  1. I agree, in the USA at least, we don't have a suitable feminine equivalent to guys or dudes.
  2. Wow, so many great posts, too many to quote. Regarding the 'gamer girl' term, I am glad someone else brought it up. Honestly, it is a term that didn't bother me much when I was younger, but has become more annoying over the years. For those that don't understand why, there are two things for me that make it a problem. Calling a grown woman a girl can seem infantilizing (tho I agree that sometimes it is meant only as a less formal identifier). The other issue is the way it is used to denigrate other men, which I see all too often in gaming. It equates being female with a whole bunch of negative traits. Also, I just want to agree that being given 'revered status' is not a compliment.
  3. Basically what I meant, thanks for the example. These are the blurry areas that even well intentioned people have difficulty navigating, and aren't necessarily generalizable.
  4. What these discussions have highlighted for me is that there are plenty of people who just don't care about the abuses going on in their community, IRL or online. Which is fine, one is totally within their rights to not care about others, though it could be argued to meet certain pathological definitions. But for those who are choosing to care about stopping harassment, there is still a disconnect where many don't perceive a lot of the threatening behaviors going on. I think that is likely to be the more fruitful discussion.
  5. First, I want to thank wyrd for once again opening a space for this discussion. And I am grateful that the malifaux community is IMO the most diverse and inclusive group of gamers I have encountered in the last twenty plus years as a tabletop gamer. I would say that the most common instances of sexism I have experienced in gaming would fall into the ignorant and mildly annoying category. Comments that assume I have a boyfriend who got me into gaming, that I must be a noob, stupid labels like unicorn. Then there are the more grossly inappropriate comments which include rape jokes or language, the use of misogynistic or homophobic epithets to mock other players, comments about my body or attire. This type of behavior shouldn't be condoned ever, regardless of whether or not someone from the maligned group is present. What is perhaps most hurtful though, for me at least, is the isolation that comes with often being the only woman in the room. It means never quite being inside the club, not getting invited to events, dealing with all the things I mentioned above while also having to constantly justify why it is upsetting. I've read a lot of comments on this subject the past few days. It hurts that I have seen friends say they wouldn't tolerate the sexist behavior, and I know this to be false. It makes me angry that some men seem to think that anything short of assault is no big deal. And as a member of the larger gaming community, I find it highly disconcerting that this is such a hot button issue in the first place.
  6. I am in Austin and occasionally have checked on the Dallas scene, but it seems to have been pretty quiet for a while now. Do a forum search to return posts with keyword dallas - it seems there were a few people runing stuff in late 2012, and may give you an idea of some stores to call up or stop by. Also, I know it is pretty far for you, but there is a good group of people in the Killeen/Waco area. Good luck and enjoy the game.
  7. Yes, I am resurrecting this thread. I am glad it was pointed out to me and think it might be of interest to others. Will be stealing these ideas soon!
  8. She is tiny looking. Might try using her as a LSPA (not necessarily for official events, but can't imagine casual games anyone would have a problem) when the wave 2 rules come out. Might need to be on a 40mm base for that though, can't remember.
  9. Hey, I am the Austin henchperson. I have not been running any weekend events lately, waiting on the edition change, but will try to get some things going this fall. We usually meet Wednesday nights at the Austin lair, but unfortunately my school schedule means I can't get there until about 9pm during the week, but a few other may be there earlier than that. There are other players in the Austin area, but they come and go, hoping to get some back in with the new release. Please check out www.centexwar.com, which is where I will post stuff in addition to here. There are a few SA players there as well, though they don't post frequently. I do know one person from SA but have not talked to him in a while. Will check if he is still active and send you a PM with his name. There is another game store in SA too where they would play, but can't remember the name. Will see if i can find it somewhere. Also, I am in San Marcos Mon-Thurs for school, though my schedule is pretty packed, but may occasionally find time to meet up somewhere. Feel free to PM me if you like.
  10. You can also check the list found here http://www.malifaux.com/Henchman.php to see if there is a local henchman you might contact for a demo and to find out about events and groups in your area.
  11. Does anyone know the issue number for this mag? Will check the LGS tomorrow to see if they have it. Edit: nevermind, just found pics on their facebook page - it must be issue 162 correct?
  12. I'm hoping Burt gets promoted and will be dual Outcast/Gremlins. And I also think it likely Misaki becomes dual Outcast, mainly because she can hire so many mercs already.
  13. I believe she has been confirmed Outcast/Resser ---------- Post added at 01:50 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:47 AM ---------- Not sure which podcast it came from, but several threads have noted that it was said Arcanists will not get any more dual faction masters, outside of Mei Feng.
  14. Just looked it up - Rose Crowshaw - at the very end of book 3.
  15. Would be interesting if any Guard/Marshalls hired that subsequently die could be resurrected as Guild Autopsies: "Just a flesh wound"
  16. I can see McMourning entering into Guild with a severely restricted Resser hiring pool - probably Nurses, Sebastian - with as someone mentioned earlier an emphasis on crew buffs and survivability over summoning. Otherwise, I just can't see it making any sense. But I think this new dual faction element will be slightly different than the one in place for 10T - I saw those hiring allowances as basically a) accounting for the synergy between a master and their appointed crew and making up for the fact that 10T would otherwise have a very small selection of models. Here I think it will have a more thematic purpose, but no idea yet what that may be, though I imagine if McMourning runs as Guild, his model selection will be largely restricted to Guild models with only a few exceptions.
  17. I haven't listened to all the podcasts myself, but from the reporting in other threads it appears that there will not be a second dual faction master in Arcanists. So what wild speculation do you all have for who will fill the seventh slot? My vote is Rose (was it Rose? who went off with Marcus in book 3? I might be thinking of Rosie the Riveter, my books are *all the way upstairs* right now, may check later and edit). But anyway, that is who I propose. Any other thoughts?
  18. I was hoping for something like this also. It's not like it would hurt individual retailers either, as otherwise I (and others in the same situation probably) am unlikely to buy the new set anyway, just continue playing the original.
  19. Taking this from Eric's twitter "Multiple new Gremlin masters and giant piles of new gremlins, pigs, roosters, along with drink related puns and memorabilia" and in answer to the question of fielding an all pig force "Maybe not ALL pigs, but I bet you could go pigs and roosters!" So, what more can you tell us about roosters in Malifaux? Will the War Rooster become a new master?
  20. I'm wondering if Burt could get upgraded to Master with the gremlins, or possibly McTavish.
  21. Me too - such a tease making us wait until May 31!
  22. I made a mistake in the header, the correct date for this event is Saturday April 20th not 21st as shown in the header. Times listed are correct though.
  23. Just wanted to add, the document in the thread Omenbringer referenced should be editable on google docs herehttps://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AgK5XDeiVP1mdGdWYlhJaDBhVXdpTXpnTDgyaTVlblE#gid=0 so please feel free, anyone, to update as I have not had time to do so lately (and also, I don't play some of these masters so there may be better suggestions than what I had listed originally).
