Wastrel, Cards Up A Sleeve

The Wastrel has an ability called Cards Up A Sleeve which says "At any point, this character may place one Twist Card from her Control Hand face up on the table in front of her.  While the Twist Card is face up, any player may discard a card from their Control Hand to Cheat Fate with that card instead of a card from their own Control Hand."

I feel because it says "at any point" that I can use this ability as a response but others believe it would have had to be loaded beforehand.  For example, a party member is struck with an attack and does not have Twist card high enough to avoid the hit.  I believe that I should be able to place one of my Twist cards down for him to use to avoid the attack provide I have a Twist card that would be high enough and the party member would have a Twist card to discard.  Other players believe that I have to load the Twist card to the table before any of the cards are flipped essentially believing that my power does not have the ability to interrupt the potential outcome of a duel in progress.

I was curious if the power works the way I am thinking it does or not.

Thanks.

That is the correct way to read it.
