  1. My resolution is to paint more regularly. I'm looking to do a few hours (2-3) per week to start and build from there. Minimum is to paint at least a bit (30 min?) every week outside busy season, just to keep some regular habit/progress. A reach goal is to be able to field a fully painted 50ss crew by year end, but the more impressive models like masters and henchmen do scare me and I know that's a hurdle to get through. I have started painting already and am close to done on a few models I first put paint on early in lockdown.

  2. Hi all, my daughter picked up a Pandora box for me for christmas, so I managed to paint the first model. Loved it, the base it's still an idea. I quite like to leave them empty just with the glow, Creepy! I'll post the rest of the crew when done

  3. Happy New Year all! My 2021 New Year's Hobby Resolutions 1. Become proficient using an airbrush 2. Finish all of the 'nearly done' projects. i.e Resser Faction, Space Hulk Set, Zombicide Set 3. Scratch Build a piece of terrain 4. Look after my brushes better 5. Expand my paint selection, use new colours and experiment more With number 2 in mind I pledge the eternally unfinished Lampads that I've been pledging since summer last year! If there's time maybe the Grave Diggers too. I do have a fully built Apex crew sitting on the shelf next to me, but I am not allowed to start them until I finish the minis I've already started. Lets see if I can resist

  4. For January, I'm pledging the 1988 crew as well as the McCabe crew. My painting resolutions for the year: 1) Complete more of my non-Wyrd backlog: my Nasier army for Wrath of Kings, the Slaanesh warband for Direchasm, ASOIAF Lannisters, and Blackstone Fortress. 2) I painted 10 Malifaux crews last year, so paint another 10 Malifaux crews, I guess. 3) Improve at painting skin and faces. If the face is the window to the soul, then most of my models are soulless. That works for Rezzers, not so much for the Guild.

  5. Originally from HI, now in CT, I probably put paint on a model first in the 90s (well a game model, I badly painted a model airplane and a lead cast figurine in the 80s). Have really only had one fully painted army in my life (warmahordes) and that was also very badly done. There were a few other that were close but just missed out due to not having bases done on all models or unpainted conversion bits (I used pencils for missile launchers for orks). Anyway even though I fell off very early last year, I think I'll try again, and pledge at the peon/minion level. Since success is likely better for continued interest i figure I can start off low and if I do better that's great.

  6. My dear fellow players and painters, I’d like to invite you to take part in the 2021 Malifaux Painting Challenge! I am Caedrus, and I will be hosting the 2021 Challenge, which will be starting on January 1st, 2021; the Challenge is all about: Having fun painting! Motivating yourself, and encouraging others. Being part of a great, friendly community. Giving and receiving constructive advice. And, finally: Getting some pigment onto plastic! This isn’t a competition. It’s a way of giving and receiving encouragement, and showcasing your painting, with the end goal of getting those beautiful miniatures ready for the board. All Wyrd-related miniatures are welcome, as is terrain. The Challenge is open to absolutely every painter, regardless of skill. You are welcome here. A model will be considered painted if it is (1) based (even glued onto a black base counts); (2) tournament legal. That means that if it's a translucent, based model, it counts automatically. If it is any opaque material, then the standard is: Every part of the miniature painted, and three colours minimum. If you can manage that, then you can paint! I will be opening the January Challenge just after Christmas, for you to make your first pledge, but for the moment, I’d love for you to put your name down here, if you’d like to take part, and get in touch with your gaming network, and let them know they are invited! If you’ve taken part in the Challenge before, please do share your thoughts and encouraging words for those thinking of taking part! I hope to see you in January! Caedrus.

  7. Thanks a lot, Strangelove! I'll try PicLoad...let's test this! The first Illuminated is already done. Pretty satisfied with the skin, only halfway okay with how the glowy eyes turned out.

