  1. Well if anyone made it past the absurdly long title welcome to my thread! Here's the rub gents: I want to get in actual games of Malifaux. Not just read breports and watch videos, get some actual games in. The problem here is that it's a 2 and a half hour drive in any direction to get a game in and with my work schedule that just isn't possible with any sort of frequency. So here's my idea. Would any of you, the community, be willing to grind through some games on the warmahordes vassal module with me? I can be honest with the fate deck if you can. I know there would be some difficulties involved but man would it help me out learning. I've been ghosting the forums for the better part of a year and I'm ready for the plunge. I apologize in advance if I'm creating a redundant thread but I'm desperate lol. I hope that anyone else facing the seclusion problem will utilize this thread as well. I appreciate your consideration Mali-peeps.
  2. So ladies and gentlemen this is going to be my motivation to paint more! What I will post here will largely be crap compared to the rest of the posts that I've perused here in. However I've noticed that receiving critique tends to motivate people in a good way whether its positive or negative commentation. So along with my Puppet Wars project stuff, which I took a break from this week due to illness, I'll be posting here and share with you all my journey in painting. Lets begin with my third completely painted (though not yet based!) model ever! Now I've partially painted some others, and subsequently stripped and attempted to repaint them, but I'm never really satisfied with my work. This guy is no exception, not entirely satisfied, but Im hoping after hes based and sealed to kill the shiny I'll be more happy with him. Anyhow here is my rendition of the Judge, let me know what you think, and ps he looks much better when not zoomed in but I can't seem to take a far off picture thats worth anything.
  3. @themurphyfella Thank you for the excellent suggestions sir! I hadn't even considered felt as the sliding hasnt been an issue due to the grit of the gesso but after theyre all sealed that will likely become an issue and I just happen to have some felt lying around so why not? Another great suggestion on the pastels I was kind of leaning in that direction already, my fiances an art major and shes been pushing me towards pastels since I started this thing but I was kinda meh about it. I suppose we'll just have to see how it goes. Thanks for the help on the google search too, I'll definately have to go check it out, though I do want to keep it irregular, more in resemblance of the patched together puppets than anything. As to identifying the benches. They've been primed white and I am going to do my best to paint them all up with a natural yet obviously fake wood tone and then for the masters tokens I am going to try source lighting from between the boards and the sides in their respective colors. Now I am as mentioned repeatedly an awful painter so well see how this goes. I just like the idea of when one of the benches is taken over by a particular entity it begins to glow with their own special brand of power. Will this come across in my painting? Probably not. Am I going to try? Heck yeah. Non claimed tokens will of course be left with just the wood tones and shadows between the boards.
  4. Well, a very very small update to the project. I had a rough week at work so I haven't made much progress on this, my first day off. And probably won't this weekend but I did make a couple decisions as to how I will progress forward. First of all here is the latest pic, again I apologize for how small a step this is. Wow I just realized how awful the quality is on these pictures. Well, as you can see (vaguely) I've decided to use wire to create, as best I'm able, stitch work between the hex's. Trying to capture some of the feel from the rest of the game and use it here, I'm not sure how it will come out after I reprime the gaps and the wire, and then eventually paint it but I hope it will work nicely. The IT (Impassable Terrain) markers have been texturized with some sand I've got left over and then primed with black gesso. They look uneven but I've tested all of them and models stand quite steadily on each of the tokens. Furthermore I took care to differ the texture on each token as much as possible to avoid making them redundant. As to other decisions, paint scheme! I think I'm going to go for very bright colors and try to make the board look patchwork like some of the puppets in the Wyrd art. I think it'll look nice at the very least, though I am nervous about pulling it off without making it painful on the eyes. Especially with my painting skill, which isnt much to write home about. Oh well, at least I'm having fun right! So onward bound and hopefully I'll have something better (in quality as well) to show you all tomorrow. Heres hoping!
  5. Yeah we've definately been having a blast. Interesting list ideas, I'm going to have to look into the marshall, I like the blanket combat buff and a ranged attack is always nice. I'm kinda on the fence about Marcus, I know he's got potential but I can't seem to get him close enough to utilize his abilities without getting myself chopped to pieces. That will come with time though I know. @slartibartfast definately try some proxy games, it is soo much fun that it would be a shame to miss out just due to the release schedule lol.
  6. Karn, Lalo (please don't hold the abbreviation against me! I have a terrible memory), thank you very much for your help and the clarification, I didn't realize at first that you guys had such an active role in the rules process, if thats the way its intended then thats the way we'll play! I'm glad that this thread has opened up a bit to multiple questioners I think it will be a valuable resource to new players.
