  1. With the new errata of the bury mechanic I am not quite sure if the Soulstone Miner is still worth it. With my list previously being: Marcus Kaeris Jackalope Student of Conflict Gunsmith Night Terror x 3 Sillurid x 2 Soulstone Miner Waldegeis I ask all of you what do you think? Is the list still viable ? Should I switch the miner for another Waldgeist? Or another gunsmith/gunslinger? Or I could take out the Miner for a third silurid with 1ss going to waste.... OR I could drop the miner + jackalope for the slate ridge mauler... any help would be greatly appreciated.
  2. Yes the tournament director got an earful for the round. He admitted it wasn't a good idea looking back, but no one got too overly upset with him. He put on a great tourney and was just trying to introduce new things and get creative with the whole thing. He already said he is not doing that again this year... whew!
  3. I had my second game with Marcus today against the Viktoria's. My first game I will not get into too much detail, as it was last week.... I did win 8-6 getting my 8 VP in three turns (deliver a message, sabotage and power ritual). I definitely learned how fast the crew can be and Silurids with leap = amazing for deliver a message/sabotage! Anyway today we played a 35ss game at my house (meaning terrain was lame). My crew: Marcus, Kaeris, Student of Conflict, Soulstone Miner, Waldgeist, Gunsmith, Desperate Merc... 7ss Pool. I got slaughter, and took sabotage and kill protegee on Misaki. Opponents crew: Viktorias, Ronin x2, Lazarus, Freikorp Trapper, Misaki, Desperate merc... 2ss He got claim jump, and took stake a claim and breakthrough. Turn one, Kaeris + student moved behind a small section of ruins on the left flank. Desperate Merc, Gunsmith and Marcus moved up the middle behind a section of forest. Soulstone miner took defensive stance, overdrive and tunnel, withe Waldgeist moving up to touch the forest and cast uproot to push toward a small hill holding my opponents Trapper blocking him from seeing much. My opponent mainly moved up without any casting/effects with the trapper moving off the hill on my left flank with a ronin in front, viktoria's up the middle with the gun viki going into the forest, Laz and the merc moved up my left flank toward his claim jump, and misaki moved up the middle cautiously. Turn two - Student companioned Kaeris and used assist. Kaeris killed the ronin and hopped back in cover. His viktorias activated and killed my gunsmith and attempted to use his last AP to attack my waldgeist only to flip the black joker. My waldgeist then attacked his paired viktoria doing getting a neg flip and getting a double severe, then I got a weak damage on a double negative to kill the vik but he used a stone flipping moderate to ignore the damage. Laz killed my desperate merc. Marcus did a swift hit and run attack finishing off the wounded Vik and ran out of sight from anything else. Everything else kind of moved into position. Turn 3 - I unburied my Miner next to his gun viktoria and won initiative. I activated the Miner and after three attacks with the first inflicting severe I killed the viktoria while activating his trigger to gain a soulstone and still had an AP to re-tunnel. I don't remember how but his Ronin got too ansy (he said he was too nervous of that Kaeris would kill that one next activation) and charged my Waldgeist. The waldgeist survived and in turn did enough wounds to get the ronin to one wound. His Merc shot and did a few more wounds killing my waldgeist. Marcus charged and finished off the ronin and then ducked back around the forest toward my oppenents table edge going the "back way" to the sabotage piece (laz and desperate misaki were sitting on it). The trapper fired at Kaeris doing two wounds, Kaeris drew a card suffering another wound (good thing I got a 10 and nothing else really in my hand), and finished off the trapper using all of her AP (and used the 10 I drew to land the killing blow). Laz and Misaki moved back laz being about 4" from Marcus, Misaki 6" away who then attacked Marcus twice (after getting wind) burning a few of Marcus' soulstones. Turn four - Soulstone miner appeared and I won initiative again. He then attacked and killed Misaki gaining another stone in the process and reburied. Laz did some 4 wounds to marcus and Marcus did like 8 or 9 wounds to Laz... but really amounted to 5 or 6 with his patchwork armor. Kaeris + student just moved to support Marcus. Turn 5 - Miner popped up again with my opponent getting initiative and doing a two more wounds to Marcus... Marcus swung back killing Laz. Miner tagged sabotage and we called it game Final score 8-0 Marcus! Individual model thoughts: Marcus - is awesome! Wild heart is ridiculously handy for any situation. He is very underrated in his damage output. Kaeris - I was shocked at how decently easy it was to get off ignite + immolate on the same target. I used two stones with her though to kill the trapper... but from advice from Ukrocky I purposely saved two stones just for her. She is really annoying for opponents with the student allowing her to stay out of sight.... couple that with Marcus and his "drive-by's" is really nasty. Gunsmith - Didn't do anything for me