  8. Caedrus, checking in for December! First of all, Happy New Year to my fellow Wyrd painters and friends! Second, as always, there have been some wonderful projects this month. Third, the almost-complete 2020 spreadsheet is here. Our Challenge painters completed 7,918 Soulstones of Wyrd miniatures in 2020! And fourth, I completed the Soulstone Miners for 12SS. I didn't make lots more progress on my Mercenary keyword, so that will go onto the January completion list! @Harlekin: I would never have the bravery to use such colours on those bone piles, but they’re gorgeous. I personally prefer the more teal, but they’re both delightful! @Stranglelove: I’m painting those very same models at the moment. I’ve gone with an utterly different look, but now I’m looking at yours, I’m pretty damn envious. Kudos. The alt Taelor is my fave, I think! Also, I love the bright yellows on Fat Cap! @Boomstick: Those models look like a child’s nightmare. That is to say, magnificent. I couldn’t tell you which is creepiest and thus the most wonderful! @Nikodemus: I’m painting some desaturated models at the moment, so I’m loving those models. Your friend is rather lucky! Those eyes are so angry! @Viruk: As always, lovely models. However, you’ve really captured Somer as the Avatar. He’s delightfully hedonistically smug. Such gorgeous colours. I love it. @astapable: I love the grittiness of your drills. I’m such a coward, I can never bear to make my models grubby and dirty! @lusciousmccabe: So, Colette was my first master, and I always have a soft spot for the performers. They’re all gorgeous, but I absolutely LOVE the back of the showgirl’s red and green skirt. Beautiful shading and gradients. Love it. @Purple Mist: The pale, low contrast Sorrows and Poltergeist are wonderful. Was that the GW ghost paint? @Diddick: Your mastery of OSL is only enhanced by your photography. I have to say, the crack along the Obsidian Statue’s belly is just perfect. Magnificent. And so with that (unless there are some late spreadsheet updates), I wish you all a wonderful New Year. It's been a truly strange year, and I'd like to thank every one of you for making it a better place to be! I hope to see you for next year's Painting Challenge, and have a great 2021! Caedrus.

  9. Hey hey, it's Rathnard! January's an interesting month for me - I'm moving cities on the 11th and until then, most of my models and modelling stuff is packed away. That said, I came prepared... Yep - a big box of assembled minis to burn through. So this month I'll aim to paint up what's pictured - the rest of Parker Barrow's core crew (Mad Dog, 3x Bandidos & Doc Mitchell)

  10. Caedrus, ready to pledge! This month, I'll be pledging 10SS of Hannah Lovelace, to (nearly) complete my Freikorps, and finishing up my Mercenary keyword. My 2021 New Year's Painting Resolutions To paint more miniatures than I buy; To get better at Non-Metal-Metal (NMM); and To get better at painting faces and skin. Wish me luck! Have a great January and 2021! Caedrus.

  12. Hey folks. Just stepping back into malifaux after a number of years away mid way through 2nd I last played and the explorers society really pulling me in. I've bought the book and cards plus picked up lord coopers box. As a well noob to 3rd and ES in general is there anything I should look out for, anything I should pick up straight away, anything to avoid.. Any help appreciated

  13. Down to the Last Drop as well as they're durable models and are another source of healing for the crew between Siphon Life and the Rejuvenate trigger. Elemental Backlash also pairs really well with Hive Strike or any discard effects the enemy crew has.

  18. For the month I’m pledging a unit for The Other Side, King’s Empire, not sure how many points exactly. For resolutions I really want to get my army finished for The Other Side, it’s going to take some dedication. Secondly I need to buy less and paint more, easier said than done.

  20. 你们好! My resolutions for 2021 will include: - the complete Honeypot Keyword, - the complete Qi & Gong - some Ten Thunders Versatiles, like Miss Guided, Samurai, Lone Swordsmen... - And then we'll see. For this month I shall pledge at least two Illuminated, who would count for 14 Soulstones, which is more than enough to satisfy my Henchman tier. At least if I understood the rules correctly. Quick question for all you guys: How do you post pictures more efficiently? My attachments are 99% full from the pics in my own painting thread...

  23. My 2021 New Year's Painting Resolutions 1. To paint a couple of brand new crews for my collection; 2. To allign my old M2E crews to new M3E rules; 3. To add in my crews some non Wyrd minis that I bought looking to Malifaux world. 4. To complete Honeypot and Pandora crews I has going after in last part months. 5. My highst ambition and hope: to end 2021 dressing my mask only when airbrushing minis...... A thing I wish to all of you. For January 2021 I'll pledge Iggy (6ss) and Teddy (10ss) for 16ss. Keep youself safe and painting minis. Wishing you all a great 2021.

  25. The current crises of the world are hitting lots of people hard I hope your situation improves! One great thing about malifaux is that it is relatively cheap as far as hobbies go. When I first got into it, I budgeted ~$200 a year (that's ~$4/week) for playing. That can get you two basic crews or one really fleshed out crew with tons of options. Just make sure to include some paints in that plan as well (probably about 1/5 of it will be the hobby supplies). Although I admit I did pick up a lot of things on sale, so it may be slightly more now. You can also play anything on Vassal, of course, including unreleased models.

