  1. You mean that the game should have been designed so that you only ever need one master and another 5-10 models and that's it? Never mind that getting a second master and another couple of models isn't exactly a huge investment, but a game where people only ever need to spend around $50 isn't exactly very good business sense (at least from what I can see; I'm not an economics kind of person). Something people have to remember is that as much as we love this game Wyrd is still a business and because it's a business the game requires some sort of way to get people to buy more models. Warhammer has you field large regiments of cheap troops, 40K has cheap transports that give your army a big advantage and small points per model, and warmachine has expensive metals and dual list tournaments. In Malifaux it's the ability to design your list after you discover your victory conditions (which is also good in game terms because it allows for more strategic planning with your army). Perhaps some people dislike the fact that you can't just buy a single starter and have an army that will rock any army out there, but Wyrd wouldn't exactly be in business for very long if there wasn't a reason to buy more models beyond the starter. Perhaps some people don't like it, but personally I enjoy the way Wyrd has done the game and the fact that it encourages people to buy more models and help Wyrd stay in business is a good thing (unless you don't like Malifaux).
  2. You were certainly acting like you knew the game well so forgive me for not realizing that you don't know that much about it. I will admit that in terms of price Warmachine and Malifaux are quite a bit different. After all, most Warmachine lists will end up costing around as much as an entire Malifaux faction, especially if you start eying infantry such as Bane Thralls. By the time you have two distinct lists in Warmachine you will have spent enough money to afford two entire factions of Malifaux, possibly with enough left over for some mercs. If you can afford a 50pt Warmachine list then you can afford an entire faction of Malifaux. Not quite. Having a different opinion is fine. I'm just saying that at this point it looks like you've started just arguing for argument's sake rather than believing that you can actually accomplish anything, and that would be trolling. You've brought up your point but you still have yet to show any proof other than claiming the hypothetical situation of one person buying Ophelia and another buying Hamlin and neither player are willing to ever buy anything else. You ignore the fact that the possibilities of bad match-ups is the drawback of having games where not every army is the exact same just to keep repeating the same thing. People have acknowledged that there are some bad match-ups in the game, which is something that all games have. My real question to you is what do you hope to accomplish? What is your goal in constantly bringing up Marcus and the hypothetical Ophelia vs Hamlin situation when everyone knows about it?
  3. I assure you that I agree that you disagreeing with me doesn't make you a troll (that and the fact that I also agree that I probably won't change my opinion on the game's balance are pretty much the main things I agree with you on). One of the definitions of an internet troll is a person who posts heavily divisive questions or argues heavily divisive topics judging from this topic and the topic about females in Malifaux I would have to say that it looks like you enjoy being contrary to everyone else. Not only that, but in many of your examples you point things out but ignore the rebuttal that lies with your example close enough that I can't honestly believe that you didn't see it. You use Warmachine as an example but then ignore the fact that you can have even worse match-ups there if people refuse to play anything other than one specific warcaster and list and you ignore the fact that just as you can mix and match models to warcasters in warmachine you can do that in Malifaux. You also ignore that there is an equivalent to Outcasts in Warmachine in terms of Mercenaries where you can have one list being Gorten and another being Talion Charter with no models in common. A common trick in trolling is to bring something forth that looks reasonable unless you're familiar with the topic, and that's what it seems like is happening here to me. Back on topic, I don't think owning every model in a faction would be a big help. There is generally crossover between models and often a player will prefer one over the other no matter what mission it is. To that end a person who owns every model in a faction won't really have much of an advantage over a person who owns maybe 20% of the faction because most of the models will likely never see the light of day. I mean, theoretically the person with more models has an advantage, but in practice it's not really true because everyone has their own preferences and will generally prefer to use certain models over other models. For example, if Lilith works against forces AB, Pandora works against CD, Zoraida works against BC, and the Dreamer works against DA, then if the player enjoys playing Lilith and Pandora more than Zoraida and the Dreamer then owning Zoraida and the Dreamer won't really help because the player will be sticking to Lilith and Pandora in those situations. Obviously it's a bit simplified, but in practice that's the kind of thing that happens.
  4. I think we can determine that JPRoth1980 will refuse to change his opinion no matter what anyone says so people should stop feeding the troll and just agree to disagree. He believes he's correct and I doubt anyone less than God could convince him otherwise.
