  1. @Hawkoon - love your "Lady in Red" @LinenMusician - impressive base, each time I see it, makes me want to paint this model @TimH - nice selection of different colors used on these @Gheist - very nice clean paintjob on these Nice even 100 soulstones in October for me I've been painting more of the Nexus keyword.
  2. 43ss with these additions: The small ice pillars on Euri's base are magnetized and I use them to remember about the rune tokens
  3. I've already painted these two guys for 10ss to start October on an icy note. Next in line - Euri2 and some Botanists
  4. 56 soulstones in total - sorry for late reply here as I forgot to put pics of last two minis painted in September
  5. Wow, that is surprising. I've had minis basecoated this way for a couple of years now and observed no such thing. I'd try @Shock & Awe's method first. If that doesn't work, maybe a quick extra layer if the medium on top?
  6. This month has been a busy busy one for me but I did manage to slap some paint on a few models (33 soulstones at this point). Great to see so many great minis here! @TimH - now I wish I'd kept the human on the base of my Bandersnatch - this looks soo cool! @LinenMusician - very good stony monument look there. Nice that you kept it consistent on all elements. @OctaBit - love the aesthetics and colors on the non-Malifaux part of your stuff And the blue on the robe looks wonderful. @Shock & Awe - interesting color choices on the Dino, they work really well, especially how the light green ties it with the base. @Moinetbeard - the flowery dress and vivid colors are just phenomenal and suit this model perfectly. @Kogan Style - excellent color choices and base work on the Nexus kids! @DemiMurgos - wonderful paintjobs there, super smooth highlights @Trimasel - I really like the dark colors and limited palette, makes them look more menacing As for the big questions... 1 - when you first build your mini and start thinking about how to paint it, do you have a process for determining how you'll approach it? What do you use for inspiration there? I typically have my minis assembled/primed next to me and I like to conceptualize / brainstorm ideas during the day (I mostly WFH). Often times I find myself doing that even while working out (e.g. running in the forest). Then I start painting with a very general idea in my mind and adjust as I paint. 2 - when you did hit the inevitable burn out, what things do you use to get reinspired to paint? First off - it's perfectly OK to experience it and no one should feel bad about it! I hop on PS5 for a couple of days/binge watch some TV series / read a book. In general - do something else that is fun but not necessarily hobby-related. If that doesn't help immediately, I try to paint something completely different to what I'm normally working on. And also - good idea to paint something smaller, easier so that you immediately get a sense of accomplishment.
  7. Great topic for this month, I will write up more later , for now just a quick WIP shot of what I'm starting the month with:
  8. So much great stuff, seems like summer has been a good period for you guys to paint Phew, just realized I haven't submitted pics of my finished models for August here:
  9. Soo, a chill month. Well, I will be out for most of it anyway so would need to really roll up my sleeves and slap some paint on plastic to avoid a mulligan. This is my tentative plan for now:
  10. @Hawkoon - excellent smooth highlights on these, really neat paintjob and blood splatters are well placed, not overdone. @Caedrus - excellent work on all, Princess has to be my favorite here, you've done justice to the grumpy cat expression @Brushgit - that Copycat is just awesome, all the colors come together nicely! @TimH - once again, very nice, bright colors and the Cyclops look great. Purple and blue aren't the easiest colors to put together on the same minis but you've managed to do that very well. @DemiMurgos - the freehand on Bunraku is simply stunning! One more update from me that brings me to a total of 131 soulstones.
  11. @Moinetbeard - very nice balance of colors with copper armor and bright marble. I really like this model Excellent work on the Nexus kiddos too - they do look almost like normal kids but when you look closer they immediately strike as disturbing - just like they should! Especially the girl in turquoise dress - these teeth are just perfect here. I also like the vivid shades of green on the plants. I will be painting these sometime in September. The material they're made of is completely different and it certainly requires a slightly different approach. I plan to paint the big plants using torn pieces of sponge and stipple some textured greens/browns on them. And I agree - the Gremlin one is ridiculously fun @DemiMurgos - excellent, smooth highlights on Bill. This mini has always struck me as somewhat static but you've done really great job here that actually enhances the menacing aspect of his pose. @Kogan Style - purple turned out great, works perfectly with pale skin. Daevas have always been among my absolute favorites, hopefully one day someone commisions these from me I'm up to 98 soulstones this month with these additions (more to come before end of month I hope ). Later today I will be streaming on https://www.twitch.tv/playwyrd and painting Titania the Autumn queen (21 CET / 1500 EDT) - feel free to pop in and say hi I'll also be doing a recap of first GG3 tourney in Poland.
