  1. Yeah, the only way to pull of the "million corpses on turn one" thing is to take a bunch of dogs and set em up around one punk, then pull a slice and dice on all of em. Actually not a horrible strategy as you can spend the first two turns "upgrading" your army from canines to crooked men/punks/whatever else the situation calls for. It's a good "reaction" list for when you aren't sure what your opponent is rolling with.
  2. There is a store called Pandemonium Books and Games that has Malifaux, it's in Central Square right between Harvard and MIT, five feet from the subway stop for Central. I don't know if I've seen Silent Ones there, but I don't usually look for them because I don't play Raspy.
  3. See, the thing about it is it's great, situationally. When you're Nicodem, you know that the entire first half of the game you're scrounging for corpses, and when you're getting them piecemeal like that it's better to go for punks and crooked men, that sort of thing. However, when things start to go sour and you're surrounded by corpses and you've only got one high crow, that's when you pull out the rogue necro. He's a real danger, and you can trust that your opponent will be spending the next turn or so focusing exclusively on him, or else being eaten alive by him. I'd never start with him, but as a summon, he gives Nic a much needed "heavy".
  4. No Arise or Bolster, yes anything else. Reanimator draws from 6" away from the vulture, or at least I think that's how it's intended to be. It's been so long since I've used the bird, I'm so addicted to my grave spirit.
  5. Resurrectionists have no weakness. Join the dark side, my child... Ok but seriously, eat their corpses with your pig. That's a dirty trick and I hate it, so it must be good for you. Also remember that Nic's mindless zombies count as corpses, so the pig can instakill them.
  6. So people can play guild traitor Marcus, perhaps?
  7. Got it in one. They should be released in future book, in the same style as the gremlin "kin", meaning that other res masters will be able to get one or two, but a crew including Molly gets unlimited numbers of them. But yeah, right now the only crew for molly is Rogue Necro, Sybelle, and lots of belles.
  8. Oooooooohhhh, so beautiful... I never knew that errata... I usually use them for denial, let me rush a flank while a couple shafts cover it up, or spam the little beauties around a treasure chest to make my opponent's life a pain.
  9. Seb could add some nice summoning support to your army as well as being a heavy hitter, but I always prefer betty as a high-point addition to an army because she may be the most infuriating and fun to play minion in all of malifaux.
  10. A Kirai/Nicodem brawl is actually perhaps the craziest summoning combo in the game. With minimal effort, you can set up an infinite Seishin factory, and throw as many spirits as you can possibly summon at your opponent. The only challenge is striking a balance early in the game, defensively, and keeping both Nic and Kirai alive. But if you're not into brawls that are just massive spirit-fests, then you may want to switch out with Seamus. I've found McM only really works with Kirai, because he tends to bodypartify corpses, which leads to a bit of a resource squeeze if you pair him with Nic, and a belle deficit if you pair him with Seamus. Seamus pairs well with either Nic or Kirai, because he can essentially just go off kicking ass and taking names while Nic and Kirai pull their weight summoning. Even if you don't play ghost factory, Nic and Kirai work well as a team, just because of resource independence. Kirai's basic summon doesn't require corpses or crows, and her movement spell in the spirit world takes a mask, so you're not quite as strapped for crows as you are pairing either Seamus or McM with Nicodem. Nic's Fog is also very good for keeping Kirai alive, maintaining the soft cover around them. Keeping the two of them close together means that whenever one of the shambling hordes kicks the bucket, which they do frequently, Kirai gets a seishin.
  11. Personally, my Kirai strategy is to cause panic by throwing as many shikomes at my opponent as I possibly can, because I play Kirai in a very risky, front line sort of way that gives me a lot of extra seishin to play with, so I'd recommend them as a good purchase if you're an agressive player with Kirai, if you're more reserved, you'll mostly be throwing out Onryos for summons. Will you be playing a crew that can be hit by a large hammer? If yes, then Taelor is a good fit.
