  1. It's a great question about an RPG. Although, do we have much info regarding what the 'ordinary person' is doing in the Malifaux world? (have to confess I haven't read most of the fluff - it's on my own to-do list). That's where I see the RPG living - in the space between these fantastic battles with the master and their gangs.
  2. Well I've tweeted again to try and get into week 3.... Will a $10 bill stapled to the tweet help?
  3. Doh I missed out - still some very good entries, so I can't be too upset :-) Ooh - how come the results are hidden this week?
  4. Surely as long as their methods are consistent, it proves that Wyrd is growing?
  5. What is Puppet Wars? Is this Wyrd's 'Bloodbowl' attempt - a way to get non-wargamers into the hobby? ooh also - if PW is a boardgame of sorts, is there a recommended age to it? Will the mini's be pre-painted? What's the scale of them? (this may already be known I guess)
  6. But still, it's an indicator of Wyrd's progression.
  7. Just wondered if anyone had heard of this or played it yet? It's a relatively new game from Black Scorpion - similar to Bloodbowl / Necromunda in that you create a crew and it 'grows' with success. It Pirate themed, and written by Gav Thorpe (which might explain the Necromunda similaraties?) - I've got the rulebook and it seems simple and straightforward. Weblink is here: http://www.blackscorpionminiatures.com/pages.php?page=cutlass
  8. This is a really interesting thread - let me give you my own background into minature-dom (is that a word? can it be?) I stumbled onto Space Hulk board game which was sold in a local toy shop. In it there was a little leaflet about all the GW range. That led me to WHFB, then onto Bloodbowl, Necromunda and GorkaMorka (should have been obvious to me by then that I was a fan of skirmish games...although I loved the 'growing' nature of those games). And that was it for me - I was never aware of any other companies, or gaming systems out there, so I loyally bought my White Dwarf, pretty much every single army book ever released, some models, but never actually played a game - guess I'm more of a collector then gamer. Anyway that brief background leads me onto a few points: 1) Market leaders can and are 'overthrown' without necessarily collapsing. In the UK, look at the supermarkets - Sainsbury used to be the market leader by miles, now it can only just make out the dust thrown up by the behemoth that is Tesco as it races off into the distance. Is this likely to happen to GW? Not in the near future, but I bet they thought the Roman empire (or British, Persian etc) would fall either. 2) Wyrd books. This is where I have an issue with Wyrd. I have the little rules manual - fantastic value and all the rules in one place - however, where's the fluff? I shouldn't have to buy the preceding two books just to work out what is going on and who these models are. Imagine if GW said "right, here's version 8 of WHFB, but you really need to buy all previous 7 versions too". Personally, they should release the fluff seperately (even for free?) as it doesn't change, it gets continued. So unlike GW where the fluff does sometimes get re-written, if I understand Malifaux correctly, the story is continued through the books. 3) Website - no offence guys but the website is awful (the forum however is great). Why no brief look at the armies and masters here? Why no 'stores locator'? If people have somehow stumbled onto this website, reward them by actually giving them some info. Maybe some videos so you can see Malifaux in action - some of the Youtube ones are fine, but some professionally shot and thought out vids would be great
  9. Thanks for the feedback. Lilith and her brood are on their way to me - just need to work out how to assemble and paint them! Once I've got comfortable with them, I'll probably look to Zoirada or Pandora next.
  10. Ok, so imagine someone has never ever painted a model. Anyone give me a quick walkthrough on painting and assembling Lilith's crew? It's probably easiest for me to get GW paints, if that helps at all?
  11. Ok, so imagine someone has never ever painted a model. Anyone give me a quick walkthrough on painting and assembling Lilith's crew? It's probably easiest for me to get GW paints, if that helps at all?
