Background:

The ancient city of Malifaux, dark and foreboding, a realm both full of endless possibility and heart wrenching defeat. Reeling from the onset of a strange and virulent plague, an incursion of monsters born from the stuff of Nightmares and months of violent rioting between Guild law enforcement and the Miners & Steamfitters Union has left the city in turmoil. The Governor has dispatched messengers Earth side requesting more Guardsmen to restore order thru Marshal Law. The citizenry blindly calls for someone to rise up and restore order, who will rise? The portents indicate a new player to the game, a new power in the city, does fate favor you?

Rules:

The league will cost $5.00 for each participant. This is a one time payment and covers all games played during the 5 week league. 100% of the cost will go to prize support for the league.

Participants will need to be present on either Thursday, March 15 at 6:00pm or earlier in order to generate their starting locations for the league. The league closes on Wednesday, March 21 at store closing.

Each participant will begin the league controlling between 4 and 6 locations.

All participants will utilize their own Fate Decks for the generation of initial locations.

All flips for initial locations must be made under the supervision of either the League Henchman (Dustin) or Go4Games staff.

The first flip made determines the number of initial locations a player controls.

  • Black Joker = 4 Starting Territories
  • 1 - 13 = 5 Starting Territories
  • Red Joker = 6 Starting Territories

Once the number of initial locations has been determined, players will flip a number of cards from their fate deck equal to the number of initial locations they control (i.e. between 4 to 6) to determine whether they are indoor or outdoor locations.

  • Black or Red Joker = Players Choice
  • 1-7 = Outdoor location
  • 8-13 = Indoor location

After a player has determined the number of indoor and outdoor locations they control, they will then flip a number of cards from their fate deck equal to the number of initial locations they control (i.e. between 4 to 6) to determine the locations they control.

Outdoor Locations

  1. Hags Territory
  2. Gremlin Village
  3. Bayou's Edge
  4. Bogs
  5. Downtown
  6. Industrial Zone
  7. Slums
  8. Quarantine Zone
  9. Ruins
  10. Mine
  11. Pioneer/ Ghost Town
  12. Badlands
  13. Mountains

Black or Red Joker. Players Choice

Indoor Locations

  1. Theatre
  2. Sewers
  3. Arcanist's Lab
  4. Resurrectionist's Lab
  5. Guild Library
  6. Necropolis
  7. Guild Holding Facility
  8. Warehouse
  9. Research Facility
  10. Cave/ Mine System
  11. Ancient Ruins
  12. Large Tavern
  13. Collapsed City Block

Black or Red Joker. Players choice

A player that donates a piece of terrain for the use of the league (must be available for the full duration of the league, at least 3" x 3" in size and fully painted) will be considered a Patron of Malifaux and may choose up to one of their initial locations rather then randomly determining it.

During league games, all participants will "wager" one of their controlled locations each game (unless they do not currently own any).

  • The winner of the game will gain the location "wagered" by his opponent.
  • The loser of the game will lose the location that he "wagered".
  • Salting the Earth Rule: In order to discourage camping or protecting favored locations, games that end in a draw will result in both players losing the benefit of the "wagered" location for the duration of the league. Salted Locations do contribute to the Governor of Malifaux award unless multiple players are tied for most controlled locations. In this circumstance the Governor of Malifaux award will be awarded to the player with the fewest Salted locations. Salted locations may only be "wagered" by a player after all of his other controlled locations have been lost.
  • The Ronin Rule: Players without a location to "wager" (henceforth referred to as Ronin), instead choose one from their opponents list of controlled locations to fight over. In this circumstance, the player that has locations under his control does not "Wager" another location. The winner of this game will either gain or retain control of the selected location. Two Ronin players may not play league games against each other. A player loses the Ronin title once he gains control of at least one Location.

During league games a player may only use the Special Benefit of the Location that is being "wagered" and no others they control, i.e. you may not use the benefit of a "Collapsed City Block" if you "Wagered" control of "Downtown". Full descriptions of a locations benefits are available in your league packs.

Duration of the League: 5 Weeks, with the final games occurring on April 19.

  • Participants are expected to play at least one league game per week.
  • A week is defined as beginning Thursday at store opening and ending Wednesday at store closing.
  • The official league nights are Thursdays from 6:00-9:00pm, however to accommodate varied schedules a league game may be played at any time.
  • A player may play up to two league qualifying games per week, one on the official league night and/or one on another night of the week.
  • In order to play 2 league qualifying games a week, one must be played on the official league night.
  • A league score sheet must be completed by both participants and turned into either the attending Henchman or Go4Games Staff.
  • The final week of the league (April 12-19) will feature "Story Encounter" games. The rules for this encounter will be available at Store opening on Thursday April 12.

The following changes to the standard Game rules will be in effect thru out the league:

  • Players must use the same Master/ Henchman thru out the league.
  • All league games will be Scraps with a 30 Soul Stone Encounter Size (Henchman being played as Masters may use their Henchman Reserve to exceed the Encounter Size in accordance with their rules on page 71 of the Rules Manual).
  • Players may change their crews' composition between games.
  • Once players have determined the locations they will "wager" for the game, both will flip a card from their fate decks. The high card determines the encounters location between the two that were "wagered".
  • Deployment type and Strategies are determined as normal except:
    • Strategies will be generated by each player from the Individual Strategies Chart on page 69 of the Rules Manual. Should both players generate the same individual strategy then the game will be considered a Shared Strategy.
    • The last week of the League (April 12-19) will utilize the rules for the "Story Encounter". Story Encounter Rules to be released on April 12.

