  1. RE the idea of excluding Oha....I do see your point @InvokeChaos but I think the thing you have to remember is that she can apply a 'no charge' condition to up to three models a turn when you include the emissary. Than you have Asami summon something and she places herself 'back in a safe position' behind the minions that will protect her. I see Oha bouncing around the board quite a bit and not being in the same place from turn to turn. So yes, she is vulnerable but I don't think she is that vulnerable plus, the threat of "death contract/false" on  her is interesting. Lastly she can take Smoke Grenades which can SEVERELY help her hide when necessary or just be out of range for a lot of the ranged attacks coming her way.

  2. I see Asami being used in a very forward position. She has a lot of movement tricks (and can even give her more with "On Wings of Wind").

My initial thoughts on key upgrades for her are:

    • A Heavenly Design
    • Grasping Strands
    • The Fate of Mortals
    • False Target/Death Contract
    • On Wings of Wind
    • Misdirection

Grasping Strands seems like something that she will be using a lot as she will be placing models near her and getting that free attack is nice. Every time I see her being engaged at the end of her activation I expect to save that one last attack to trigger her push 3" away. That means that things trying to charge her are going to have a tough time getting enough attacks to really nail her down.

A Heavenly Design is also quite important for her because it gives her another options for getting out of the way. Plus she loves scheme markers (i.e. her (0) Insatiable Hunger) to heal so I don't see leaving home without it. It serves many a roles and for 2ss it gives her some good options.

Now I know some will balk at the idea of The Fate of Mortals on her, but I see being aggressive with her and her minions nearby. So this really boosts giving her back cards she's used early in a turn after her crew gets some kills.

A key model I do see with her crew is Oha. Mostly because I think her "Hunting Song" attack action. I think this and her Drawn to Essence make it so she can help setup charge lanes for Asami's summons. Along with Oha, I see the Shadow Emissary as a key model in this crew. It does so much 1) Give fast to Oha 2) + to attack for minions 3) Card cycling. Finally, I do see Sensei Yu and Monk of Low River as eventual includes in her crew but those will take time. I think if you take Yu you don't need Monks of Low River (since Yu will take Wandering River Style).

Finally, I believe that you actually want to start off with quite a few minions in her crew to start. I think 2x Tengu + Shadow Effigy are SOLID way to get your corpse/scrap marker engine going early. My initial plan is 2x Tengu, Shadow Effigy (this package is just SO good), and 1x Komainu. These are initial scheme runners, and get help disrupt stuff. The Tengu starting on the board mean we can hand out some regen to the crew as necessary and more importantly getting some scheme markers down early to help Asami have mid/late game healing available to her. The beauty is that they'll be placing markers (and interacting to place them) also when they die we'll be dropping more. The idea is to get enough out there to give Asami some super heals when she needs em, remember there is no limit to how much she can heal.

So yeah that's my initial list ideas.

I have some variants where Ama No Zako is in there and she will just be a machine if she is (giving her Focus +2 and fast/push from Shadow Emissary is bonkers). On top of that giving her some regen is in no way a bad thing :)

Yeah I really like the look of the models so I picked up two Arcanist sets, Ramos and Colette. I have the Ramos one pretty much painted and the Colette one I'm working on next. I have no idea how they play, I just liked the look of them haha

We call that the "rule of cool" the beauty of Malifaux is that everything is balanced and good. So play what you like and no matter what you'll enjoy it.

Hey if you are still doing this some time after Aug 16th I'd definitely come in for a demo. I'm down over the line in Dracut btw

I most def am. Let me know what day is good. We usually meet Tuesdays but with enough of a heads up I can do a different day. Good thing about Tuesdays is we have a group of other players you can meet.

Let me know what works best.

Have you looked at any particular faction that interests you more than another?

    Cheers

So am I understanding correctly that the tournament is already sold out?  Is there any chance that it could be expanded to accommodate more players, or are people who want to play subject to the "Wait List" to confirm if they can play or not?

    Thank you!

My hope is to expand to 40 players but right now I need to hold off until I confirm physical space, table space, and enough terrain. When someone joins the wait list it is a first come first served format. So if someone cancels I'll contact both parties and they'll have a change to do an exchange. Also the first come first served will be exercised when I have been able to confirm the ability to accomodate for players. So if you're thinking of going as a wait list person you can add yourself and it's your best chance.

  6. As a heads up we are at 33 tickets sold as of July 26th AM. That means we have 3 remaining Early-Bird / SWAG bag tickets until I have to rerun numbers and see if we can expand to 40 players. With that said, please make sure to lock in your ticket asap.

We also had our first international attendee sign up recently. Let's show how great of a community we have here in the Northeast and welcome him (and anyone else coming from afar) to our great Malifaux community!

Thanks guys. That sounds encouraging. I was thinking of just picking out a couple of box sets. One for me and one for my boy to get started. Is that a good way to get started and learn the game? I like the idea of the starter box set because it comes with two decks of cards and two crews, but I am not crazy about the crews that it contains.

