  1. It seems my flier is missing a few things: Game size is 35 soul stones Format is from the gaining ground event format.
  2. Hey gang it's time for the 2nd annual Toys for the Tots event supporting the Toys for Tots charity. If you intend to play please bring unwrapped toys that meet the critera provided by the Toys for Tots foundation. Do keep the recept with your purchases so that I know how many cheat tokens to award you. Yes there will be a Nghtmare Edition Lord Chompy Bitz available for the charity auction after the event. Let me explain that I keep a running total of all the cheat tokens a participant earns via donating toys. That total is what you use to bid on these items. Not what you save or spend during the tournament that total is separate. If you need help with directions to the event you can either call (706)-860-6553 or contact me here on the forum. The shop can be reached via interstate I-20 taking the Bobby Jones Expressway "West" exit onto the Bobby Jones Expressway. The name of the store is the Augusta Book Exchange and it resides in Anderson Plaza which will be on your right as you come onto the Bobby Jones Expressway.
  3. This event is this Sunday gang. Our prizes have gone up to the bag for winning the event and and we have auctions for nice things like A nightmare edition Lord Chompy Bitz kindly provided by Wyrd Miniatures and a Tron Legacy movie poster donated by Regal Theaters. There will be more as well. Come on down it's going to be a great time.
  4. Wow I've started something. I hope this goes well for you too Might I suggest changing the speed cheat to lasting only until the closing phase?
  5. Bump for change in event details -cheat rule "Speed" changed duration to until the start of the closing phase -prize support Malifaux Bag from Battle Foam for the event champion as well as raffle drawings during the event. -special guest Weird Sketch
  6. What: A Malifaux 35 soul stone event sponsoring the Toys for Tots program. When: November 21st, 2010 starting at 1pm with an early checkin at 12:30pm for event participants & staff only. Where: The Augusta Book Exchange at 592 Bobby Jones Expressway in Augusta, GA. (706)860-6553 Entry Fee: Free! Just bring at least one toy meeting the standards of the Toys for Tots program to donate to their noble cause. So how does this work? Well much like some of our other charity events at the shop you get to cheat while playing in this event. That is you bring in a toy or toys to the specifications of the Toys for Tots program to donate http://augusta-ga.toysfortots.org/local-coordinator-sites/lco-sites/default.asp and we hand you fate tokens equal to the dollar value rounded up of the original MSRP (or the price from a kept sales reciept) of the toys donated. During your games you get to cheat by spending the fate tokens. You can cheat as much as you like but each cheat beyond the first in each game round doubles in price. For example your first cheat costs one fate token but if you wish to cheat again in the same game round it will cost you two tokens and then 4 tokens for the 3rd cheat and so on. The count resets at the end of the end phase but fate tokens spent are gone for good. You may donate more during the event if you wish to gain more tokens. Cheats! Like What Can I Do With Those Fate Tokens? Reflip: After you flip a card for any reason you may reflip provided that it is not the Black Joker. You may reflip as often as you can pay fate tokens for it. You may reflip cards flipped for strategies before the game starts as well at the same cost. Negative or positive flips do not matter in this case and you may all ways pay fate tokens to reflip. Ignore Black Joker: If you flip the Black Joker you may ignore it and reflip in exchange for a fixed 5 fate token cost. This cost does not increase like the other cheats. Buy a card: Once during each round you may draw a fate card into your hand in exchange a fate token at the standard rate. Bonus Soul Stone: Once during each game you may spend fate tokens at the standard rate to add a soul stone to your soul stone cache. This may be done at any time. Speed: Once per model activation you may spend fate tokens at the standard rate to give the model (+1) Fast to their Actions lasting until the start of the closing phase. May not be given to models which all ready have "Fast". Wealth in Giving: Before the start of each game you may add a totem to a master (at their normal limit) at no soul stone cost in exchange for 1 fate token. Heal: Once during each closing phase you may make a healing flip for any one nonmaster nonhenchman model in exchange for fate tokens at the standard rate. Models cannot heal beyond their starting wounds stat in this way. Prizes: A Malifaux Bag from Battle Foam for the event winner and several raffle drawings. Also we may be visited by Weird Sketch provided his schedule is good for that day.