  5. Every game has it's own ups and downs. If you play warmahordes and end up facing a Khador heavy jack army (or even just a good eIrusk list with a winter guard deathstar and a Devastator) using an eSkarre tier list and lose horribly then it's not the game's balance that's the problem. I've seen Hexris wipe out over half my army with his feat before; in warmahordes bad match-ups are nearly always fatal because the game doesn't want that much terrain and it's all about beating each other's heads in. In Malifaux bad match-ups don't seem that bad, at least from my very very limited view. Out of the three games I've played two of them were the Vik's box vs Rasputina's box set with me using the Viks. I got wiped out fairly badly both times, but in the first game I managed to tie despite being wiped off the board because I played the objectives. In my third game where not even a mitt full of queens and better could save me from my opponent's awesome luck I still consider it my win because my opponent forgot about my announced scheme (though truth be told if he had remembered it he could have stopped it, but I don't believe I'm required to remind him about my scheme if he doesn't ask). How many games can you get wiped off the board and still win? Perhaps there are more devastating match ups then what I have seen, but from my extremely limited experience you can generally mitigate those buy playing for victory points and denial rather than by trying to kill off the opponent's models. I would tell him that he was unlucky and picked the paper to his opponent's rock. It's one of the risks inherent in playing a game with models with unique rules where you can design your own force. What would you tell a guy who buys an eSkarre tier list when his standard opponent buys up a Karchev tier list? Pretty much all forces have some sort of weakness and if your opponent just so happens to have yours then it's your own bad luck. A couple hundred is exaggerating. If he spent another couple hundred then he'd probably have every outcast model in the game and still have some change left to buy some toys for Levi. As a wargamer he could probably figure out the more obvious weaknesses just by looking at the models (hell, I'm sure even a non-wargamer would suspect that gremlins are easy to kill and cheap). Other than that, mention that Hamlin really hoses gremlins and suggest that it might be worth it to get another Outcast master to deal with him. From what I know of the psychology of nerds most will just stick with the gremlins until they either figure out how to win against Hamlin or until they decide they need to expand their force in order to be able to deal with him. I mean, if you played 40K tyranids and decided to go 100% close combat with a pair of tyrants and max hormagaunts when mech is the best army (and mech is pretty much a hard counter to mass swarms like that) and you refused to play anything else because you only liked hormagaunts and hive tyrants with close combat only out of all the nids then it's your own fault. It's the game's duty to give every faction the tools it needs to win against any other faction, but it's not the game's fault if the player refuses to use the tools given to them.
  6. In terms of the money thing, I think of it like this: For $400 I can either get a 50pt warmachine force (which may or may not only be decent with one warcaster, and it also depends on which units you get as some 50pt forces can be a lot more expensive), be able to buy maybe 66% of a decent 1850pt 40k army, or be able to buy every Neverborn model from the warstore (up to and including Nekima and the BBShaman), pay the shipping to Canada, and still have enough left to to add in the new rulebook and pay taxes (13%) if my shipment gets caught by customs. Compared to other games Malifaux is incredibly cheap when you consider that you can buy an entire faction for equal or less than you'd pay for a standard force in other games (though it appears that Europeans pay significantly more for their pewter crack then those of us who live in North America). In terms of balance I don't really see any real problems. Someone complains about the fact that the game is designed for the players to have multiple masters and a fair few models at their disposal? I say look at other games. 40K is fairly balanced if you only look at 5th ed codexes plus DA and BT, but only really if you can afford to buy transports for you units at $40 a pop. And then often times you only get one of a weapon that you want several of per box, which makes things more difficult. You need money to assemble a reasonably good force. Then look at card games such as Magic. Is Magic balanced? I'd say it is, but if you want to be able to play it at top tier then you better be willing to dish out something like $80 for a set of four cards (more if what I've heard about the card prices going up since I've quit are true), and generally you're probably looking at another chunk of money to buy your sideboard. Personally I consider money to be a moot point in terms of balance with miniatures games. It's not like our models become obsolete every two years or that we need to purchase hundreds of dollars worth of packs to get the models we need for our army like how it is with games such as Magic (the smart ones trade for or specifically purchase the cards they need rather than getting packs). We're wargamers. Odds are that if we feel too cheap to buy a model we have something in our collections that's good enough to proxy it until we have the cash to buy it. If I wanted to use a convict gunslinger with my Outcasts and I lack the money then I'm pretty sure most of the people I play with wouldn't mind if I used a pistol wraith instead. Who here doesn't have any models from any other games that they can use in friendly games of Malifaux? The way I see it is that they have balanced written into the rules and that's enough for me. Wargaming isn't a cheap hobby as a whole, but if you can drop $200 and be able to play two or three vastly different forces then, well, that's pretty impressive in my honest opinion because in most games that would buy you a small force at best rather than a couple of decent sized forces.