The starter box is your best option to progressively learn the game if you don't have anyone around to teach you. Besides that I'd suggest looking thru the Wyrd sites faction areas and reading the differences. Of you do that and go with them"rule of cool" (ie what you're most excited about theme and models wise) you really can't go wrong. Yes some masters are a little tougher to start the game with but none are bad. Once you've picked a list of a few boxes come back here and ask more questions. The community is great at helping players like yourself narrow down their choices.

  8. I can't see there being any way the game shrinks in popularity anytime soon. The amount of new stuff the developers have continuously given us both in rules and models is staggering. I see no slow down, and to be honest Wyrd is finally back where they worked so hard to be after transitioning from metals to plastics ~4 years ago. They have worked hard to be able to turn out constant models. As far as player numbers, I see it continuously grow year after year. We have local events in the Northeast that are constantly in the 30 player count. On top of that all the major miniatures conventions have a Malifaux tournament that is well attended.

Not sure where you play out of but take a look at the Henchman list off of the main Wyrd site and that can always help, plus the different regions of on the forums.

  9. I'll say that I've got a lot of work out of Tengu and Shadow Effigy. But agree with all the above mentioned. I'm jumping more into 10T next year as well so my list is pretty much what I've seen here. I am still unsure, from the personal experience perspective, about Oiran so can't say I have any hard data to suggest why they would be good. With that said, I'm going to be giving them a few times on the table as I think they can be key pieces in certain situations.

Quick follow up question then:  Will you be using the Wyrd prize support kits as part of the raffle?  And if so, will the guilders/poker chips be part of the raffle as well?

    Thanks!

Yes, I will have the Wyrd event prize support kits (in fact I already have 1 32 player kit). I'm going to probably supplement it with more prizes I have sitting around (and maybe some things from our main sponsor).

As far as the Guilders are concerned (I believe the Rules Packet lays that out, but if not I can clarify here).

For attending everyone will get a Guilder, 1st place will get the 1st place guilder. No guilders will be part of the raffle (unless I have extras).

I just read the event on your page, and I was curious as to what you mean by "loaded raffle / prize system".  Could you elaborate a bit, please?

    Thanks!

    Sure thing!

So I hand out prizes based on a raffle. You will get tickets for things through out the day. For example things like:

    • Playing a game with a fully painted crew
    • Playing all 5 turns of a game
    • Being the 1st to finish a game in
    • The 1st to flip for initiative in a round
    • Using proxy bases to resolve movement, (i.e. clean board state), etc.
    • etc.

Also, everyone will get a ticket during registration. Typically I give out a few extra tickets for placing 1st, 2nd, 3rd, mid-table, last place, best in faction etc. but we'll see this year. The idea of the loaded raffle/prizes is that its loaded based on accomplishing things that you should/can already do and being rewarded for it. Then you will place the tickets in a bucket and after the event I'll draw for each item.

The prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place will be UNIQUE, CUSTOM made trophies that are one of a kind. I do not give prizes for winning 1st, 2nd, 3rd in Wyrd toys, those will show up in the raffle piles. Winning is prize enough (plus a trophy) :).

Hope that makes sense and clears things up. Let me know if you have any more questions.

I appreciate Wyrd explaining the whys behind this, however does this mean everytime the US "meta" whines about something enough a model gets screwed?

This is durogatory, and mis-represents how Wyrd approaches changes in the FAQ/Errata. People from all players bases have chimed in (beta testers, Wyrd testers, levi players, non levi players, tournament players, non-tournament players, etc) that Levi was just above the power curve. He had access to an ability (that he effectively could use for free; his wounds which he didn't care about) to gain something as good as a focus. The change (as Justin clearly lays out) was from Wyrds many observations and reports posted throughout the interwebz.

To state and single out one "meta" as the whinners who caused Wyrd to make this change is an inaccurate statement and contrary to the facts. People whine about models and characters from all "metas" all the time. As Justin further explains in this very thread, changes are only made to cards in extreme cases. This was one of those, not because of whinning but simply because Levi mechanically had access to something above and beyond what other masters not only in the same faction had access to but above and beyond what other masters and other factions had access to. This concept has always been a pillar of Malifauxs design (as far as I can tell) and it only became evident after 1000s of games that Levi was a smidge too good and broke this design philosophy. I imagine it's why he didn't loose channel but rather rchannel was reduced on its effectiveness to be in line with other masters who mechanically have access to similar abilities.

  14. This is great news. I appreciate the hard work and dedication the company continuously puts into their product. A great outcome of this is that I hope to see more Levi on the table now. A lot of people have steered away from him unless playing at tournaments because he was so strong. He still has a very strong play, and is up at the top of the power of masters but is def more in line with other 'heavy hitting' masters now.

Thematically, I am happy to see he hasn't changed much and still see him being out on the table deleting a lot of models (now albeit ones that are already injured or weaker models more often).

This newly reincarnated version of Levi looks to be right on the mark!