this games, viks killed him too early. Soulstone Miner - MVP!!! Killing a viktoria + Misaki both times gaining a soulstone... He also got me 4 VP's (2 for announced sabotage, and two for announced kill protegee n Misaki)... He also got me 13 points toward slaughter. Overall, this so far is my favorite model . Waldgeist - Uproot worked really nice blocking some LOS, he also did most of the damage on the first viki. He is obviously durable for a 6ss model but I was pleasantly suprised at his damage output. I was lucky enough to get severe and moderate but 2/4/5 is not bad! Desperate Merc - Blah didn't do anything, oh well. I have taken them a few times with different masters sometimes they arent even worth their 2ss sometimes they more than are worth it. Overall: Yes I learned from Ukrocky that I played sabotage wrong with the Miner being Insignificant when he pops up... but I had another free turn and Kaeris was pretty close by also. I so far am having a BLAST with Marcus. I have used Rasputina, Hoffman, and Zoraida but so far Marcus is the most enjoyable (yes he is still my new toy but oh well). What did help this game is I won every initiative but turn 5 when it was pretty much over. Also when the soulstone miner hit the gun viki, I flipped a red joker on the attack, he flipped a black joker for defense. With my positive flip I did severe and 5 wounds while triggering a crow with the joker. I definitely had some luck go my way at the right times!
  4. Pictures from last year's Walpurgis! Inside the swag bag everyone got by participating before the first round! Not in the picture is the awesome campaign book. What the fate deck looked like (I still use it I love it!) Some of the game boards (all had their own special event attached [falling rocks, campsite... etc]) This is the tournament pic of my crew!
  5. This year I will be attending the second annual Walpurgis Malfaux tournament in Bellingham, Washington. Last year we had had 22 players show up from all along the coast (All the way from Portland, OR to Vancouver B.C.). This year we have opened it to 24 players and so far 18 have signed up and paid. Tournament rules: 40$ to enter with everyone getting a storied/narrative campaign book. A wooden eengraved token/counter set with 5 corpse/scrap counters and all the counters needed for every strategy/and scheme. Also a custom designed tournament fate deck with local artwork for the card backs and fronts. Last year everyone got a "spawn pool" for a custom scenario, and a model created by the tournament director featuring Tillinghast Beast (also used in a custom twisted version of the Shared Treasure Hunt strategy.) and tons of other raffle prizes. There are 6 rounds. Everyone picks one master to use for the weekend. Everyone picks a 50ss "pool" of models to use for the weekend that can be hired in the typical fashion before schemes. Rounds are anywhere from 25-45ss. You may only pick a scheme once for the entire weekend. Strategies are pre-decided each round (see the campaign story book). First three rounds are randomly matched, after that its by current ranking. Each round has a bonus objective that has an affect on your next match (not actual VP but last year was like a free 4" move on wagon supply if you got the special condition, or a one free interact). Their are custom trophies for first place, favorite opponent voted by players, and best painted. Also TONS of raffle prizes! Last year my results were: I took Rasputina, which REALLY hurt only being able to take schemes once. Most of the time I took one do-able scheme and extra SS. I took second (tied with two others) in voting for favorite opponent. Fourth in painted. And I WAS 3rd in overall VP going into Sunday (last two rounds), until I got my butt handed to me by a great Kirai player.. I do blame some of the loss on the fact that round players were NOT ALLOWED to use any soul stones unless it was for initiative, or abilities like the soulstone Miner's "Discard soulstone to get overdrive." That REALLY hurt me getting casts off oh man. The round being reconnoiter didn't help either with Raspy vs Resser crew. Haha yes I am still mildly bitter about that condition. After that plus me playing a bad game verse Nicodem and lost big again (no excuses, my opponent was great and played a great smart game) finished respectably middle of the pack. Overall the entire weekend was the most fun gaming I have ever had... OH and I also won a Hoffman box set in the raffle! This year I wanted something very different from Raspy and I wanted a master that could achieve most schemes... Last year with their only being me and one other Raspy players, and no one with Marcus... I decided to give Marcus some love this year. In order to help motivate me I wanted to post a blog on my Marcus adventure/progress and hopefully continue to get more help from people on the board. So far my 50ss pool looks like this (after much help from all of you!) Marcus Kaeris Jackalope Student of Conflict Soulstone Miner Gunsmith Waldgeist Sillurid x2 and Night Terror x3 Total = 50 on the dot I bought McTavish and I want to try the Slateridge Mauler as a possible replacements if I see enough out of them... not sure who I would get rid of though.
