  1. I sleeve both my cards and my upgrades, but then have two deck boxes. One for cards, one for upgrades.

It's a bit tight on my Neverborn (I think I have every released Neverborn model... I went a bit overboard) but it still fits. Well, I don't have all the metal + plastic versions, but in many cases I do...

  2. I got my butt kicked last week playing Sonnia for the first time against Hamelin... but Hamelin with two Friekorp Specialists and two Librarians. The ability to ignore Sonnia's blasts really hurt her effectiveness. We were playing the Carver scenario for an achievement league at our FLGS.

Sam on the other hand was a beast. He was behind terrain and each turn was murdering something that was on fire. Carver, Killjoy and a Wretch all taken down in one turn each or less. (Carver and Killjoy both were unwounded but on fire due to healing/regeneration).

Unfortunately Sonnia couldn't keep up with the Furious Casting and shots of the Specialists, even with her anti-magic upgrades. Once she got murdered, Sam lost all his support and joined her shortly after. So I concur with others... Sam is a beast if you can keep him hidden and safe.

  3. I've found that I nearly never used focus until I played with a Lucius crew. Once you start using focus for cheap with a lot of things that play nicely with him, it is easier to justify using it when it's not so cheap/easy in other crews.

I still don't focus as often as I should though. I think it's that optimism that I will get good enough cards even on a negative. Then math smacks me in the face, demonstrates statistical chance, and makes me regret not focusing to avoid a negative twist on the initial flip.

I did recently complete my BS: Information Systems degree after switching my major from Philosophy many years ago... apparently the math heavy curriculum didn't "stick" as far as Malifaux is concerned...

  5. I'll echo the thoughts of others. I don't usually consider the opponents faction very strongly in my crew choice. That's one of the things I like about Malifaux over some other games... hard counters are nearly non-existent.

I will consider a model or an upgrade based on faction, but most models and upgrades have other uses to consider them anyway. Condition removal is nearly always useful and every faction can generally apply conditions. I might avoid bringing along terror tots against a Guild player due to the Austringer, but that may be more personal bad luck than wise strategy.

Usually I have a pretty solid crew foundation in mind before I even know my opponent or the strategy, much less picking specifically. Usually crew synergy seems to win more games than specifically building for a certain strategy.

  6. Lilith is probably my favorite master since the 2E transition and I've played more games with her than any other master. I rarely ever take many nephilim since the early days when I was trying for grow/summon lists. Now I use my crews to accomplish schemes/strats or to push stuff to Lilith to kill one at a time.

That said, I do love Barbaros. His Challenge ability as a 0 action is simply amazing. And if you can focus the enemies attention on him instead of Lilith, you can use soulstones and his natural toughness to keep him alive and a distraction for a long time. The pushes he has can be used to push people over to Lilith to kill or away from Barbaros to make them spend actions to move back in to attack him.

The really evil part about Challenge is that it seems to shut down your opponent trying to target their own models without checks as well. This works nicely against crews like Nicodem or Nurses or other support pieces that are just around to give bonuses to friendlies.

  7. Waldgeists are one that I have been relying on more and more. They are durable and can really tie up opponents.

Barbaros is the other one. He's a bit pricey, but stick him in the middle of the table and throw out Challenge. Your opponents will either burn through cards or end up trying to kill him. He's durable enough and can use soul stones to prevent that this will keep them busy for quite some time. For added fun, combine willpower debuffs or things like Teddy that can get free swings to ensure your opponent is even more nervous about targeting any models.

Remember too that Challenge also your opponent from targeting their own friendly models without the check...

  8. That enforcer brawl was nuts (I played the Hooded Rider). Raphael was nuts... even late in the game when we would kill him to try to narrow his lead, he would just show back up on his next action in the perfect place to murder Izamu and Killjoy! Remind me not to underestimate the power of a suicidal gremlin...

Great playing with you and congrats on the award!

  9. Whoops, nice catch on the damage, that was just a typo here, I was using 3/4/5 when we were playing.

I do expect the guild and their witch hunters will have something to say about the magic my character uses. I want to work on my ability to disguise myself in case there are any witnesses. Our first session the neverborn that were attacking took care of any guard witnesses allowing me to use my magic freely, but I don't expect that to always be the case. As a backup my character has dabbled in martial arts and is the group doctor if I really don't want to risk using magic...

  10. So a group of us just started playing TTB. We had a great time coming up with characters. I've played a lot of games and sometimes characters just feel like mechanics and it's up to the players to come up with the fluff, but TTB does both together quite nicely. When two us flipped the same Station fate, we instantly realized we were siblings and it all came together fantastic.

By virtue of some card flips, my character ended up with a 3,-1,-1,-1 for mental aspects and then 3,2,1,1,1,1 for skills learned later in life. Deciding that my character was going to be a sorcerer after passing through the breach, I quickly ended up with a 6 AV for sorcery with 3 Intellect and 3 Sorcery. Since another part of my fate was the "chariot of winter" line, I decided that I'd pick the Cold immuto for elemental spells.

What I'm trying to figure out is if I'm doing this right. It seems quite powerful and I generally cheat against me before I'll cheat in my favor, so I wanted to verify this was correct.

Elemental Touch magica is a TN 3T and does 1/2/3

Increased Damage immuto is +2/+4 for +1/+1/+1 or +2/+2/+2

Cold immuto is +3 for slow / +6 for paralyze

So, in theory, my character could use a Elemental Touch with 2x Increased Damage and 2x Cold for:

    TN: 13T

    3/4/6 damage

    Paralyze

With a 6 AV and the first pursuit talent of Dabbler after session 1 to ignore one T, I can cast that spell with a 7+ for big damage and an automatic paralyze. I understand that the magic section has a few rough edges and requires FM calls, and I stayed away from some of the combinations that seemed really ridiculous, but I wanted to at least be playing with the rules as written for what I did pick.

  11. I'm fairly new to Malifaux as well and started with Rasputina as well (at least until the Ten Thunders box set releases and arrives).

In the recaps, I see a lot of distress about willpower resists and lure. Doesn't Frozen Heart counteract most of this? I haven't looked at those abilities, but if they require willpower duels, I thought the Frozen Heart of most of Rasputina's crew would allow them to automatically succeed.