  28. As far as I can tell, the only possible thing that "If it does so" can refer to is specifically "Unbury into base contact with a Shadow Marker, then remove that Marker". For Shang's Flickering Flames, the "if it does so" clause has to refer to Unburying into base contact with Shang. If you invoke that ability, that rules out the "if it does so" clause in From Shadow. In other words, if Misaki is buried at the start of her activation, the player has a choice between two options: Option A: Unbury Misaki in base contact with a friendly Shadow Marker, then remove that Marker. Option B: Unbury Misaki in base contact with Shang, if Shang exists and the player wants to. The first option is going to going to cause the Mv penalty specified in From Shadow to be applied. The second option is going to Heal Misaki 2 damage and cause Shang 2 damage. If there's no Shang in play, then Option B isn't in play. If there are no Shadow Markers in play, there's no change to Option A. There's no change because the Unbury rules are written such that "Unbury into base contact with a Pink Elephant" will always succeed, even though no Pink Elephants exist in the game--the model can't be placed as specified so it is instead placed in the Deployment Zone, but that's still following the instructions on how to resolve an Unbury.

  29. Good questions! They seem ambiguous, but I would play it... Misaki unburies in her deployment zone (unambiguous, definitely happens) without the movement penalty (ambiguous, but I think this because of the 'if it does so' line). I think the answer for this is the same as the answer to 1. So whatever you rule for the answer to 1, the same answer will apply to number 2.

  30. I think you can reduce the complaint to "it is annoying you can't get [any given individual model] for <$40" without losing anything - it is. The fact that you never could is also annoying, it doesn't make it less annoying. There are good business reasons it is like this, both for Wyrd and FLGSs, but as a player it is a perfectly fair complaint.

  31. This is the thing that sticks most with me about your rant: You never could get Angel Eyes for less than $40 (RRP, anyway). The model was only ever in the M2E starter set with the other Neverborn Half-Blood models (minus Tuco) and all the Guild Asylum models. I understand it being frustrating to not be able to get the model you want, but complaining about not being able to get a single model that was never available singly anyway just seems odd. On the whole, the M3E way of doing things is much, much better. It sucks for people who already have large collections, but its much better for stores, distributors, and new players, and those are what will keep the game alive in the long term.

  32. If you try out a new faction, you'll find that the boxes are pretty great! Angel-eyes specifically is just suffering from the 'not released yet' problem that every game has in a new edition. I'm actually impressed with how fast Wyrd IS releasing models (it has been a year and a half since they launched the edition, and they've released over 80% of models I think). And that's with supply disruptions.

  33. Welcome back. I think that you are mixing up 3 or 4 different issues at the same time. I don't think I've ever seen more than 6months and that was models that were pre-released in Gencon, with their expected release dates, not everything that was released. And players have not helped themselves here, because the outcry when something was announced as "released in 2 months" and then got put back is surprisingly huge at times. Although the books have generally been the next uyears release schedule, which may well be the same again once it has caugth upo from the new editon updates. There are few models that have switched faction over edition changes (Killjoy, Barbaros, Silurids/Gupps/mother, Rattler, Raptor and previously the whole of the bayou faction that existed before the bayou faction existed I suppose). There is a larger number that were duel faction and lost 1 faction (made more noticiable this edition as they removed duel faction from anything that wasn't a master/totem), or were single faction and gained a faction. It can make old collections not work as well as you want (Graves an Tannen losing Neverborn is a common complaint) but the new releases ougth to have less of the issues of buying the wrong faction to get what you want. Wyrd did announce at edition change that they were going to sell M2 boxes for a while to try and avoid your problems, and when new models were released with old models they were allowing people to just buy the new models for a time. (Check out the special order program. Very soon the Blood hunter for Nekima should appear on it, if thats what you need). Although I imagine the logistic of this and the cost of this are pretty lareg for Wyrd, hence them not doign it for long. Angle eyes hasn't yet got a M3 release (at least as far as I remember), so the problems in finding her are the same for new players as old. Probably not helped as it was a while since the M2E starter was released, so there probably aren't that many left in the wild unsold. Finally, it seems a little strange to me to complain that buying individual models is expensive, but selling off your whole collection would go very cheaply. It may well be true, but you might also be able to sell off some of your collection as singles to help fund your buying of other singles or new boxes. I've had to look at my M1/M2 collection and carefully plan what I wanted to buy in M2 boxes, and what I could either not buy, or accept if I get later I'll get some doubles. I've also kept a close eye on the Special orders to make sure that I do get those ones that matter to me when they come up. I'm sure that at some point in the future I'm going to want to buy something that's only available with stuff I already have and decide that my desire for it is great enough that I will need to get the repeat models, but I made that choice a while ago when I accepted that I was going to buy cool things, which will get me mulitples of some things. I almost certainly don't need 3 Ice golems each with a different sculpt, but that didn't stop me getting the translucent Rasputina, and then the winter wonderland set. I feel some of your pain, but claiming it is a "cash grab" does seem untrue, and not really backed up by your issues (which are real issues, and things that in part Wyrd have tried to offer a solution, even if it was time limited). I hope you get your game, even if you can't use Angle eyes, and hopefully you enjoy it. I would imagine that in a collection the size you seem to have, you can field several different crews already, and so get plenty of enjoyment without actually havign to buy anything else if you didn't want to.

