  1. Hard worker is great for Mei in certain places as you said. Willie gets some use out of it and even the railworkers then have options depending on what they are up against.

Obviously being  kang can use it on himself as he can see himself.

Playing fixed crew means it isn't always useful but lots of people have armour ot hard to wound and some even have both (this might be when railworkers make use of it, especially if undead or constructs and in kang aura)

  2. Mei is probably my favourite master and I do drop her into too many games (even took her fixed crew to UK nationals for 3W, 2D, 2L). she has also won me tourneys when I have taken her fixed crew.

She has alot of counters to alot of things, yes her crew tends to be melee based but she can protect them quite well from enemy ranged (casts or shooting) until they do the things they need to.

You just have to be more cagey with her than you would expect for a melee fighter (one of my losses at nationals was being too aggressive with her, but was game 7 and I was tired).

usual set up for me is:

Mei - vapourmancy, siesmic claws, price of progress

Joss - bleeding edge tech, imbued energies

Kang - hard worker, imbued energies

    arcane effigy

    willie

    2 x rail workers

    Some Ironsides math:

Hank flurries on Toni. Average damage on hit is 4 and change on negative flip. Stone for reduction, average 2 and change, gain adrenaline. You end with 6 damage, 3 adrenaline, and you've dealt about 6 back. You activate, gain 4th adrenaline, finish Langston, heal 4. If you're playing the emissary, 5. Regen mage, you're full.

If you get a clean line on any key model with a low minimum, your lure becomes a better attack than swinging. You get up to six chances to make your enemy hit you, dealing 2/3/4 back, and at the end of it all you heal back up--if their minimum is 1, you essentially took nothing.

adrenaline only heals 1 at the end of the turn, then lower condition by 1. so not quite as good as you think, unless you have the upgrade to lose it all to heal

Thanks! Glad to hear that you found the post useful, and I hope it helps with getting a good Malifaux scene going at your local store. The focus on objectives for winning rather than just killing is definitely one of things that drew me to Malifaux, and focusing on how to score VP each turn rather than simply killing is important to victory. Of course, there's also the school of thought that says schemes and stats are a lot easier to score once you've slaughtered the opposing crew!

I'll hopefully get a follow on to this done some time this weekend.

I tend to be in that school it must be said :D

killing removes opponent resources anyway through removing AP and models, leaving them choices about how to use their remaining models to either try and score or counter attack.

not that I am against scheme running (have had games where Levi only did scheme running) but I do like to kill stuff more

  5. an alternative if you want a sezy girl set that lures and controls you could look at the arcanists and collettes crew. yes she doesnt do the bloodsucking but is a very much lure and control type of crew.

also within arcanists you have Rasputina (female leader of basically a cannibal cult), kaeris (winged fiery mistress), ironsides and mei feng (both tough female beaters) as some of the masters.

I agree with the general gist of what you're saying but just to nitpick the example given there's a guy who wins or places in basically all the tournaments he takes part in and he thinks that Mei Feng is actually really good (third wave gave her a huge boost).

I also think Mei Feng is really good and dont use 3rd wave stuff with her at all :D

probably my favourite arcanist master and have ran her fixed crew at tourneys before (winning one and placing 3rd at my most recent one)

This thread makes me so glad I'm not very competitive.

Thematic crews is what drew me to the game.

my arcanist crews are thematic and do well, so its not that thematic crews are not competitive, its just some people find other builds more so.

if you know your crew you can run thematic and still compete (especially in the arcanists)

  8. I often used fixed lists (my raspy list hasnt changed this year at all) and even take fixed crews fairly regularly to tourneys.

the advantage of a fixed list for me is you dont tend to forget your forces abilities (apart from price of progress, i always forget that) and know how to get the best out of them

    1. Ramos is such a great box, solid master and thematic option the Arcanist leader really is.
    2. Colette really characterful box and build.  Awesome henchman in the box.  Really strong master.
    3. Rasputina is a great starting master, characterful and fun to play with the addition that Frozen Heart protects new players against some of the more 'gotcha' builds around.
    4. [Postulated] Sandeep, he seems very versatile and great fun, has a great couple of in theme (Academics, Poison, Gamin spam) builds.
    5. [Suspected promotion above Marcus] Ironsides is increasing in popularity as folks get a feel for her play style, more tank than beater.  The Captain is a great model and the Oxfordian Mages just got two Book 4 boosts [the upgrade and Sandeep Academic spam].
    6. Marcus simply because people like the beastlord and (barring Sandeep filling this role as well) he is Arcanist's best in your face mayhem beater.  So many fun models (both a + and a -).
    7. Mei Feng falls here because her box is a little weak faction wise [Kang is TT only] and Rail Workers are not summonable.  Still very good master and fun to play but not as brutally satisfying as Marcus and she kinda falls into the... oh and Mei niche.
    8. Kaeris is the 'weakest' master of an exceptional Arcanist line up, I mean if Kaeris is the least master on my list, its a good list.  Burning schtick is a little unreliable [Rasputina is much more reliable as a nuclear threat and Mei is a better speedy damage dealer] and Kaeris herself is a scheme runner master/crew in a faction which has better options for that role [Colette].  She is durable but again I think Ironsides is slowly infiltrating that spot.  Her Fire Gamin are not the most sought after minion's [Sandeep may help this but only a little as there are 'better' Gamin] and Firestarter is nice but a secondary henchman you include when the pool calls for particular talents.

It's a rough list and folks will likely argue with it, particularly some exact placement, but I think its broadly representative.  Overall I'd say Arcanist's have an array of very solid master's and none of them really fall into a truly rare, you never see them position.

wow I need to play in your meta :D

mei feng is my favourite master, winning me tourneys and other podium places.

kaeris is probably 2nd fav and is unlucky not to have won me a tourney.

then comes marcus who is a great beater and finally for me raspy.

ramos, colette and ironsides I occasionally use but for me the above 4 always come 1st and do better at most schemes/strats between them
