  1. Great suggestion! I'll look into those. At the moment for washes I've been using either just Reaper Black Wash (most things I just use this, often with a bit of the base colour to tint it a bit - so 3 parts black wash 1 part colour) or custom washes (this I do for flesh) which means taking the base colour, darkening it, watering it down with water that has a tiny drop of dishsoap in it (so I fill my rinse cup with water and add a drop of dish soap then use that to water down my 'wash'). I have read that GW washes are da-bomb so on your additional recommendation I'll go searching for a few!
  2. Malifaux marked my first effort to actually paint miniatures (instead of just base coating and calling it a day. I shudder now to look back at what I used to think was a passable paint job!). Below are my first three finished miniatures. Faces are a real challenge at this point. Taelor's was the first attempted and it turned out awful, Gun Vik was next and I just used flesh tone shading to 'pretend' she had eyes and Johan was the latest which I think turned out alright (all the gory details are visible in the picture but as long as you don't get THIS close his eyes look good) and the secret was using a Pin instead of a brush. The Group: Taelor Johan Gun-Vik
  3. Note that I haven't played Viks yet, but have them and am painting at the moment. I often see recommendations to use the Freikorps Librarian as the model has a healing ability which helps offset the Viks fragility... Also, if you don't like the Viks themselves have you considered porting over to Hamelin proper or maybe Von Schill?
  4. I'm already in the process of Colette in Wonderland (fiance is helping with some conversionary aspects, little bits here and there, as she's a jeweler and has the fine motor skills and I'm lible to explode the miniatures). Thinking about the crew got me to thinking - movies/tv's/games and popular media themes are the 'obvious' fare and a really cool and unique approach might be to try and use a Crew to convey an abstract concept (as I was thinking of Colette at the time, Music, came to mind). Skies the limit! Anyway, I think this is getting divergent from the original topic (given that this idea is *nothing* like Warmachine 'thematics'). As an on topic note: I agree that there should not be a mechanical bonus for any kind of 'theme list'. Not only can it cause the diversity of crews to diminish (more) but offering up kickers for using more restrictive options, but it also screams of 'lazy balancing'... why not just, improve the models that don't see play in a way that makes them viable again?
  5. Absolutely, I hadn't though of the practical business reasons but I agree. I think as a fundamental rule you must must must start with Wyrd miniatures. Further, your Colette still must maintain enough resemblance to be recognized as Colette (such that she would, and is, played as Colette). As far as I am concerned, anyone who has 'Zombie-fied' a crew is creating a Theme Crew (I think I've seen some 'Undead Guild' crews around somewhere).
  6. On 'Actually thematic theme lists' -- the important thing to take away from L5R theme decks is the utter lack of restrictions. The only requirement on part of the designer is to convey to viewers (judges in particular) the theme they are going for. Be that apparent by merely looking at the table (the Iron Chef example) or that it requires reading a short story (as is often the case, that is the most common route players take). Some even go so far as to play the deck thematically (whatever that means! ) For Malifaux, it's a miniatures game so the possibilities expand quickly. Some theme deck builders make proxy cards (identical abilities but changing flavour, images and titles of cards) to better establish the theme - in a miniatures game that's an even more open option (conversions anyone?). The absolute best part about this is that, since conversions make thematic tweaking easier on a model by model basis, it's entirely reasonable to expect thematic crews to also be built at a competitive level. In L5R often making a theme deck means not competing with it. In Malifaux, the Colette in Wonderland Crew could absolutely be brought into the tournament proper and even take the day! (C'mon, Cassandra is totally the White Rabbit, look at how she moves! Just convert a tiny bit for her to have a big pocket watch instead of the sabre!). The challenge being to create a Crew that both idolizes your chosen theme and also stays true to Malifaux and the Crew itself in some manner. I think there's an interesting competition based in this idea, because I know there's lots of talented artists and players on these boards and into this game. Maybe the next Master's or World's equivalent event should try to work in a similar 'Theme-Crew' sub competition. Perhaps we could test-drive the idea on an 'images of your crew' basis as a forum competition.
