  1. January 20th at 10am. All are welcome for a shindig at I'm Board! Games in Madison! Address: 6917 University Ave.Middleton, WI 53562 Registration starts at 10am, and including time for shenanigans we should be rolling by 11am! We're doing 3 rounds, standard GG'18 at 50SS. Entry is free, prizes will likely not be handed out.
  2. I don't disagree! Nico doesn't really need upgrades. In fact, I often take him without any. But Malifaux isn't played on an upwards scale, and there's no list that's an auto-win. These upgrades are about flexibility and digging into the niches the masters inhabited, not power-bumps. Unless you're Seamus/Yan-Lo.
  3. I can't even tell if you're serious anymore. Why "probably?" There are no mandatory purchases. Arguing that an upgrade is bad by saying "but you probably will take Vulture with Nico and one more living model" is pretty weak. For one, I definitely won't. Because, you know, I want to win and design a crew that works. To be more clear, saying Superior Undead is bad because you're going to take a crew that doesn't work with it is such a poor argument that I can't believe you're even making it. If I said Sebastian is a terrible model because I'll probably not take models that give out Poison with him, you'd just look at me like I was insane. Finally, in practice, Superior Undead is actually awesome. There's very little that allows a model to just not be dead when it should be. Your opponent's work, and AP, is wasted. It costs you 2SS, no AP to do, and very little effort to keep it in LoS. Plus, it immediately allows the model to benefit from Nico's Undead buffs. It is such a great Upgrade that I doubt I'll ever make a Nico list without it.
  4. Because summoning threats might help win games but it doesn't actually win games. A key scheme marker placed at range will win games. Especially late in the game. Remember that summons can't place Schemes the turn they're summoned. Besides, that's not the only reason you take the upgrade. You take it to avoid having to take the Mort + Spleen combo (which is a 10stone tax that I hate paying). Why are we assuming we're taking ALL the living models? I can assure you a list with a Nurse, Vulture, Rafkin, Anna, and Asura isn't going to win you any games with Nico. And it has nothing to do with underwhelming upgrades.
  5. I think you're incorrect. Nico's ability to re-summon his totem and drop a scheme, while putting corpses on the board with barely any cost (trash cards in Round One), is certainly useful, if not great. But his ability to cause a living friendly to become Undead (thus benefiting from his buffs) while giving it a turn or two of life is SUPER GOOD. No, they don't alter Nico's playstyle. But the second, at least, opens Nico's hiring pool up to some of the models that he might not have taken before (Anna Lovelace, Rafkin, Sebastian) because there were always better undead models. So while it doesn't alter Nico himself, it IS going to significantly change what he takes into the game.
  6. I did a Poison Nico list recently. Nico + Undertaker, TLB, Shadow Embrace Vulture Rafkin Shikome Kentauroi 2x Canine Remains 2x Guild Autopsies Kentauroi was essential for setting up. On Turn 1 he carries Nico twice with 2 walks, who, lacking Corpses on Turn 1, will end up casting Rigor Mortis on Kentauroi and whatever else happens to be close. Rafkin moves up to the Kentauroi's position. On turn 2, the Fast Kentauroi Walks once, putting Rafkin into a favorable position, then charges. Gives Poison for the second attack's damage bump, and drops a Corpse for Nico. Guild Autopsies choose their target for poison, something big, then canine remains soften it up (in my game one even dropped a scheme before charging). Then Shikome comes from the back field and levels it. If the big thing's already activated, then it is likely the canines are putting it at -2 Df. Shikome, if the poisoned target is an Adversary and within 6" of Rafkin (that's the goal, yo), is doing a minimum of 4 with a baked-in trigger to ignore armor, striking from up to 14" away, and doing it all on while the target's at -2 Df. Ouch. You should be spending Nico's summons on Shikome or Kentauroi. If you can get your Decay off it's dealing an extra damage and thus killing things for the trigger to summon more easily. The more Kentauroi you summon, the more corpses you have, the more chances you have for healing your busted models, and the more damage you can do with Decay. The key to this list is being flexible with Nico and remembering he can do more than summon things. In the future (I don't proxy), I'm going to replace Shadow Embrace + Vulture with a Little Gasser, and tossing the Guild Autopsies for the gassers, too.
  7. We'll be having a casually competitive tournament with a sizable prize pool on Saturday, September 30th. Lunch will be provided! Entry is $10, and 100% of our proceeds are going towards either the meal or prize support. The Event is held at I'm Board! Games in Middleton. Address: 6917 University Ave, Middleton, WI 53562 Due to the nature of the event and the fact that we're giving you lunch, I'd greatly prefer it if you were to tell me in advance that you're coming. Please RSVP with a Message here, or, you can find our Facebook group "Madison-Malifaux" and join, then RSVP on the Event you can find within. Tournament is standard GG'17: 50SS, Fixed Faction, 2-hour Rounds. Meet at 10 to get setup, then we start at around 10:30! Hope to see you there!
  8. (1) Void Tear. Place two 50mm markers. Hazardous, severe. End of turn, summon one void wretch in base contact with any Void Tear. Would give her a little more synergy with the ressers, too. Not that she isn't, I just don't see as much synergy with her as with Outcasts. Anyway, I'm just spitballing. I'm not being very serious as the cards are already written, tested, and either printed or are soon to be.
  9. I'd love to see a Molly playstyle that incentivizes a non-summoning approach. Perhaps a Trigger on Whispered Secret that allows you to take it again against another model. Or that lets you blow up your own models to do nasty things to opponents. Actually, strengthening the non-summoning abilities of Masters would be great in general. Particularly Nicodem. For Kirai, since she's been promised the ability to raise the dead (like, for realzy), maybe she can kill her Spirits (or damage them) to summon Living models, representing the spirit becoming the person it once was? Maybe the Burning Man is weakening the walls between the Void and Malifaux. What if Tara could summon Void Wretches, now? Yan Lo walks the paths between worlds, too. Maybe he doesn't need to be in one place at a time?