  7. Hoffman. While requiring the mechanical brace to move around and stuff must suck, I'd want to be him just for the instinctual knowledge on building what are essentially robots while not having to be Ramos (I wouldn't like being Ramos).
  8. To be honest the game seems to be more along the lines that you play masters rather than factions. There are a lot of masters that are capable of taking units from other factions (Levi, Kirai, and Hoffman for example) so there's not a whole lot of reason to just confine yourself to a single faction. You want to play Levi? Why not also buy some Ressurectionist masters if you decide to play him with undead or Arcanist or Guild masters if you like to play him with constructs. Hamlin can take units such as Terror Tot Nephilim and Kade along with units from the other non-Outcast factions and if you have Hoffman then you might as well get Ramos too if you plan on using Arcanist constructs heavily in your crew. To me it seems like there's just so much inter-connectivity between the factions in the game due to certain masters that if you want to play those masters then you're handi-capping yourself unless you pretty much start a new faction (note: slight over exaggeration). I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but it is something that needs to be considered. Personally it's one of the things I find interesting about this game.
  9. So, something like a book of short stories or something? I know I'd want to read something like that. I have a shelf full of 40K and WHFB short story anthologies and I'd jump at the chance to do the same with Malifaux, especially considering that it, as a whole, has much more interesting characters than other miniatures games do. Personally I just want more short stories like the ones in Wyrd Chronicles. I love short stories as you can generally read a good story without needing the half a dozen hours of reading a full novel requires. Other than that, my question would be whether most of the factions are actually true factions. It seems to be that "factions" are generally just a group of people who are sometimes rather loosely associated (I get this feeling from Ressurectionists, Outcasts, and I have the feeling that it will be the same kind of thing with some NB casters such as the Dreamer) but generally share a lot of characteristics. Should factions be viewed generally as an organization or as people who seem to share similar goals and are grouped together even if some of them don't have much to do with the others? Or is it a bit of column A and a bit of column B?
  10. Rusty Alyce. I like the crazy ones. My other choices would be Kaeris, Lilith, a lilitu, or the Viks.
  11. Please don't remind me about assembly. I hated that course so much... It's such a pain to program in. Decoding it from binary into assembly is even worse. @Wodschow: That seems correct looking at the first book. What's the verdict on the Dreamer and Kirai? It doesn't say that the spirit has to be a minion and masters are still technically hired. It might not be a good idea to do so, but I don't really see any reason why it wouldn't work.
  12. Run Through is now 2 AP instead of 1 AP so they're slower now than when it was 1 AP. Bishop isn't really that slow, though. Sure he only have a Wk of 4, but he has a Cg of 7 and he only spends 1 AP to charge so he can walk 4" and then charge 7" so he technically moves faster than a Wk 5 model (though he's still overcosted).
  13. I was thinking more along the lines of the excel spreadsheet to be honest. That kind of thing is pretty awesome. It's entertaining to see people having more painted Malifaux models than I have painted 40K, W/M, Infinity, and Malifaux combined (though considering that I only started the latter three of those within the past year...). I'm really not a big painter.
  14. Dammit! I only have 119ss worth of models (24 for the Viks box, 35 for the Freikorps, 19 for Lilith's Brood, 12 for a pair of young nephs, 14 for lelu and lilitu, and 15 for my three ronin). There will be more coming... Also, I believe Rathnard wins the thread.
  15. I had expected that there would be an email address so I could attach the pictures rather than just writing the URL. Thank you for your assistance.