  6. AH you said tunneling thats what confused me, ok good to know though for future games! Thanks for all your help!
  7. My first turn action I (0) Overdrive, Defense Stance, Tunnel.... that's correct right? Ah good call on the sabotage mistakes though. Oh well at that point all that was left for my opponent was Lazarus on the other side of the table (who Marcus finished off that turn). So I don't feel too bad. I could have popped up, stood where I was, capped it sixth turn just fine. Lesson learned but I am just glad it didn't cost my opponent, I hate if I get something wrong and it would have changed the whole game. But jeeze, as long as I tunnel with my last action FOR SURE my melee master and defensive stance stays? I just want to make sure, it seems sort of over the top awesome.
  8. Just to make sure I did this right today with the Soulstone Miner... First turn Overdrive, Defensive stance, tunnel. 2nd Turn tunnel move in closing phase. 3rd turn pop up, kill a model, last action tunnel. 4th turn, pop up, kill a model, move once, tunnel.. 5th turn pop up (1) to sabotage, tunnel. 6th turn, not needed... With this whole time he never suffered two wounds from overdrive, always had defensive stance, and always had Melee Master (+2)??? I never cast or did any of those actions, save for the first turn... IF I did this right oh man he is awesome, in fact he also gained me two soulstones from his trigger!
  9. Just finished my first Marcus game post this list... and oh man! Soulstone Miner = Pure win!!! Marcus actually knowing he gets three buffs now = More Win!!! I will start a new blog post with short battle reports on my road to preparing for the tourney.
  10. New 50ss "pool" looks like this: Marcus Kaeris Jackalope Student of Conflict Gunsmith Night Terror x 3 Sillurid x 2 Soulstone Miner Waldegeist Total 5= 50 exactly.... What does everyone think of this, should I make room for another melee minion, sabertooth, Mauler? So far I have purchased: Marcus Kaeris - Just finished painting tonight. Jackalope Student - Up Next Gunsmith - Painted Night Terror blister Soulstone Miner/Silurids on order.
  11. Oh man thanks that is great news! In my game with him I thought two tomes meant two affects, that is amazingly awesome!
  12. A couple questions still regarding the soulstone miner: IF I put defensive stance on, and pop up two tuns later, do I still suffer the -2/-2 to wk/cg? Also I thought buried models still suffer from affects that were played before they bury that turn, so wouldn't the 2 wounds from overdrive still happen? Last, can Marcus' best way of achieving a hit and run be explained to me? I don't see how you get enough actions to achieve it while still doing more than a 1/2/4 dmg flip. (0) Wild heart with an additional tome = = Bear and Serpent. Charge from the serpent, hit once, walk away? That is 7" but I have heard people can get 10" away how? Thanks again for all your help, with only one game with him under my belt I still have a lot to learn.
  13. Thanks for the input guys. I wasn't thinking the molemen for defend me, but more to help reconnoiter. Either way... So with that drop the moleman x2 for a soulstone miner, and my remaining 7ss go with Waldegeist or Myranda? Is 3 Night terrors too much? Now with the soulstone miner, when does he pop up from tunneling? At the start of both players activation phase? or at the start of the Soulstone miner's activation phase?
