My wife and I just started to play recently as well. And, similar to what you did, kept the games simple to start. I will say though, no matter how simple you make the game to determine a winner, always always use around the recommended amount of terrain. The first game we played we used almost no terrain. I was thinking it would make the game easier. But terrain makes a HUGE difference. Much bigger than I thought.
In any case, its good to see other couples picking this game up too. Its a lot of fun and once you start getting the turn/duel order down, it becomes a lot quicker to play.
one other tip - download some of rattys tokens/cards for reference, and http://tabletopgeeks.com/malifaux-downloads/ under the 'Reference Sheets,' download/print the 'Malifaux Full Reference (Rising Powers)' sheet. It lists all the charts I continuously looked up in the book while learning the game. The other reference sheets there are very helpful to have as well.