  7. I do it on the side as a third piece of income but it mostly just pays for my gaming hobby. I tend not to fill up all my free time with painting and as such take very few contracts. Usually just enough so that I can finish a batch of 20-30 models a month at table quality with a hero or elite unit thrown in there with the nicer paint job. Personally I can't see doing it as my primary profession. I make far too much money being an x-ray tech and I need the benefits for my family. A painting job could not initially provide anything for health insurance and it's pretty much a bust should something happen to my motor skills or hands. As is I can be compensated for any injuries or unforseen mental disorders (parkenson's/stroke/etc.) in addition to unemployment/disability pay. Sounds like a mouthfull there but if you can at least cover your health insurance say if your spouse had you insured through their job then it's doable. In fact if you plan on having children it's ideal because you could stay at home like many graphic designers/artists and work while taking time to watch the kids. It takes a strong work ethic though. If you want to test yourself try painting up your own stuff. Seriously set a deadline for yourself say 35 soul stones worth of models to be done in a week at better than table top quality, packed & ready to go with full basing. If you can do that and be serious about making deadlines then you may have found your line of work sir. And I say "may" because there are so many other head aches with it: Unreasonable clients- changes their mind every day about a project or wants every model to look golden demon awesome in their 200 model army How much should I charge for my work- seriously think about it and make sure you don't come out at less than minium wage not being able to make your bills. Overhead- look at what it takes to paint models. Paint, primer, brushes, glue, sealer, basing supplies, painting area, good lighting, comfortable chair & table so that you do not hurt your back, and shipping and handling (you know boxes to put stuff in and packing materal and a place to ship it with postage). It adds up and you need to find a way to cut your costs so that you can make a profit. Shipping- Yeah as is how do you plan to get your product to your place of work and then back to the client without the product being lost or damaged. And do so being able to track your orders. And what day do you ship? Unless you use a service where the delivery guy can pick up a package where you work then you might need to go somewhere to ship it and that requires a vehicle with insurance that you should see if you can write off on your taxes. Organization- yep you need to be able to do invoices, keep track of expenses, keep different clients models from mixing up, taxes (yes I said taxes because the IRS will eventually come a knocking), and your time. Might also want to look into whether or not you need a business liscence at some point. Lastly yourself- There are things that are you. You need time away from work, time to do your life. Some things are big and come to mind when you first read it like vacation and painting your own models. Other things don't come to mind like setting a time in the day to start work and to stop work. You know clock in clock out and have time to do little things like eat and sleep or talk to your significant other. That doesn't mean there won't be crunch times but every day should not be crunch time once you get into an adjusted routine. If you do it and it's for you then I envy you. To be your own boss and be free knowing that the money your bring home was completely earned by you and is not the table scraps from some "job" or career. Not to say I don't like my jobs as I do get to help people and that makes me feel good about myself. Just that it would be nice to be self employed and free.
  8. What did you use to make the building itself? Hyrst Blocks? Very nice stuff there.
  9. After this weekend's tournie here in Augusta, Georgia I'd like to add whatever you do don't target a hard to wound 2 model with Sonnia's blast spell..... um yeah not a good plan.
  10. There are a few threads you can search for with play tricks for Sonnia. To sum them up: 1. you need more than the 4 soul stones she comes with. Preferably 6-8 soul stones depending on your local meta. 2. read the rules and faq carefully on her abilities and spells. The blast spell she has comes in quite handy against clumps of enemies that don't have damage reduction against blasts. 3. When adding models to your crew you will find easy to play options with adding some ranged support to her box. If you are looking for a challenge then add the executioner. A difficult play as the others have said but worth it vs certain match ups when you need a cheap big guy. 4. violation of magic used on an engaged witchling stalker will trigger an explosion followed by a brand new witchling stalker. 5. All ways use your 0 action point effects if you can afford it. They can really hinder a magic happy opponent. 6. Witchling stalkers are excellent for grabbing objectives with their ability to ignore movement penalties from terrain and their added defense against magic.
  11. They all ready make sleeves in the size needed for Malifaux. They are roughly 5"x3.5" and are often called top loaders or post card top loaders. Several companies make these items including Ultrapro and BCW Supplies. We carry them at the shop I work at and sell them individually or in packs of 20. The ones I use have a little space at the top & side that's not covered by the card and I use my wet erase pens to scribble down soul stone totals and other counters. Then there's no tokens in the way on the table and if my opponent needs to see anything about my model then he/she can check the card and clearly see how many of each item are there plus stats and current health.
  12. It really depends on what you prefer. Nino adds a stupid amount of range to the game and I believe has scout (my book is packed for a house move right now) and an amazing amount of range with good abilities for picking off low wound models quickly so that you can out number your opponent if you like the "guild raid" scheme. The convict gunslinger is more my style as well. Shorter range but has a paired weapon which is makes my lousy luck much better. That plus focus means the big bad guys are more likely to take heavier damage. You do need some cheap minions though for objectives and screening sonia if you like the body guard scheme that's why I like to keep a few witchling stalkers in my crew. Six wounds and they blowup when they die so they hamper the enemy well. Plus they have scout which lets them get to those objectives faster than many other guild choices.
  13. This has happened with several new "hot" games in the past and currently. I work at a local shop and we have problems from time to time with various products. The best thing for us to do is to get together and start finding distributors common to our areas that can serve the product and reps who will listen to our concerns and make things happen. If you do that then you can weed out the poor preforming reps and distributors who just don't seem to ever have certain products in stock. The other thing you can do is to preorder a head of time. And by a head of time I mean as a retailer hit your local shop forum and advertise a preorder as soon as it hits your fax/email from the distributor. The managers and myself do this at my local shop and other than occasionally being shorted it really cuts down on the not getting product. You can even offer a small discount in exchange for prepaying for the product or at least putting X dollars down for the preorder.