  12. Hello everyone Freat to see some nice activity in the thread already! Beginning with the monthly focus - here's a look at my photo setup: Nice and simple - just a printed page without any lamps. In order to optimize, I take these pics on the balcony during daylight, when the sunlight isn't too strong. I use iPhone 13 as my default device and don't edit pictures afterwards. @Hawkoon - I still haven't made up my mind. I planned to paint my Pandy2 with reds mainly but I really like this combination of purple and green This Dorian looks absolutely amazin! @LinenMusician - love the monochrome on Corvis, makes him look more menacing. @Moinetbeard - I will be painting Cadmus keyword after the summer and will definitely be taking a lot of inspiration from your work. @wobbly_goggy - love the blue flame, subtle and nicely matched with the color scheme. I'm currently at 73 soulstones this month and plan to add much more before the end of month `` More pics on on IG https://www.instagram.com/what.the.faux/
  13. I will continue with the vermin this month Let's see how much I'm able to do in July. I will also paint new Dreamer (actually x2 as I'm painting one for a buddy too). As for pics - will write more once I'm taking some to show my setup.
  14. Whew, another month flew by! Wasn't too good for me in terms of numbers as I was pretty busy at work. Still, got plenty of stuff prepped and I'm ready to do much more in July. In total I ifnished August with 29 soulstones worth of painting @Hawkoon - love the new Pandy and classic color scheme. I'm still in two minds whether to paint mine like that or go with intense red. Now I'm leaning towards "classic" as I can see it looks really cool! @TimH - really cool (pun intended) color scheme, this deep shade of purple in the recesses brings it all together nicely. The greenish shade on Bultingin's fur works really well with purple trousers too! @Caedrus - cool stuff, would love to see some close-ups but can already tell the Cat is amazing @DemiMurgos - very elegant, clean paintjob and the freehand looks great @wobbly_goggy - another months filled with awesome contributions. Miss model is my favorite as that shade of orange works so well with this limited palette @Gheist - quite the crew you got there! That proxy model is ridiculously good and the dark metallics on Freikorps look great. @Cats Laughing - haven't seen many of new Asami models painted and I like the bright colors you've used @Moinetbeard - I have two Nexus boxes set aside for a commisison I will be working on in September. Looking at your pics, I feel like opening them now - great stuff! @LinenMusician - nice and clean paintjobs all around @Diddick - great paintjob on these nasty ones, the skin looks amazing. I've tried using black background for pics but the effects were terrible, would love to get tome tips and tricks from you!
  15. Probably a good idea to post some pics as we're almost at a mid-month point In June I will be working on some of the new releases as well as the Plague keyword. No idea which comes first, I'll just go with the flow. As for the process, I have half of the desk for hobby, half for work (laptop + second monitor). When I work from home (which is ~70% of time these days) I typically spend some time during the day looking at the minis, holding them, conceptualizing until I have a rough idea of where I want to go color-wise. After that it's just "go with the flow" In the meanwhile I've painted these two little fellows for 7 soulstones - was asked to do a bone/sepia color scheme here and turned out better than I had expected
  16. Wow, so much great stuff, where did May go? My apologies for much delay on my side here. 42 soulstones and an overview of shat I painted
  17. Sorry for coming a bit late to the game this month, was ill for a few days... These are some of the minis I'll be working on now: As for tips and tricks. 1. I use Revell Contacta Professional glue. It features a needle for precise application and has thick consistency. The best thing is that it actually slightly melts the plastic. I use it in layers and spread it evenly on surfaces to mask those nasty gaps left after the assembly. Works like magic, especially on larger surfaces like coats. 2. Basing: - when pinning model to the base you can make your life easier by adding a drop of paint to the pins to mark perfect spots for pins in the base. - milliput/Green Stuff is great when a model doesn't fit well on the base - such as this Miner here. I just add a bit of the putty to the sides, mark when the pins are when the putty is soft, and then later glue it in place with superglue - another neat trick is that when you want a mini glued on a nice resin made base and it doesn't fit well, you can layer some of the putty on the base. Some quick work with sculpting tools and in the end the model will look as is the base was custom made to fit it These are some modelling tips from me, will add more if I can thing of anything else.
  18. @Hobby Wyrd - making very good progress here and for the first ever use of contrast paints - the effect is excellent! @wobbly_goggy - fire looks amazing and nicely contrasts with cold colors of clothes. Nice productivity this month! Neat paintjob on the little Dreamer, Miss Anne, and Rami too! I really like these old M1E sculpts @Brushgit - as always, impressive use limited palette. The smoothness of highlights never ceases to impress me! @feagaur - feeling jealous about the chance to paint with your kid! Though I don't want to share my precioussss hobby stuff as I would never get it back! @Gheist - this looks like one happy family Makes me want to paint Nexus - maybe one day... @Jetboy69 - I can respect painting something just because you like the model Though Titania has a number of amazing minis in the keyword too. @TimH - hope the hand heals fast and you get back to happy painting in no time! Not backing the Kingdom Death Kickstarter is one of the few hobby regrets I still hold. @Moinetbeard - love the vivid colors you've used. Blood splatter really stands out ! As for gadgets - I've recently bought... a brush rinser. Seems excessive and not really necessary but boy it gets the job done! You can see more here: I've painted one more effigy - just a very quick paintjob to get it on the table. That brings me to a total of 8 soulstones + this "mini" (not sure how many soulstones this large scale model counts for?)
