  1. If it helps, we've also had the experience of one powergamer turning up with his completely optimised against someone else list and just crushing them. We also, whenever talking to our friends from other clubs, hear heaps of tales about how combination X won the last 5 of their events and has had to be internally banned, only for combination Y to take over. We don't like the sound of that. As I keep saying. We DO NOT LIKE the way the game plays out when someone gets to pick their faction as a response to anothers. We DO LIKE flavourful games using the set subfactions. I really don't understand why the concept that people like something different from other people is so upsetting to you guys. It doesn't upset me that you like playing the game much more competitively, so why be so offended that I like a casual game, based on playing the subfactions, against friends, for a few hours of fun? [edit]: Re: Fluff argument being tacked on. Its not about desiring fluff. Its about knowing that doing thematic lists will give us a nice experience.
  2. My point on wanting themed lists (belles in seamus) withstanding, I'll comment on this idea: The objection is only vaguely brought from other games. It is more brought from people not wanting our malifaux games being: "Oh look, he's a ressurectionist, and I have to deliver a message. Let me just throw in these two models which reem undead, and add in this flying speedy model to do the mission. Oh good. This will be easy". We don't want it to be about owning 30 models, so you can grab what is needed to optimise in the current mission against the current crew. We want Seamus and his belles vs. Rasputina and her ice thingies, or vs. Hoffman and his robots. Not some mishmash of random power models and silver bullets cruising for a quick win.
  3. Two things with regard to this: 1. Factions become more rounded when someone realises they'll need to do objectives. 2. Given you'll play someone you know hundreds of times over the course of a few years, the fact that a faction struggles at one mission but excels at another can be quite refreshing. Playing a hard fought game trying to do something you're good at once in a while is enjoyable. Getting to smash some face because your mission is easyer this time round is fun from time to time too...
  4. Having played a couple of games with him now, I have to say: .50 cal rampage is way too much fun... I can't work out how to use the doxies though...
  5. Your argument is facile. If I were to enter a tournament this is entirely true. If I am content to play, as my group is, using pre-picked lists, at 35 points, adhearing to the theme (eg. only belles in seamus, no wierd ghosts or frankensteins cropping up) there is a completely acceptable ballance between our lists, and no need for optimising, powergaming, list switching or similar. Semi-Casual play is preferable to Competitive play in our group.
  6. Also, have none of you seen "the howling"? (and sequels...) Heed my warning: You don't want female werewolf stereotype getting its dirty b-movie self in your peanut butter...
  7. This isnt an amazing answer but... because we dont do that. Everyone is looking to have an all rounder 35 pt group, not to tailor per game. Other games have made our group plenty wary of tailoring.
  8. So having had a little poke round the forum, I cannot find the answer to my question in anywhere immediately apparent. I shall thus ask it here in a roundabout fashion: I have done a Kirai crew, and found her to be a little on the overpowered side. At least while my circle of friends learns to play the game. Too much running through walls and replacing dead my own dead models with new models for their liking I think. Due to this, I grabbed the Seamus boxed set, and the Molly boxed set, with an air to adding her to him. Turns out that the molly set seems a bit of a waste, and I could have done with just getting molly. But I digress. I like the theme of Seamus. Him and his dead working girls. I was therefore going to get 2 dead doxies and add them to him, plus his totem. ------- Seamus, The Mad-Hatter Copycat Killer [2ss] Molly Squidpiddge [9ss] 2x Dead Doxy [10ss] Madame Sybelle [6ss] 2x Rotten Belles [8ss] ----- This was what I came up with. It seems very light on models though (presumably because molly is devouring points). Is there anything else *in theme* (Its important to me, I don't just want any old model in there) that is missing from this? Would you do something differently? Will I need extras of any models in case of raising extras? Any help would be much appreciated.
  9. When I hear bureaucrat, I think of Lucius. When I see lady justice, I think of Joss Whedon, if I'm honest. Fighty woman in corset. Sonnia, I have no idea about. I think witch pretending to be witchhunter whenever I see her, but I don't think that's what she's meant to be...
  10. The big problem is stereotypes. I don't mean this in a remotely negative way, I mean it with regards to theme: Frankenstein was a man. Jack the ripper was a man. Undertakers are a vastly male dominated profession. Japanese folklaw tells of vengeful female spirits, and to my knowledge, never men. (This statement may be wrong in its essence, but proves my point on stereotypes.) Malefaux deals in clichés. Therefore every nurse is a woman, every professor is a man. If I had to envision a female scientist, it would be the stern german female variety, and would thusly fit more snugly into the guild I think. I think the resurrectionists female count is represented well enough. Not everyone gets to be the master afterall. There are several "henchmen-esque" models kicking about to represent fairer side of the species. Sybelle and Bete may not ever be in charge of the show, but they're certainly characters who show up and do something, rather than being zombie #103.
  11. Ok, so when you do companion activations, they're all similtaniously activated, but then finish one by one, rather than in a group at the end?
  12. Thanks for the advice. Maybe someone can also clear this up for me: Lucius's aura. When does it wear off if he uses companion rules to activate with another model? And, also, when making a companion activation, does the guild guard captains 0 ability to activate a guard interrupt companion, or does it queue them up to activate after the companions?
  13. So I'm a little stumped. I got lucius because I liked his model, and then bought some more guards models to try and do a thematic list with him, but its not working out. Guild Crew - 35 - Scrap Lucius -- 4 Pool Drill Sergeant [3ss] Guild Guard [4ss] Guild Guard [4ss] Guild Guard [4ss] Guild Guard Captain [7ss] Guild Hound [3ss] Guild Hound [3ss] Ryle, Guild Pawn [8ss] That is what I went for. The lawyer got dropped because I'd otherwise be wasting a point. I think I prefer him to ryle though, so I might just waste the point. Anyway. The list just seems to have no pop. I played a couple of games and found that I was getting completely outclassed. Does anyone have any advice on what I should be tweaking in the list while staying in the guild guard / spec forces theme? And if I need to keep soulstones for lucious? (He doesn't seem to need them in the games I've played.) Also, any advice on playstyle would really help too. I suspect I'd do a lot better to just broaden the list but I like the visual.