  14. In April I will be participating in a two day Malifaux tournament featuring 24+ players from Vancouver BC to Portland, OR. This is the second year of the annual tourney and it's an absolute blast! The rules are one master for the entire weekend (additional Henchman are allowed), and a 50ss "pool" to pick from at the beginning of each match. The campaign is a storied campaign and all strategies are predetermined at the beginning of the first day, opponents are assigned first at random then by overall point rankings. Throughout the tourney you CAN NOT pick the same scheme twice. Last year games were 25ss, 30ss, 40ss, 35ss, 45ss, 30ss, 25ss. Because its a storied campaign (trying to track Dr. Tilinghast and his beast to find his secret soulstone vein) there are minor objectives each round that don't help towards your VP but give you a bonus in your next match (free + on a flip, or instead of a (2) interact your first one is (1), or an interact free). Last year half the field brought Sonnia, this year looks like about half are bringing Lillith. Whew.... With all that and me being a new Marcus player (I took Rasputina last year) I was hoping for some advice on what I should take for my 50ss. Last year there were not too many forests, but who knows this year. So far I was thinking: Marcus, Kaeris Student Gunsmith Sillurid x2 Mole x2 Night Terrorx3 With either Slateridge Mauler or another Sillurid +Desperate Merc for the last 7? Or something different altogether? Please any advice is a HUGE help.
  15. Kind of suprised there is not more talk of the raptor's other trigger.. (mask) do no damage, models controller puts the top 3 cards of their discard pile back to the top of their deck.... Seems you could hit yourself to get back that red joker, or 13 and not cause any models any wounds. I haven't used the Raptor yet, but I plan to soon. I was just reading up on them again and this stood out to me more. Does anyone else see this as a plus?
  16. Has anyone tried this combo yet? Any luck? Seems that for 7ss you get a 14" Rifle 1/2/3 shot with critical strike (plus built in ram), and can cast "Wrangle Critter" allowing beasts to make an immediate (1) action or charge. PLUS his damage flips receive + against any beasts and nightmares. Seems great if to work with Marcus' Feral or finishing off a model after Marcus whacks them with Primal Reaction (if you cant finish him). Seems worth it to me, or is a gunsmith really that much better at 6ss? I am very new with Marcus (not to Malifaux)nand still searching for ideas/combos. I will be using Marcus in an upcoming two day tournament.
  17. Your such an attention whore
  18. So how did you end up getting the final color on your reds? Did you just stick to the foundation with two wash layers? Or did you add more red in later. I like the way your reds look and I am hoping to copy or at least come close! Mine never turn out how I want
  19. No I just applied three different shades of blue "blending" in between each color. I use a black wash after the darkest blue is applied then go back over it in that blue. To help achieve the "ice effect" I pick out just some of the sharp points and corners with white. Thank you for your comments!
  20. Good summary for a n00b. But yes it was definitely an awesome time! I plan on writing up my battle rep soon.
  21. The rider was just a Necron Immortal chopped in half and added to a Chaos Murauder Horseman with the axe replaced with a Space Ork Axe. The blues I start with necron abyss, wash with back. Re-layer Necron Abyss. Then Enchanted Blue . Then I go Enchanted Blue mixed with Ice Blue. Then Ice Blue, Then Ice Blue with White. Top off the final touches with just white. All my mixes are just at 50:50 to keep it simple. All the models I listed and paint colors are from Games Workshop for people who didn't know. Thanks guys/girls for all of your feedback!
  22. Had an AMAZING tourney at my local game store which I shall post about later in the battle reports section. Anyhow I have always wanted to post some pictures of my crew but I don't have a camera.... as more people start posting pictures on our gaming site I should get a few more up here... Anyway CC always welcome as this is my first completely painted crew!
  23. Looking good... Where's the homecoming queen?
  24. A lot of good ideas... I am going to go with Rage on this one though. +1 to Rage for being honest
  25. K, thanks! Yeah proxying is allowed as long as you have a close "count as" model which is fully painted. The Snow Storm is an interesting idea for just taking out a moleman! I may try Snow Storm in my next friendly match...