  12. Depends on your playstyle. Nicodem and seamus are the two complete opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of Ressers, and mostly it depends on where you want to be chuckling evilly. Do you prefer chuckling while hidden in some evil lair, steepling your fingers as you watch your foes overwhelmed by hordes of your faithful minions? Nicodem. Do you prefer chuckling after shooting/stabbing your opponent repeatedly in the face from a couple feet away, leading the charge of your somewhat smaller army of minions? Seamus. Personally, I'm a schemer, I love Nicodem and the way he plays, and I love the versatility that comes with his power. Seamus is much more durable, and has a lot more raw kickass potential, and I can see the appeal in that. Personally, I'm no fan of the dead rider, which you've got in your nic list, I'd replace that with either a whole lot of minions (dogs, crooked men, etc) or bete. Because I love bete. You also probably want to keep the Punks in reserve for summoning, they're much more effective when you res them right into the middle of a fight, rather than trying to get into close combat with your opponent. I'd replace the 3 punks with 3 crooked men, and res the punks once you get corpses. Plus, you get 3 extra stones to play with. As for the Seamus list, can't help you on that, I've never played Seamus, and I've only ever seen him played exceedingly badly.
  13. Kirai: (minimum) box 2 packs Seishin (for five) 1 Lost Love 1 pack gaki (because they show up with no effort.) Optional: 1 shikome, night terrors. Seamus: minimum: Box optional: Any other undead. Betty is fun and thematic. Molly. McMourning: Minimum: Zombie dogs, at least four. Box Optional: Any other undeads, an extra Flesh Construct, Guild Autopsies, Rogue Necro, Chihuahua. Nicodem: (minimum) Box 2 Packs Mindless zombies (probably. You could squeak by with one) 2 Packs of Dogs Optional: your favorite summoned critters. Crooked men, Rogue Necro, Flesh Construct, etc etc etc.
  14. I dunno about them fitting any kind of niche. I mean, maybe if you're really strapped for soulstones, or KNOW that you're playing guild, you might consider them, but in all other cases I'd take desperate mercenaries (cheap option) or Crooked Men (slightly more expensive option.) The crookeds are a much more versatile model, much more durable, blasty, meaning that they can hold off groups of enemies, and deal damage to those tough models that are harder to wound, and they leave corpses. Worth one extra point? Yeah, I think so.
  15. Having some unpainted models is cool for the tourney, as long as they're official Wyrd, right?
  16. Brilliant tacticas (tacti?), they're really helping me get my feet off the ground with dreamer, but I have one thing to ask: please go through and check your grammar, or have another person do it for you if it's not your thing. "The dreamer is the heart and sole of his crew" made me die a little inside. The teeny, tiny part of me that still cares about grammar, that is. I just know other people are more anal about it, and it's really full of good advice, it could just use a tad bit of polishing. Note: A way (I think) to explain unexplained connection is that coppelius and hoffman are two of the main characters in a classic German short storry by E.T.A Hoffman. In the story, the main character becomes convinced that a lawyer, Coppelius, is the legendary sandman, who, in early German myths, would pluck out the eyes of children who stayed awake at night and feed them to his children, who lived on the moon. Note note: Don't ask how I know that.
  17. I actually have just crossed into neverborn territory, being a rather experienced Nicodem (zombies galore) and some'er teeth (gremlins galore) player, and I absolutely am in love with the dreamer. He may be tied with Leveticus for the least straightforward master in the game (Levi's major strategy revolves around dying a lot and coming back) but he's just awesome. For one thing, the starter box is fairly strong for the dreamer, and if you buy that and a pack of alps to play with and summon occasionally, you've got a very solid crew. While lilith may be easy to play, I've often been bored with her as a strategic piece, although the nephilim tend to be fairly fun. For her, you would need to pick up the pack of young nephs, and then the starter box gives you babies and a big boy. The reason I would recommend the dreamer is that, although you are new to the game, you are probably experienced enough to handle basic gaming interactions and you'll grasp the basics fast, and the dreamer personifies, to me, the personality of Malifaux. He's tricky, creepy, with a nice heaping of nasty monsters, and topped off with a generous helping of black humor. There's nothing like the frustration of your opponent trying to pin down a five year old boy who can fly and switch places with a giant, murderous demon. His minions are delightfully weird and spooky, especially coppelius and the terrifyingly adorable teddy, and he just highlights why Malifaux is such a unique game. There's my piece. If you're going for ease of getting into the game, I'd say start with Lilith, but for sheer enjoyment, I would pick the dreamer.
