  1. I agree, in the USA at least, we don't have a suitable feminine equivalent to guys or dudes.
  2. Wow, so many great posts, too many to quote. Regarding the 'gamer girl' term, I am glad someone else brought it up. Honestly, it is a term that didn't bother me much when I was younger, but has become more annoying over the years. For those that don't understand why, there are two things for me that make it a problem. Calling a grown woman a girl can seem infantilizing (tho I agree that sometimes it is meant only as a less formal identifier). The other issue is the way it is used to denigrate other men, which I see all too often in gaming. It equates being female with a whole bunch of negative traits. Also, I just want to agree that being given 'revered status' is not a compliment.
  3. Basically what I meant, thanks for the example. These are the blurry areas that even well intentioned people have difficulty navigating, and aren't necessarily generalizable.
  4. What these discussions have highlighted for me is that there are plenty of people who just don't care about the abuses going on in their community, IRL or online. Which is fine, one is totally within their rights to not care about others, though it could be argued to meet certain pathological definitions. But for those who are choosing to care about stopping harassment, there is still a disconnect where many don't perceive a lot of the threatening behaviors going on. I think that is likely to be the more fruitful discussion.
  5. First, I want to thank wyrd for once again opening a space for this discussion. And I am grateful that the malifaux community is IMO the most diverse and inclusive group of gamers I have encountered in the last twenty plus years as a tabletop gamer. I would say that the most common instances of sexism I have experienced in gaming would fall into the ignorant and mildly annoying category. Comments that assume I have a boyfriend who got me into gaming, that I must be a noob, stupid labels like unicorn. Then there are the more grossly inappropriate comments which include rape jokes or language, the use of misogynistic or homophobic epithets to mock other players, comments about my body or attire. This type of behavior shouldn't be condoned ever, regardless of whether or not someone from the maligned group is present. What is perhaps most hurtful though, for me at least, is the isolation that comes with often being the only woman in the room. It means never quite being inside the club, not getting invited to events, dealing with all the things I mentioned above while also having to constantly justify why it is upsetting. I've read a lot of comments on this subject the past few days. It hurts that I have seen friends say they wouldn't tolerate the sexist behavior, and I know this to be false. It makes me angry that some men seem to think that anything short of assault is no big deal. And as a member of the larger gaming community, I find it highly disconcerting that this is such a hot button issue in the first place.
  6. I am in Austin and occasionally have checked on the Dallas scene, but it seems to have been pretty quiet for a while now. Do a forum search to return posts with keyword dallas - it seems there were a few people runing stuff in late 2012, and may give you an idea of some stores to call up or stop by. Also, I know it is pretty far for you, but there is a good group of people in the Killeen/Waco area. Good luck and enjoy the game.
  7. Yes, I am resurrecting this thread. I am glad it was pointed out to me and think it might be of interest to others. Will be stealing these ideas soon!
  8. She is tiny looking. Might try using her as a LSPA (not necessarily for official events, but can't imagine casual games anyone would have a problem) when the wave 2 rules come out. Might need to be on a 40mm base for that though, can't remember.
  9. Hey, I am the Austin henchperson. I have not been running any weekend events lately, waiting on the edition change, but will try to get some things going this fall. We usually meet Wednesday nights at the Austin lair, but unfortunately my school schedule means I can't get there until about 9pm during the week, but a few other may be there earlier than that. There are other players in the Austin area, but they come and go, hoping to get some back in with the new release. Please check out www.centexwar.com, which is where I will post stuff in addition to here. There are a few SA players there as well, though they don't post frequently. I do know one person from SA but have not talked to him in a while. Will check if he is still active and send you a PM with his name. There is another game store in SA too where they would play, but can't remember the name. Will see if i can find it somewhere. Also, I am in San Marcos Mon-Thurs for school, though my schedule is pretty packed, but may occasionally find time to meet up somewhere. Feel free to PM me if you like.
  10. You can also check the list found here http://www.malifaux.com/Henchman.php to see if there is a local henchman you might contact for a demo and to find out about events and groups in your area.
  11. Does anyone know the issue number for this mag? Will check the LGS tomorrow to see if they have it. Edit: nevermind, just found pics on their facebook page - it must be issue 162 correct?
  12. hello hope all is well We have greeted each other a few weeks ago as you(if I am right) said " I couldnt help but notice Malifaux ans we said something to the effect about 2nd Edition and I buying new plastics. I just got into Malifuax recently, I have a core group of gamers bt e never play at Dragons Lair. 3 Malifaux players so far and more to come I hope on my end. We do board games(fantasy flight) and RPG (call of cthulhu and warhammer) we were looking for a game to replace Mordhiem from years ago and the new rules and minitures with the improved serious overtone, we decided Malifaux. So how many play Malifuax for the Dlair? Excited about the new rules and miniatures?

  13. I'm hoping Burt gets promoted and will be dual Outcast/Gremlins. And I also think it likely Misaki becomes dual Outcast, mainly because she can hire so many mercs already.