  7. Forgive me for being out of touch with the 'common opinion' amongst miniatures gamers (I'm new to this scene with Malifaux!) but when I read the title of this thread (knowing nothing of Warmachines except that the models are ick!) I got excited... when I read the content I was disappointed. Some context: I play L5R (CCG) and one of the coolest (I think there's a lot of 'coolest' things the game offers, but I digress) things about L5R tournaments is the side competitions. In addition to a great prize for winning the day, there's an honour competition (usually a donation drive) that has a comparable story prize (L5R is story driven, so 'big prizes' are always story prizes) to the tourney winner and, the relevant bit, there's always some sort of 'creativity contest'. These vary from costume contests to alternate formats of playing the game - the most awesome one being the Theme Deck competition. Theme Decks are above and beyond normal decks on several levels, but are fundamentally playable by the game's rules (and indeed, a requirement of the contest is that you actually do play the deck - not all events require entry into the main event with it, but at least at a side event table play 1 match to show your theme deck in action..) To make a theme deck you make a standard deck by normal rules, include a short write up explaining your 'theme' and how each card fits into it. 90% of players take this to extreme limits, writing short stories that include the names of all cards, making decks that are themed after movies and even going so far as to make props for playing the deck (one notably awesome theme deck was an "Iron Chef" zombie deck and they had little 'sushi zombie' tokens and chopsticks and a bento box they made specifically to organize their play area. Then the list that explained the purpose of each card was.... a menu!) Some theme decks are 'in setting' and others (like the Iron Chef deck) are not. Anyway, long story short - that's the kind of Theme List I thought this thread was getting at... not (what seems like) a way to reward people for artificially restricting their options (as an alternative to re-balancing bad models)... A Theme List is a Crew themed after say, Alice in Wonderland, where you go through great pains to paint and convert models to reflect the various characters in the book such that when you get it to the table and play it the Crew almost embodies the story (Obvious choice here is Seamus for he is the Mad Hatter, with a Belle done up like Alice and so on - but even more wild would be taking the Showgirls and doing them up Alice-style with Colette as either Alice or the Queen of Hearts and the rest of the Crew following suit (HA!))
  8. I am attracted to the madness that is Colette. The non-trivial, unique playstyle is something that really appeals to me, and that was a happy accident. I fell in love with the miniature range first, and was delightfully pleased when I came to discover what she could do. Secondarily, my fiance has latched onto Raspy and so as a household we're Arcanists (she loves her style, is not a big fan of the goggles, but typically enjoys casters, enjoys blowing things up and loves ice themes. A trifecta if ever there was one).
  9. Double awesome! Great job on the Viks. And good to know clix could be useful for basing, I'm going to keep an eye on my local shops, occasionally they try to offload some older ones on the cheap - never thought of using them (or other mini's) as Salvage!
  10. Great looking mini! Side question: What is OSL?
  11. Ok, well I'm going to stick to Coryphee and Doves for now (in addition to the box) before getting my feet wet with Kaeris. Sexy model though, love them wings Are there any opponents or play styles I should watch out for with Colette?
  12. What are your thoughts on Kaeris and Colette? Pull My Finger seems to indicate that there's a strong synergy, but it centers on Disappearing Act tricks and (well having not yet played, and definitely not played enough to know) that doesn't seem a reliable enough maneouver to justify the mixing. On the other hand, Kaeris gives you field control that can definitely supplement your ability to control your own positioning.
  13. Hi, My name is Jessey, I just started painting miniatures and I'm already an addict. It began years ago with random mini's purchased for running various table top RPGs. I always like to have a cool, custom dude for my hero. Back then it was just base coating really, no washes, no highlights not even sealer. Touch ups here and there where the paint was nicked.. Then I got Super Dungeon Explore (the mini's are so CUTE!) and at the time Reaper had a sale on paints, so I picked up a custom paint kit (56 paints) for a great deal... One mini later, painted using actual techniques, and I found myself searching for an excuse to paint miniatures... Enter Malifaux, I've now got Colette and the Viks. Cleaned up and primed a couple and am starting to work on 4 mini's at a time.. (up from slowly finishing 1 in 2 weeks a month ago).... I'm an addict, and I don't want to quit.
  14. Wow on that article recommendation, I'm going to put it in the first post so any new Collette players who stumble upon this thread will get linked there post-haste! Why? Do tell, do tell!