  19. Love the theme! I use a number of gadgets and will be sharing them over my next entries this month. Starting with magnetic miniature holder. This is a sample I got from a buddy running a successful Kickstarter (the same one who designed magnetic A-Case for transporting minis). It features 5 interchangeable tops and I typically have a mini on each. Helps a lot as I have full access from all angles of minis/base. And since I magnetize all my bases anyway, it's a win-win solution for me. As for my pledge, I will be starting April with Iconic Sonnia model. I will be working on her over the stream later today (3 pm EDT / 9pm CET / 8pm UK). And in the meanwhile I slapped some paint on this classic M1E Carrion Effigy for quick 4 soulstones. @OctaBit - thanks for the Paint Puck tip, I need to give it a go
  20. @Stranglelove now that's a major update, great job all around and the addition of toxic green works very well @Kogan Style - great work, the paintjob on Calypso makes me think of Warmachine jacks - you really made it look fully 3D and the weathering is "spot on" @Moinetbeard - the base works so well, adds a lot of dynamism to this already dynamic model. Dark colors work very well too, I'd maybe only consider adding glowy eyes/some other bright spot. @wobbly_goggy - for a quick paintjob this looks really good @Gheist - the bright colors are really striking and I really like this vibrant vibe you have in the crew @Caedrus - wow, painting so many minis using a similar effect my be really heavy on the brain but you've made it work very well @feagaur - this is all about consistency and making sure you allocate some time on regular basis to the hobby and your pic shows that the effort pays off @Spitfire - love the Hag-lady, what company is that? @Trimasel - great incorporation of bright colors into dark color schemes @OctaBit - again, consistency brings quality and these are a good example @Strangely Brown - great looking crew, love the coherent approach to colors @Hawkoon - some amazing bases you got there! @Cats Laughing - nice work on the Jorogumo with such vivid colors! @muraki - nice proxies and lovely colors I know it's April already but wanted to share two final minis painted back in March - Tara and Karina, bringing me to a total of 93 soulstones
  21. The mood captured with muted tones and subtle addition of dry pigment is spot on!
  22. @Spitfire - this is one of my favorite minis from the whole range. I really like your coherent approach to highlighting technique on both the fabric and the skin. Lovely work on the base - it actually looks like a mini diorama now @wobbly_goggy - well done on keeping at it, painting a whole faction is all about consistency. Now onto other factions @Diddick - bloody disgusting... and I love it! @Brushgit - amazing result for such a quick paintjob, well balanced tones and great, subtle color scheme. @TimH - you will soon have a fully fledged colorful mutant zoo. Again - different color scheme and everything works well. @LinenMusician - very nice mix of different shades of brown and grey, they look like they would blend in perfectly with their natural environment. And the kitty is just purrfect A quick update from me - still keeping at the Obliteration Keyword with three Void Hunters and the Nothing Beast. And for something slightly different - proxy for Professor Von Schtook Stargazer This brings me to a total of 73 soulstones, let's see if I can make it to 100 this month.
  23. @Hawkoon - really good work with muted colors. The light purple touches worked out really well and the quality of your brushwork is truly exceptional. @TimH - you've consistently demonstrated the ability to stick to a coherent color scheme across the whole army while adding well chosen unit varieties and these crawlers are no exception. @LinenMusician - very nice brushwork. I'd suggest adding small tufts of static grass for a bit more variety on the bases. @wobbly_goggy - again, consistency and excellent quality of work on the greenskins For March I'm continuing with the Obliteration keyword. The scion (and part of Aionus) was painted over a painting stream last week. Next week I will most likely work on the Nothing Beast. So far I'm looking at 28 soulstones I am tempted to slightly tweak and ad depth to the "cloud" effects on Aionus...
  24. @Brushgit - again, fantastic work on this model, the ghostly effect transitions so well into the "material" part of the model @Gheist - very nice and clean paintjob and I love the vivid, crazy colors, really like the base too! @Trimasel - I'm a big fan of your vassal videos, nice to see you here too. Skin on Aionus looks great - I will also be painting this model in March, such an amazing scultp. @TimH - again, love the way red works with pale blue and even more impressive on such a huge model. As for my pledge, I've started with one simple 4ss mini - Void Wretch. I was aiming for a balance between Cthulhu vibe and bright additions. In the end I overbalanced slightly towards the latter but looks OK I guess Now for the bases - I tend to use Milliput for making rocky foundations and adding some extra elevation (and weight) to the minis. I also use resin bases that a lot and pin my minis + add magnets to the bottom. And speaking of magnets, I want to make a big recommendation (hope OK from the admin side? ). My buddy is running a Kickstarter campaign with 3D printed magnetic grips with exchangeable heads. Once you have the base magnetized you just put it on the grip head and it stays there for as long as needed. No blue tack, no extra drilling, simple and effective. The grip is very well designed and comfortable to use (see below with a Malifaux example). 4 more days to go in the KS, price is really affordable - link here