  18. I'm extremely new to the little guy, but I've found great success with relying on coppelius to bring alps in. Maybe it's the nicodem player in me, but I just don't feel safe without a summoner in my ranks, and the ability to put models on the board and replace your losses gives your opponents the nice sense of futility you want in a game where every model is precious. I have yet to play with madnesses, but I like the way their rules look. I am, of course, the exact opposite of an expert at this master.
  19. My advice for you, after you pick up a few models (might I advise getting a few zombie dogs as well, or proxying them, they're excellent for Nic) is to leave the punks off the board at the start of the game. Don't bring them in your crew. Nicodem's summon is his single most powerful ability, and because you can summon any undead, it works best if you summon the most expensive, powerful one possible, and with the punk zombies, you can often plop them right into melee, or close enough, so keeping them as summon material might be a good move. With the starter set, focus on combat, because you don't have any spare models to summon, except for re-summoning your punks once they die. If you can choose a model to sacrifice, make it them, because they're easy for you to replace.
  20. Nicodem is a tough guy to get to, but there are many masters and models that can do very nasty things by launching themselves at him. Take Bete noir or killjoy: either can just pop out of nowhere and cause a nicodem player to piss his trousers. Also, once in melee, there's no way for nic to get out. His pathetic 3 defense means that breaking away will often require you to burn a soulstone just to hobble 3 inches away, and it's not as if he has a lot of options at that point, because his only weapon happens to be a not very suited for combat cane. I think you'll find that, while he's difficult to kill, he's not the most destructive master, and a strategy of corpse denial (by running lady justice, a non-living army, or otherwise consuming the bodies yourself) will take nicodem down a few significant notches.
  21. Yeah, I want my shikome....
  22. Two words, my friend, two words: Mercenary. Hamelin. Dance those little guys right off the table. he has such a threat range against them, it's almost unfair.
  23. True. so the way it plays is Cards are flipped. Player looks at cards. If, say, the zombie actually beat nicodem by a large margin, player can then choose to auto-fail, counting the result and damage flip as if it was equal?
  24. Hm... you're right, I should update this. Not a lot going on for ol Nic in book two except for the wonderful bag of fun that is the Rogue Necromancy. but a few more interesting options, to be sure. I'm actually not sure about the auto-failing thing. I dont have a whole lot of experience with attacking my own models, and usually the ruling is just to do it as if you were doing a regular attack. I usually use my worst card in hand to cheat down the defender's flip, and hope for a moderate or severe damage, because those include blast effects that heal whole clumps of your own zombies.
  25. Pandora is the trollmaster, in my opinion. I love playing her, hate playing against her, which is how she's supposed to be. With all her perceived overpowerness, she isn't great at actually achieving most objectives due to the small number of significant models she usually brings along, and her reliance on herself as the killing machine and lynchpin of her army. I always love playing Nicodem and Kirai, not neccessarily together, because of the variety of them. The choices you get to make mid game make you more versatile than any other army out there. My least favorite by far to play against is Rasputina. She is the most straightforward, plain old boring master to play against, and it seems like half the time I play malifaux, I wind up against her. Unfortunately, the killer snowmen (I was secretly hoping the silent one was going to be a snowman when I first heard about it) just make her range more ludicrous, and give crews more incentive to sit in the back and try to pick you off.
