I thought the comic book idea was really cool, but the loading times are so long and the ads are kinda annoying. I gave up about 1/3 of the way through the first season. Vince, yeah, it's modern Japanese. I guess we can't expect too much realism. One other thing that was strange was that the daughter of the swordmaker was wearing a hakama, that's the baggy pleated trousers that samurai wore. Kendo and Aikido practitioners wear them nowadays too. They were one of the symbols of a samurai. Non-samurai and especially women were not allowed to wear them. I actually thought it was stranger than my wife did, though. Go figure. :laugh:

Yep. The accent thing is fairly important to my wife. She is really annoyed when there is a "Japanese" character in a movie or TV show that only speaks marginal Japanese. For her it's similar to an anachronism like a wrist watch in a movie set in medieval Europe. There are tons of great Japanese speaking actors, why not use them? Because most English speakers won't notice, of course. She really appreciates it when the actor who is playing a Japanese part really speaks the language well. It's almost like the producers went the extra mile to make sure the language side of the show is authentic. I'm sure it's one of the reasons she likes the show so much. I have to say I really like all the languages that appear in the show. I love the Spanish with "Maya and Miguel," and I was pleasantly surprised to hear Mrs. Petrelli speak French to the Haitian guy. Even though she had a horrendous accent maybe it was in character. She's not playing a French person, after all. :hahaha: As you can tell, I'm a language person. :bounce:

Hey all, Haven't posted here at Wyrd for a while but the existence of this thread made me come back! I just finished up the first season on Netflix--it is in the view-it-now section so you don't even have to wait for the USPS. Not having to deal with commercials or the network's funky scheduling made it even nicer. What I think I like best about the show is that although there is very little that is actually new--we have seen all of the super powers in previous movies or comic books. The story arcs were nothing new, and even I, who has read like one comic book in my life, know that the whole mutant thing and prejudice against mutants was done in X-men. Still, the writers were able to keep it fresh. There were lots of surprises throughout the season, even though it's actually pretty hard to surprise an audience nowadays. We have become so jaded with everything we have seen that a nice surprise or reveal really makes me happy and makes me want to watch more. I also really liked that they would reveal some answers once in a while. The thing that made me come to hate Lost and eventually even dislike the Sopranos was all the loose ends that were left. Sure, in real life we have to deal with loose ends, that is reality, but this is a TV show about superheroes! It does not have to be realistic, dadgumit! I appreciate a little satisfaction in my TV. ;-) So, yeah, Hiro was the fav character in our house, and not only because my wife is Japanese. By the way, if you guys are curious, my wife said that Hiro's accent was excellent, but it was funny because he talked in a very girlish way in the words and expressions he used. I thought that was cool because I'd read that the producers of the show give him the script in English and he translates everything himself. He really owned that character in both languages, which is something that is obviously hard to do. We also saw a nice indication of his range when he played the "Future Hiro." I think his award nominations were very deserved. Second by the way, my wife said that Ando's accent was off, but not as bad as Takei's. ;-) Turns out that Ando is actually Korean born, as you can see on his imdb site. I think Takei did a great job from the perspective of an American, but his accent made my wife wince. :-) And what son does not dream that his seemingly ordinary drudger salaryman father is actually a superhero who is just waiting for the right moment to train you to save the world! That little story arc really touched me as a grown-up son. So yeah, we loved the first season and can't wait for the second. The first few episodes don't have nearly the tension that the later episodes from season 1 had, but I'm expecting that will ramp up in the future.

Care to say on which French forum it has been discussed?

Anyone know if there is a source for these magazines in North America, or somewhere where I won't have to pay more for the shipping than the cost of the magazine? I speak French. :approve: I knew those lost years majoring in French in college would pay off some day!

(Being argumentative and hard headed) Wait, if tin is $5.67 a pound, and a standard mini weighs about two ounces...that's 70 cents for a standard mini. I guess those big warjacks weigh more than two ounces, but still. I know, I know, I'm being unfair. I'm also not completely serious. Not completely, anyway.

I don't know, but I don't think it's only you who has an aversion to upper body clothing, lots of those minis do too. Ooops, sorry, is that not what you meant?

Thanks again guys and girls, Yeah, I'm still having some problems with the photo software. This time, the background is actually a greenish grey, but it comes out as white at the top. I'll keep working on it. Thanks for the brutal honesty, D. That's why I post pics here!

Wow, very cool. What's not to love about an illithid in striped pants? (pronounced: [strai.ped], two syllables) Very nice OSL, of course. I happened to see this green as it was being worked and was excited to see it painted up. You did a great job! I'm going to keep the pic in my "list of images for future reference." Also nice realistic looking metallics on the pirate girl and especially nice whites.

Hey all, I just wanted to say thanks for all the great feedback that I got for my submission. Seems like most people said I did a pretty good job but the photo was not so good. I'd like to know if you think the values-adjusted version is better (on the right) than the original one that I submitted (on the left). I went with the original one for my submission because I thought the colors were closer to real life. The background might have confused some people too, because it's actually a golden brown color, not white. It didn't work so well, I guess. I should have used a more neutral background. I'll probably pull out my photo gear and take another shot at her (pun intended;) ) So if you have any advice for me related to photography, photoshop or even any other painting-related critiques, I'd be really happy to hear it. A couple of notes: she started out with a kind of skull-face bra, but I didn't like the way it looked. It was cool in the concept art but didn't look right on the mini. I also wanted her to look fairly normal, pretty, and girl-next-door-ish, but then with skellies coming out from under her skirt (!!). So I ground the skulls off and painted her bodice to cover her parts. I also tried for both a muted and a limited palette. I used the same color (MSP Desert Sand) to highlight both the red and the green, and then used the same Desert Sand for the skellies, with MSP Red Liner for the shadows on the skellies. I like how the red leather turned out more than the green cloak, personally.

I tend to like stories that are told from a clear perspective too. The Omniscient Narrator tends to perpetuate our cultural fallacy that there is an objective truth out there. I don't really see the world in that way, so books that are told from a specific point of view are just more interesting to me. A book can be written in the third person but still from one point of view. I just finished the first two books of Robin Hobb's new series (a fabulously beautiful, depressing and dark work, btw), which are written in the third person but still are written with the protagonist's point of view in mind. That is, you don't really know what anyone else is thinking, just the protagonist. I think this works well too, and it's a little less disorienting than GRR Martin's style (which I love too, but it can be disorienting a little, especially at the beginning). As for GRR Martin, I'd be happy if everything was told from Arya's point of view. She's my favorite character, I'd (almost) be happy to just read her chapters and no one else's. Almost is the key word, though. Interesting topic.
