, or three singles. Fun single evening Lotus Eater. One of my favourite Wyrd sculpts in a long while. I also started working on my Beastgrave set: Foot troops for the Wood Elf warband. Took me a week to figure out a colour scheme for the group, but I like what I ended up with. I didn't like the minis at first, but they grew on me as project went on. Two models to go for this band in September. Final thing I painted on 31st was a return to my mostly painted Heroquest set: This is a Gargoyle. I got Heroquest for cheap to practice painting on some years back but I quit about 80% into the project and focused more on my Malifaux. Quick paintjobs so I won't feel bad for letting my 5 year old manhandle the minis. January: 21 minis February: 28 minis March: 17 minis April: 1 mini May: 2 minis June: 0 minis July: 43 minis August: 90 minis Total: 202 minis I think it's safe to say you can expect a lot less finished minis for remainder of the year Have a good one, and onwards to September!
  10. I wouldn't. But I like having painted stuff in my living room display, so "does it get played?" is the least of my concerns.
  11. It does feel nice when people value your output enough to pay for it. Even if I personally do find commission painting a bit too draining to do all that often. I hope they got delivered safe 'n sound.
  12. I bet he'll fit right in with those flaming marshals. Coming up nicely!
  13. @Caedrus 17ss done Steam Arachnid (3ss) & Arachnid Swarm (8ss): Few layers of silver metallics and a bit of blue gem effect for the "eyes". The swarm is magnetized so I can play three individual arachnids if I so choose (bases not pictured). Lotus Eater (6ss): Got this guy done in one evening. Long evening to be sure. Considered tattoos and smoothing up the back for evening #2, but inspiration took me elsewhere. "Good enough, onwards to the next one". This was fun to paint. So simple. Another one of those minis where I'd like to give my compliments to the unnamed sculptor. Toyed around by mixing some yellowish brown ink into my base skintone. I like how it altered the colour. Worked well with the purple shadows. ____ Lovely work, the lot of you. I hope August has been kind to you.
  14. Big thing for July was me finishing Daqan Lords (aka. Knights & Golems) for Battlelore 2nd edition: Greyhaven Battlemages Ironbound (magic robots) Riverwatch Riders (wife helped out with the horse skin) Citadel Lancers (wife said hell no when I asked for help with the horse skin on these as well) Rune Golems Roc Warrior Siege Golem It wasn't all boardgame junk though. Did a proxy ganger for Batman Miniatures Game: Joanne from Hasslefree. This was one of those one evening paintjobs. Lovely simple sculpt from Hasslefree. Joy to paint. And finally my monthly Wyrd challenge mini: Samurai. Neat fact, Samurai box was the thing that got me into Malifaux. I got them for painting and was invited to a demo game while I was paying for it at the LGS counter. Cool model. January: 21 minis February: 28 minis March: 17 minis April: 1 mini May: 2 minis June: 0 minis July: 43 minis Total: 112 minis I was going to take a break from Battlelore, still got about 80 minis for it with the barbarian faction. But after playing a knights vs undead game wife asked I get them done sooner rather than later. I guess that's a project for August Have a good one, folks
  15. Fine looking skin. In my experience painting darker skintones isn't that scary if you stick to a suitably warm brown and highlight towards caucasian skin or beige. No idea what paints you used but looks like you highlighted towards khaki/beige, gives it a really nice look. Really nice flipflops too.
  16. Doing a Lotus Eater for my Thunders. Incorrectly assembled my first one so I can't fit a final part in. Oh freck it, I'll only need one anyway. Two tops. I managed to assemble #2 in proper order. Should be fun. Haven't done skin in a while. Also doing magnetised arachnids/arachnid swarm to clear up space from my built-shelf. They'll be done quick 'n lazy.
  17. I varnish all of mine, but I did play for a year or more without varnishing and had zero issues during that time. And I average 1-2 games per week all year long. I'd say you're more likely to break the mini than the paintjob when playing with Wyrd ____ @GlowingFruit that alligator on the back is just so👍
  18. Ouch, that looks rough. Any idea what caused the issue? How did you apply the varnish? How long did they dry between coats?
  19. Extended Reach is decent defensive tech. Offensively it delivers with stat 6 min 3 with the Oni free focus thing. Throw in the bonus action to block healing and I'll consider it. I've gotten good use out of hiring one in several games.
  20. It's a good ability. Jorogumo is a decent counter hire out-of-keyword, so consider that too. I wouldn't spam Extended Reach for the sake of spamming it, but single Crime Boss has been a solid hire and Yamaziko has a place in some lists as well.
  21. I borrowed that from the library a while back. Good read. I'm definitely considering buying it some day. Very good reference material. And the dinotopia pictures are adorable!