  10. Molly has so many things she can do, I don't see her as a Summoner, really. That's just a thing in her toolkit. As such, I summon 2 (sometimes 3) Punks per game, and maybe the Totem. Maybe a Drowned. If your opponent is foolish enough to clump up, I like to drop a Punk Zombie in the middle of them and then use her (0) to make him take Slice and Dice. Tends to drain their hand if you do it early in the turn, or kill things if you do it late in the turn. If they flip well enough, then bully for you, those cards aren't in their deck any more! This pairs nicely with her (0) that forces Terror duels (as you've just drained their hands). Otherwise I use her high cards to give and hand out Paralyze. I like to drop her totem in a clump if I have that middling Crow in hand. I use Drowned if I can annoy my opponent and assure that I get a scheme out of it. I don't use the Students, as I prefer the Punk Zombies. I run Molly by forcing my opponents to spend their resources (cards and stones) dealing with heaps of small things that cost me next-to-nothing. Students are more survivable if you hire them, but the Punks are more inline with my play-style.
  11. Well, that's not what it says. Hence the question. I think the real question is: does this work for damage flips? Or do damage flips not count as "against" the model?
  12. If you can swing it I would take Yin. Yin is only 2SS more than the Punk Zombie, and with Sybelle's Terrifying and her force to attack ability, Yin's Gnawing Fear can do a lot of harm. And it's a (0) so you're going to be able to beat on things, too. Plus, she's pretty durable, giving [-]s on Attack and Damage flips.
  13. From 6:30 to 9 pm on Monday, July 31st I'm hosting a Henchman Hardcore Tourney at I'm Board! We'll be following all the usual rules found in Gaining Grounds. Basics are that you need a 20SS Henchman-lead Crew with exactly 4 models. All are welcome!
  14. Accepting all-comers! Good time to learn the game and earn a prize! We'll be meeting same time, same place: Monday Nights at I'm Board! There's usually somebody there by 5. Achievement League begins July 3rd.
  15. The campaign is ending in a week; June 17th is still the date for the tournament! If you would like to participate, we have rules to get you caught-up and legal (for this tourney). Starts at 10am at I'm Board! in Middleton! ***Non-Standard Rules*** • All Players MUST use the Arsenal assembled during the Campaign. • All Games are setup exactly as Campaign games, using Campaign Ratings, Upgrades, Injuries, Game Size determinations, etc. • The Absolute Maximum for SS is 65. • Avatars are Permitted, along with Proxies for those Avatars • Injuries Incurred during Week 6 that are Annihilated after a single use (ex. Shaken, A Wayward Adventure), are NOT Annihilated and are used during each round of the Tournament. • No Advancement will occur during the Tournament, and no Injuries will be suffered. • Players that did not participate or who have fallen behind may still play in the Tournament. Each Week missed grants 5SS and a Market Flip. Note that this will preclude that player from gaining a Master and Avatar (which isn't necessarily a death sentence). • Following the Tournament (provided there's time), an unrelated Enforcer Brawl will follow, so bring an Enforcer you'd like to use. ***Standard Tournament Details*** • 3 Rounds, all round times are 120 minutes. • Follow Gaining Grounds 2017 Guidelines, Strats and Schemes. • No Restrictions on Painting. • No Proxies (save Avatars, of course) ***Prizes*** • Placing First and Second • Winning the Enforcer Brawl • Best Painted Figure - Each Player may submit one figure from his Arsenal. The winner will be through player-vote during a break. • Best Painted Arsenal - During the Lunch Break, all Arsenals will be left on the table. Players will vote on which Arsenal they like best. Only criteria should be that the Arsenal is painted in its entirety. • Best Avatar Proxy - Again, player-voted during a the final break before the Enforcer Duel. At the end of the Tournament, the player in First Place will receive the first choice from the prize pool. All other players will receive a choice of prizes from the pool in a random order. Guilders will be given out liberally.
  16. The basic idea is that you'll be playing a campaign. After the campaign, you'll be using that crew in a tournament with players from all over Wisconsin who played THE SAME CAMPAIGN. It will be super unbalanced, have a lot of crazy, and should be a lot of fun. Campaign will run 6 weeks, starting on April 24th, and ALL EVENTS will be chosen by the Madison Malifaux Guild. The Tournament will be on June 17th, and will feature the crews you spent the previous 6-weeks building up!
  17. This is still ongoing! Just letting everybody know we're alive (or Undead) and well!
  18. Come to I'm Board! on the West side of Madison for some light tournament action at 12:00pm. Tourney will use standard Henchman Hardcore rules as found in the Alternative Tournament Formats sheet on Wyrd's site. Henchman led, 20SS, must be exactly 4 models including the Henchman. This is intended as an event for new players (though all are welcome!), and to that end, no proxies are allowed and no painting rules will be enforced. If you need models or a rules demo, arrive at 11:30 and I can lend you models and teach you the game. There will be prizes!
  19. Hey, all! I'm going to be running open Malifaux events every Monday at I'm Board! in Madison, WI. I'll usually be there at 5:30. If you're in the area and want a demo or just a relaxed place to pick up a game, swing by and we'll be sure to greet ya. You should also look up the Malifaux - Madison WI group on Facebook to check for updates, gaming partners, or alternative dates/times for Malifaux.
  20. Gathering Madison's Malifaux players into one place, from 5 to 9 at I'm Board! in Middleton. Come by if you're in the area, find an opponent and start a game! I'll be giving demos, as well!