  12. I've gone for Lilith, with a view to getting Zoirada as as second crew later on :-)
  13. Maybe we should get together and write it ;-) I'd see it like saying in D&D "Sorry, you all have to be the same alignment". Or "Sorry, if one player is an elf, no-one can be a Dwarf"! Give us freedom!! (Cue Braveheart speech)
  14. Ok, so I picked up the rulebook and was inititally drawn to Lilith and the Neverborn. Apparently it's good for a new player to pick a force that can be used well with a couple of masters, so you can get a different playstyle using the different masters (if that makes any sense). So Lilith led me to the rest of the Neverborn, and OMG they look and sound awesome. They also, aside from Lilith, sound like they are fairly challenging to play, with all of the masters having 'unusual' playstyles. I particularly like the sound of the Dreamer, and also Pandora - do either of these use Lilith's forces well? I gather Pandora can be used with just about anything, although Dreamer needs Nightmares. So I guess Lilith & Pandora would be a better match? Do either of these use Candy & Baby Kane well? There's something about creepy murderous kids that appeals to me. Which way's the assylum?
  15. Maelstrom are in central london aren't they? That's even further for me then Leisure Games in Finchley. I was just wondering if there's a stockist list where I might be able to track some stuff down
  16. Does anyone have a list of stockists for Malifaux products in the UK? I know of one shop that sells them, but was wondering if there's anywhere nearer to me. I live in Middlesex if that helps
  17. Is there any way to get these Chronicles delivered to my Kindle?
  18. Aww but Pandora looks so good too..... Life's full of tough choices....
  19. Ok, I think the Neverborn are calling to me (which is worrying in itself...) Step forward: Lilith (and possibly the Dreamer a bit later on)
  20. If it's model cost you are worried about, and you are only playing friendly games, can't you just proxy them? It'll let you use the master's 'properly' and also give you a chance to make sure you like the playstyle before shelling out for more models.
  21. Exactly, there are decent ways to handle most things in an RPG - if you're careful. I also don't mind the secretly evil NPC boss, as long as the party have a way to figure this out before the great crime, and turn the tables on the boss. And I love the idea about the evil character, but that's the point I was sort of making (badly) - it can be done, but not long term. Either you need redemption (ala Lando in Star Wars), or the character becomes the 'big bad NPC' (Willow for a little bit in Buffy? I'm sure there's a better example) Anyway, getting back on topic, this is the point I was trying to make. If Wyrd release an RPG (please, please, pretty please, with a neverborn on top) then let us create whoever and whatever we want. Leave it up to the gamers to decide what's possible in our own gaming groups. If we want to change cannon slightly so that we have a neverborn has a chip in his head and can only hurt other neverborns, and therefore becomes a fully fledged party member (I really gotta stop watching Buffy....) then let us do it! Let us create a party of Neverborn who pillage loot and destroy. Let us create a party of Ortega's if we want. Let us create a ragtag assembly of different factions and races and let us explore the Malifaux world!
  22. I agree it can be done, just not something I would enjoy - unless maybe there's a chance for redemption and convertion of the 'evil' member. Could work as a one-shot I guess. The other thing I don't particularly enjoy is if you work for an NPC who turns out to be evil, and without realising you destroy a whole town. If there's no chance to realise the bigger picture, stop the destruction and turn the plan on the NPC, then it's not fun for me.
  23. Thanks for that. Shame they took all the fluff out, that's one thing that I'm finding hard to understand as a newbie to the Malifaux world. But I don't really want to spend £40 on the first two books just for fluff....hmm
  24. Hi all, I have just received the Malifaux Rules Manual, and now I hear stuff about Rising Powers. I was under the impression that the rules manual is the latest version of the rules - do I need to get Rising Powers as well?
  25. I'm new to Malifaux (love what I'm seeign so far though). To be honest, I'd love a TT RPG, but I'd have one caveat. Let the GM and Players decide on party composition. Sure I can't think of a way for a Neverborn to join a party of humans, without it ending badly, but if someone can justify it to their gaming group, then why should a games designer stop them? Give us the ability to make Neverborns, or Arcanists, or Guild (maybe that can be similar to Race in most RPG's and have an impact on Stats?). Put fluff in there about how it is unlikely that Neverborn would work with non-neverborn, but leave it up to the group to decide. Personally I would have a problem with the "they are secretly working against the party's goals" (although that could work with an NPC who is not what they seem), but other's might like this aspect of it. The real challenge for the RPG, and it's the same one that Iron Kingdom faces (if PP ever get round to re-writing it!!) - how to make it different enough to the minature game. This is why it's important that the social and 'exploration', (and crafting?) side of the game world is explored, not just the combat