  7. Ok so for my tokens Im using cork board for my impassable terrain and am going to use a sculpting tool to rough the surface up a bit and prime with more gesso and then paint them up nicely. This is what I ended up putting together, they still need alot of work. For work benches I cut out some pretty sturdy cardboard backings and glued some popsicle sticks down for planking. For these I plan on texturizing with the sculpting tools again and then priming and painting in the appropriate colors. And thats my progress thus far, soooo much work left to do but I really enjoy this game so I think it will be well worth it in the end. Ill leave you with what the standard map looks like on my board as is. Any recommendations and tips for paiting would be hugely appreciated as I am a terrible painter.
  8. Alright so as mentioned else where I am impatient. Oh right thats probably not enough information to make this thread interesting. The short of it is, I can't wait for my shipment, its preorder so I don't even know when it will ship. Solution: Build my own board! The following will be a collection of my thoughts on the process, both to keep myself organized and to provide any other would be builders with my mistakes so they don't have to blunder through them on their own. So to start with, lets see a picture of the prototype board, this is what the fiance and I have been playing on up until last night. Now its a piece of the new board, but I'm getting ahead of myself. Wow what an awful looking board lol. So this was made by tracing 40mm bases and following the same pattern as I would with hex's. It served its purpose, but its just so ugly! The hobbyist in me knew I could do better. Thus I read up on how to draw perfect hexagons with the aid of a compass and made myself a template to trace some hex's onto another piece of poster board. Aaaaand this was the result: I would like to take this opportunity to apologize for the utter crap camera job thats displayed here, Ill be transitioning to my fiances camera for the latter portions of this but this will have to do for now. So this looks much nicer but still needs work, so next outline the hex's with an exacto and widen the space cut just a bit, then mount onto the back of the old board and prime the whole thing with black gesso. Looks rough, but itll take paint and can be improved on from here. Next post will cover the token design I'm going to go for, I'm not sure the image restrictions and I apologize if these sizes are too large, but I'm still getting readjusted to forum etiquette lol.
  9. Wow awesome on the speed of response guys. Okay so everything was answered in about the way I thought it should be, so I don't feel soooo ignorant any more lol. The order is determined by card flip huh, well thats how we did it originally I just felt like we were wasting cards and I kept losing good ones heh. I still wonder on the Pokey Viktoria thing, I would make the case that she qualifies as a friendly puppet and so the ability should affect her. As per Death Marshalls ability that increases combat by 1 for all friendlies, that would affect him as well, he couldnt attack without multitasker but if he could it would be at combat +1 correct? So then I would only assume that hers would affect her as well, which would drop her to the 5 AR benchmark that most masters beside Seamus fall into. I suppose we'll just have to play it at AR 7 until I hear otherwise. Thank you all very much! I just started my work week back up so it wont be until the weekend for more games and more questions but if I come across any while theory crafting this will be where I take them. Thanks much!
  10. So as posted previously, my fiance and I are trying to muddle through the Puppet Wars rules without the actual rulebook. In our games this evening we stumbled across some rules interactions and random events that I wasn't sure how to cover. So here they are, I would greatly appreciate any help the community can provide. 1. Pokey Viktoria: this one is straight forward, does her reduction in AC apply to herself? I assume so as she would qualify as a friendly puppet unless I'm mistaken. We've been playing it as though it does so far. 2. December Acolyte: she's collected an upgrade from the enemy, the Executioner if I remember correctly. She is then killed triggering her other ability which sends upgrades to the scrap pile instead removed from play. Does the enemy upgrade go to the enemies scrap yard, or as it was attached to my model, does it go to my scrap yard. We played it as if it went to my scrap yard. 3. Animation Card: if both players play a card of equal value who goes first? We've already corrected the mistake of whoever has the highest card goes first. Now this comes up and Im not sure what procedure is. We've been rolling a die and whoever comes up highest goes. I had other questions but they slip my mind. As I run into more and as my previous questions come back to me I'll keep posting them here to be answered by the experts, and to hopefully benefit those who are trying to learn the game along with me. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!