[*]Schemes may be chosen in accordance with pages 72-73 of the Rules Manual.

The Rising Power Rule: The player with the largest number of controlled locations receives a :+fate flip during the Deploy Crews step and any one initiative flip during the game.

The Nemesis Rule: Once the league has closed on Wednesday, March 21 the league Henchman will generate a Nemesis for each player. In a game against your nemesis each master (or Henchman leading a crew) gains the following Talent:

  • Nemesis: You gain 1 VP if this model is in play at the end of the encounter and has killed your opponents Master. This VP is in addition to any accrued from Strategies and Schemes and may take your total over 8.

The Prey Rule: Any player facing an opponent that has 3 or more controlled locations than they do may either select 1 additional Scheme for the encounter or receive 2 SS for their Starting Pool.

  • If the extra scheme is chosen it must be both unique (can not duplicate any other of your selected schemes) and announced (if you have the option).
  • The maximum VPs from accomplishing Strategies and Schemes (not for in-game effects such as Jack Daw's Kill Scheme or the Leagues Nemesis Rule) for the encounter remains 8.
  • A player may not exceed his maximum SS Pool by electing to receive the additional 2 SS to his Starting Pool from the Prey Rule.

The league signup sheets, rules, location benefits, prize support, and score sheets are availble in store or at Go4Games.

We look forward to seeing you all there.

Oh and one last thing…(well 2 actually). Next Thursday will start the last week of the league and will feature a Story Encounter Twist to the normal game. The quote of the league (taken from the Go4Games Website) from Joe one of the Ophelia players and a relatively new player:

Lessons learned from my two games last week:
  1. Gremlins excel at making corpse counters
  2. Telling someone you’re playing your first game when you’re playing them for the second time doesn’t work
  3. Threats of buying the Hamelin starter box if you lose doesn’t work
  4. Some models really do need to be killed 6 times
  5. Charging guys into AoE’s isn’t a good strategy
  6. Just because there aren’t many of your opponent’s models left on the board doesn’t mean there isn’t about to be (also learned against Mac)

This after a games against Leveticus and Kirai.

---------- Post added at 12:05 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:02 AM ----------

And finally, today we have hit a few significant milestones for the league:

  1. Those of you desiring to compete in the Painting comp have 1 week to complete your crews (remember it is 30 ss worth of models with each one having to been played at some point during the league).

  2. All games for this week will utilize the special Marshal Law league Story Encounter. I think you all will like the twist it will put on the late game.

  3. Those of you who haven’t played the minimum 5 league games to be in the running for one of the prizes may play “make up” games if desired. It has been a rather hectic league and difficult to get everyone together so figured this was a fair opportunity. Remember though that only a maximum of 10 games will be considered as qualifying.

  4. Those of you who haven’t paid the league fee, need to get that in to.

And of course I will update the standings as soon as I get in tomorrow night.

Reposted from the Go4Games website:

Extra! Extra!

Undead Correspondent, Miss Molly Squidpidge reporting, suspected Arcanist Mastermind Viktor Ramos has been taken into custody by the Guild Guard last night on suspicion of inciting civil unrest. Sources on the scene report that Lady Justice and her cadre of Death Marshal’s were first on the scene however may have been gravely injured during the scuffle.

Hopefully everyone had a great time during the inaugural Go4Games Malifaux league, I know I did.

Here are the final Standings:

  1. Jacob 11 Locations
  2. Tim 7 Locations
  3. Josh 7 Locations (1 Salted)
  4. Mac 6 Locations
  5. Eric 6 Locations
  6. Joe 6 Locations (2 Salted)
  7. Steven 6 Locations (1 Salted)
  8. David 5 Locations
  9. Terese 5 locations (1 Salted)
  10. Daniel 4 Locations (2 Salted)
  11. Soup 4 locations (1 Salted)
  12. Adam 3 Locations
  13. Marcus 3 Locations
  14. Nathan 3 Locations
  15. Ray 0 Locations (Ronin)

With that our new Governor of Malifaux (and $20.00 in Store Credit) is Jacob with his Kirai Crew of Vengeful Spirits

The Best in Faction (and $10.00 in Store Credit each) were:

Guild: Josh with Hoffman and the Mechanical Army

Arcanist: Eric with Madam Colette and her Girls

Outcast: Tim with the Pariah Leveticus and his abominations

In a hotly contested battle for the Ambassador of Malifaux (and recipient of a Teddy) was Mac and his Dreamer Crew. Other notable mentions were Jacob, Josh, Steven, Tim and Nathan.

The Lantern Rouge Recipient (and recipient of a Bloodied Student of Conflict) was Ray and his Lady Justice crew. Ray showed great fortitude by persevering thru the league despite becoming a Ronin mid way thru.

The Master Artisan of Malifaux award (best Painted crew and winner of $10.00 in store credit along with a limited edition Miss Demeanor model) will be decided after online voting has closed at midnight on Saturday April 28 and announced Sunday April 29.

Those desiring to be considered for this competition will need to email pictures of their painted models to NOLA_henchman@yahoo.com no later than Midnight on Sunday April 22.

You are reminded that a 30 SS crew that is fully painted with all models having been played during the league (they only had to be played one time in order to qualify) is required to qualify for this prize. Please submit both individual models (best side please) and a group shot.

I will post these here on the Wyrd forum (link to be provided later) as a poll and allow members of the greater Malifaux community to crown the victor.

Once again I would like to thank everyone that participated in the league and offered recommendations for improving the experience.

The tentative date for the next league is June 14.