  34. That is certainly a fair decision to make. You're under no obligation to support them and their strategy isn't catered towards you, so it's absolutely a fair call to make to not do so. I think Wyrd has offered time sensitive options to buy individual models over the course of the edition change, at least? So they made an effort. I can't imagine that those boxes are enormously profitable though, for the reasons discussed above (a product aimed at veterans, typically the lower spending demographic who are likely to own most of what is on offer via that service), so it makes sense that they've largely wound down those options.

  35. The other games I play keep running into the issue of SKU bloat (i.e. there are far too many individual boxes for any LGS to keep stock of even a significant spread of models in the system at any one time), so I always assumed the Wyrd method of packaging four models in combo boxes was primarily to address that. It's also really new player friendly. No one in my group has played any previous edition, and part of our initial interest was that it seemed like you could buy a core box and one other Keyword box for nearly any crew in the game and bam, 50 Soulstone list. ...of course that ended up being a trap, but a really fun trap to fall into It certainly is markedly less friendly for veteran players, but to be fair to Wyrd new players are both bigger spenders than veterans/returning players and Game Stores are the main vehicle for selling their models, so it is a lot more important to appeal to those two sides of the business than long time customers. Purely anecdotally, but Malifaux certainly seems to be selling well in my corner of the world too, so it doesn't seem to be hurting them. I kind of can't imagine making things annoying for long time players would, either. Bluntly, the value a long term player gives to a game is through being a part of a community. A strong community makes the game more appealing to outsiders and lowers the barrier for entry to new players, who are the primary driver of sales. The fact that you might need to buy $50 worth of models you already own to get one piece you haven't already got isn't likely to be an intentional way of milking you for cash, simply because I doubt any game company is expecting significant income from someone who already owns 80% of the pieces in their given faction.

  36. Also worth noting that Wyrd sales seem to be absolutely through the roof. They kept selling out of things because demand was so much higher than anticipated. I think the M3E model is working well, from their perspective.

  37. Struggling to get through your whole post since it is just one big chain of text without paragraphs, but... Here's my take. I am very sceptical that the sole reason (or even a main reason) Wyrd packages products in unfortunate ways is to increase sales. Rather this is a side effect. Wyrd's packaging decisions seem likely to be based on... What is good for LGS's and distributors. LGS's do not want to stock a billion different boxes. The more consolidated the products, the better for them. New players. New players find it easy to collect (most) keywords. You just buy all the boxes with your keyword on them. Historical biases, sprue sizes, other practical logistics Why do models X and Y have to come in the same box? Because sprue sizes worked out that way. Why have Belles with M3E Seamus? Becaues M2E Seamus had Belles. Etc. Additionally, the second hand market sorts out some of the worst cases (you can buy stuff on Gadzooks as singles, Ebay, etc). Ideally Wyrd would have more generous proxying/conversion standards in their official tournaments, but that is pretty irrelevant. Pretty much the entire New Zealand meta allows custom conversions and sculpts as long as they look good (one guy sculpted huskies instead of Hoarcats for Rasputina and no one objects to playing with them). Models being hard to find is not some under-handed tactic to make them lots of money, I suspect. After all, whenever they package models in an annoying way like this, everyone in my meta just skips purchasing the box. I think packaging like this loses wyrd some sales, but it saves them a ton of money in practicality and logistic costs. That's my theory anyway, but I don't think models being hard-to-acquire is necessarily their plan A. Granted, there are some players who are in really unfortunate positions like yourself. Which I'm sorry to hear that!

  38. One thing to keep in mind is that models that summon can greatly unbalance the game at smaller game sizes. Summoning 7-9 stones worth of models can represent a %20+ increase in your crew size. Crews that can reliably do this every turn have a lot of potential to quickly overwhelm crews that can’t.
