Returning Guild player, fill me in!

Hey all, 
Been living away from my gaming group for a while and as such didn't really play/look up much malifaux. I think the last time i played was when the brutal emissary sculpt was being revealed. Now that i've moved back home i'm looking to get back into the hobby. I haven't played with anything in wave 3 or seen the new schemes. So please fill me in on what's good, keeping in mind that my particular group tends on the side of very competitive when we play tabletop games.

  • Has Lady Justice gotten less one dimensional? Is she better now?
  • What's changed with Sonnia? The last time i played with her i was playing around with burying papa loco to keep his positives to damage on sonnia..any new strategies with her?
  • Is the new master (Nellie) good? What crews does she take/what are her good upgrades?
  • Is frank still amazing/nearly auto include in alot of lists?
  • Any new minions/enforcers/henchman that stand out?
  • What are the new powerful synergies in lists people are running?
  • In general, what are the stronger masters/lists and what are the weaker?

I know that's alot of stuff, any news/info is helpful just to get my toes wet and help me figure out my first few purchases aswell. Anything cool that's happened with guild that i haven't asked feel free to include aswell.

Lady Justice kicks ass now. She still cleaves stuff in half but she got an upgrade so she is basically impossible to lock down with cheap stuff since she can place attack then place so she has a lot more mobility now. 

Nellie is good, she messes with enemies and supercharges beaters. Considered strong. 

Sonnia is still Sonnia but got a super nice upgrade that allows an extra strong companion for any witch hunter. Edit: Loco's buff goes away if he buries so slight nerf, now he needs to stay out and about.

Thalarian Quellers (minions) can remove enemy suits and make your own model ignore all reductions, they make any old (non master) beater into death incarnate. A debt to the guild is a new upgrade that is stupid strong, take at least two but it's max three otherwise si might take it on every model in some of my lists.

McMourning can hire beasts and Lucius got an overhaul and a new nice upgrade, both of them are great fun but probably not tier 1.

Frabcisco is still great but several other henchmen got dropped to 8ss to compete better. Basically just a major faction buff. Jury (new hench) is sick I see a lot more lists without Francisco because now he has competition.

Justice got better since she can wipe out any model that has no trigger to push away or end her activation.

Sonnia didn't change at all but got slight buff via 12'' Chain activation with any Witch Hunter model

Nellie good scheme runner and fits already everywhere. But she isn't a beater and has very low damage output so preferably to hide. All upgrades except mb Merc since Guild models same valued as Mercs and the is no need in them.

Frank is still auto-take model. Nothing changed.

Jury (Henchman) best Justice friend on table and in lore. Others are more situational

Synergies in not the best thing to discuss since its all based on your local meta.

In general :
Lady Justice - great beater

Sonnia - nothing changed

Hoffman - with ability that armor can't be ignored in power-loop bubble almost unkillable

MacCabe - become more flexible than he was before and compared to other Guild masters it's our Sandeep :Guild:

didn't saw Lucius or McMourning so can't tell anything about them

Nellie - great scheming-control master and fits almost everywhere unless there is a heavy beater or heavy summoner against u.

Lucius got an extensive errata, the Scribe was nearly totally rewritten, and the rest of his box was reduced in cost (and Dashel got a 0-cost patch-upgrade to cheaply summon those cheaper Guild guard). Long story short, he works as intended now. His native 0 is now an aura of interact-while-engaged, making him a specialist in schemes Guild used to have to shun. Witchling thralls are very tanky minions (they’re meat peacekeepers, rare 2, slightly shorter threat range but Ca attacks, impossible-to-wound in the place of armor) custom built for Lucius and core in almost all his lists. He and his crew are a bit fragile in today’s meta still, and want to score earlier if they can.

Nellie you can think of as a henchman-obey master, but she targets enemies and so her card requirements are higher (she has a trigger that a friendly engaged with the target may also take a 1AP close attack). She also has several push abilities, friendly and enemy. Last year she was our only option in competitive play; this year she’s still good but other masters aren’t penalized as hard.

Opinions split from here: some swear by the old standbys of wave 1 in this murder-friendly GG2018, some prefer the flexibility of McCabe. McCabe has a better Black Sheep henchman now in Master Queeg, a favorite of him and of Hoffman for giving positive flips to models with upgrades, and of Lucius (Queeg’s aura drops 1AP interacts to 0s, Lucius adds don’t mind me; a spam list can make it rain scheme markers).

Hoffman can occasionally be seen now in the competitive ranks, mostly proving that Eliminate the Leadership is not in fact free VP. Lucius is still a choice of player and/or meta and/or odd scheme pool, so is rarely seen but gets work done when he is. (For example, my meta for some reason loses its collective mind when faced with new Dashel tying up half their activations just by summoning a fresh Guild guard into the correct spot. New Lucius is best for facilitating this.)

McMourning himself is not in favor by fluff as well as mechanics (ask your local Lady Justice for a fluff update*), but one of his new upgrades allows him to hire in beasts and academics in the name of research! People have been situationally enjoying this. Same ‘bet you didn’t expect that from Guild’ philosophy he always enjoyed, expanded.

 

*As for the fluff updates earlier than 2017...

Id agree about mcmourning, I think he is tier 8 or so.  I still think lucius could surprise some people, especially with monster Hunters and thralls.  I've hung with powerhouse masters like nico with him really well.

I think that noone has mentioned the buff to LLC is a big deal to guild.  That's a big one in my mind.

I don't believe the gg2018 was as kind to perdita as some other guild masters.  I'd probably say she and Lucius hang about the same now, below Nellie, sonnia, and lj.  I don't consider Lucas or Mcmourning guild masters tbh, and think they are much better in their other faction.

As far as powerful syngeries, I'd say I really like Belle's in Nellie and sonnia lists.  The death Marshalls recruiter with lj is nasty too.