  11. Wow I love this game lol. I've got my preorder in for the main box and am anxiously awaiting its arrival. In the mean time Ive cobbled together a large hexboard (its actually circles traced from 40mm bases) and am playing with proxy 30mm models. My fiance and I have been playing 2-3 games a night for the past few days and I've really enjoyed the learning experience thus far. It took us a while to grasp the rules as I was just having to piece it together from the site, but I think we're mostly rules accurate at this point. After some bouncing around we've settled on two 5 model lists for the time being. (She wants to learn with a smaller number of puppets so as not to be confused by the multitude of rules). Her list has remained the same for all of our games: Justice, Judge, Death Marshall, Austringer, Executioner. Basically all the Guild models from the core set. Observations thus far: the Judge can be an absolute beast! His pins and needles ability coupled with the buff from Justice can wreck shop, assuming we haven't bodged the rules interactions here. And even after you kill the guy his upgrade is awesome. The Executioner and Death Marshall for some reason die very early, I don't intend to focus fire them down but it always ends up happening. The austringer has the second highest kill count of all her models. Being able to stay in the back and zap anything that another team member has weakened is proving to be straight money. Justice herself has yet to do much besides claim work benches and buff. I'm looking forward to seeing her open up more and use her models more aggressively as I think the guild options can really be blunt instruments and shes been scared to apply them in the right places so far. My crew has changed a bit but I think I've found something I like: Marcus, Joss, Acolyte, Moleman, Ice Golem. Joss has been an absolute wrecking ball so far, and his card draw on misses coupled with the Acolytes hunting ability has been keeping my hand nice and flush. The molemans maneuverability is really nice, and he actually hits pretty hard when hiding in terrain. Makes getting to work benches easy. Marcus sadly hasn't done much for me yet, but I am looking forward to using his abilities more, they look potent. The acolyte besides being my hand management tool, is an upgrade grabbing machine, Im actually considering running more than 1 when we up our model count cause I really like the versatility. Lastly the Ice Golem, that blaster is great! Its a free action so unless I'm mistaken, move 2 make an attack, then free action to blast something and you dont even need to beat defense, hes got a nice head count going based on that alone. (Joss is also awesome in that regard, his range 2 discard to do rips move is nice). I'll post in better detail our reports after I'm sure that we're playing the rules right, at this point we've gotten pretty close but there are still some uncertainties. Also I suppose I'm going to have to order the multiplayer upgrade and some pawn boxes to get some of the models for my list, haven't even gotten my first box yet and I'm already getting ready to buy more! Evil Wyrd! Anyhow I look forward to being more active on the forums with regard to Puppet Wars and if I can ever get some actual games of Malifaux in than in that regard as well. I would love any suggestions from you few that have been playing longer on what to add to my list when we hit Shoebox size. I like the Hand Manipulation/Hitting Power combo that my list thus far has so adding to that strategy would be superb.
  12. First off, wow it has been a long time since I actually logged in here. I'd like to say that this venture would benefit me personally a ton, I love the the Malifaux system, but am 3 hours in either direction to any gaming stores. I play Vassal Warmahordes quite a bit and have been hunting around for a Malifaux module for quite some time, so excellent to see it in progress. I know that you probably don't need any more testers, but I would be happy to assist in that regard, I'm not very familiar with Malifaux as I have yet to be able to get even one game in, but am veeeery familiar with the Vassal Warmahordes module so could possibly gauge ease of use for someone new to Malifaux. Secondly, I would like to throw this out while you are in the development phase. How difficult would it be for you to include a hex/square overlay to facilitate playing Puppet Wars with the Vassal module. Ive been proxying Puppet Wars games with my Fiance and I believe Vassal with an overlay would lend itself very well to playing some puppet wars games. The counters are all readily available and easy to rename to suit your purpose, and if you've incorporated the number system from Warmahordes keeping track of Rips would be a breeze. The backbone is there and you wouldnt even really need to include separate model art, it would be easy to recycle the Malifaux art, being as most of the names are going to be the same. Anyhow just an idea, but as Puppet Wars is rapidly becoming one of my more favorite games I think including functionality for it would be amazing. Anyhow kudos on your work man, I think alot of people are going to be chomping at the bit for this module.
  13. Indeed, and if there was an LGS for me to recruit from I would indeed do just that. Unfortunately in this area Table-gaming is more or less unheard of. I have to drive to Houston and the like to even visit a store. I apologize for the paragraph shortage in the OP but I was dog tired and part of my brain had already shut down. Thanks for the welcome EricJ, its good to hear that its in the works, Vassal saves people like me from complete exclusion heh.
  14. Well hello all, long time viewer first time caller (or poster as it were). I decided it was time to take the leap and get an account. I am a fresh wargamer from the deep south, though it should be pointed out here that I prefer the north in almost every way heh. I've been wargaming for around 5 months now, and am relatively awful thus far, but I have fun with the hobby elements and I love games so I'm enjoying myself none the less. I love to listen/play music in my free time, as well as reading/writing and playing any games electronic or otherwise I can get my grubby little hands on. I have yet to actually get a game of Malifaux in as there is no gaming group closer than around 3 hours from what I've determined in my searches. I have however played quite a few Warmahordes games as it was my freshman wargame. Great game but the dice are my bane so I'm really looking forward to delving further into malifaux. Hopefully someone will get a vassal module online for malifaux and save me from my isolation. In any case I'll be posting my attempts at both terrain creation and miniature painting, and hopefully some battle reports down the road. I would also like to take a crack at some fiction but that may be a ways off. In any case hello all and I'll see you around.