  14. 1. Best tip practice many times a week. Shorter practices at first to help keep you focused without burning out. 2. Best technique, patience and study. When painting you should look to the real world equivalent or even other painted models for reference. Think of a model like a term paper and do your research. Like the folds of fabric have shadows and brighter patches when actually worn or when hanging over furniture. So when painting clothes on a model it's a good idea to study something like a jacket to see how light puts shadows and glare onto different parts of the jacket. 1. Washing is the use of an "ink" or "wash" to stain certain parts of a model. Most often beginners use it for painting faces. 2. Highlighting is the one of the last steps in painting. If you look closely at many "propainted" models to the raised edges there are many layers of progressively brighter color paint leading out to white. This happens in life but painters exaggerate the effect so that it is visible on a small scale model. 3. Shading is the shadow. But keep in mind that you have shadows on your face but they are not dark black splotches. They are darker spots where the light does not hit and reflect cleanly so they appear darker to the eye. While on display your model doesn't often have a light source that moves to create that effect so we paint it in. The sites others have mentioned and the videos are great. Try buying some cheap models (Reaper has good prices for practice models and the undead crews are a great place to start with Malifaux for quick results to encourage more painting) And yes you should in most cases wait for paint to dry. There are techniques that need the paint to be wet but that is not for a beginner. Try to relax and don't force the paint onto the model. This really is an art form but anyone can do it. The will to practice and study is what makes a master great. Then yes you are "dry brushing" way too much. The concept is to use thin layers of paint and build up slowly. Dry brushing is for "things" like chain mail, wolve's fur, space marine bolters etc. that tend to have particular paterns like the chain mail or fur and/or have a heavy metal finish like a bolter or tarnished sword. Start here and should you have a camera post some pics of your progress. As you come along many of us will ask about what you are doing and if you have more questions then of course we have answers.
  15. If you are using the zoom then stop pan it all the way out. Move the camera to where the image on screen shows brightly. Then switch to either a fast motion mode or the macro photography mode. (usually a little running guy symbol for the fast motion or a flower symbol for the macro photography). Then zoom in just enough to show detail and stabilize the camera as best you can. If you can select a zone of the image to focus then use that as well. It'll make your pics so much better. Never have the light source shining on to the backs or sides of the model. All ways to the front and defuse the light is you can to take the glare off. The trick as it were is to make the model look well lit up on the view finder as well as to fool the camera into focusing on models which are often not the majority of what's in the image. Too often an automatic focus or digital camera wants to focus on something in the foreground or back ground instead of where your models are.
  16. Werner does make some great stuff and I hope he keeps sculpting for other companies. I've loved his pieces for Reaper and Privateer Press and had to slap myself for not recognizing his work here. I hope when we do get to see some more "avatar" figures that he does a few more for the Neverborn. It might convince me to pick up a crew of them instead of sticking to the Guild as I have.
  17. The best way for a player base to support their favorite game when this type of thing pops up is to talk up your favorite game not bad mouth other games. Not saying it's stepped there yet. Just saying that it's a winning strategy and so much more polite for games to compete based upon their own characteristics instead of a game of political back stabbing. However I am a Georgia resident and that does make me favor Wyrd just a little bit
  18. What's your plan for the windows? Will you put in glass and if so what material will you use for it?
  19. Well I like Einstürzende Neubauten's armenia for painting up Resurectionist Crews. Makes me think of McMorning working new material before it's not quite dead. But be warned it is definitely not work safe. People will think you're torturing someone in your office. But it is rather nice creepy industrial music. At worst it goes back in the playlist for Halloween to scare the trick or treaters. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCX6KvfIovU[/ame] I like some of their other stuff as well but you really have to be picky with them. Thanks for the other suggestions. Now I just have to find the budget to add them to my playlist.
  20. Nicodemus and Friends are a crew I painted for another player in my area. Sonia and Friends are mine and are still in progress.
  21. Understood. If you could give us a head's as the time draws near that would be great though. I work at a local game shop and I try to keep them on top of new things. Usually with new early release GenCon stuff I send out ninja shoppers for me to bring back a little of this and that to fix up for the shop as promo for preorders. Thanks for replying so quickly as well.
  22. You've answered a lot of fan questions but how about some industry questions. What's the price point going to be for Book 2? Will there be Crew Boxes for the new crews immediately available at Gencon? Or will we just be purchasing individual pieces for the time being? What other accessories or models from Book 1 will be available at Gencon? And lastly how much time between Gencon and general release of these items will there be?
  23. You just have to stay consistent in running events and playing games. I'm a big Warmachine/Hordes player but after one or two games of that I'm ready to sit down due to all the stretching across tables to push pewter. Malifaux has been great because I can play something else and Malifaux so far hasn't burned me out playing it. But the key to getting any game started in a store is consistency. You have to be there ready to play regularly.
  24. I attribute it to most folks seem to have what they need for the most of whatever other games they play and are waiting on a few new items. So Malifaux coming in gave them something to open their wallets for.
