Kromp
Hi everyone -- Some friends and I are just getting started on TTB 2e (having never played 1e). Just one quick noob question: Under what circumstances could a character on a non-magical pursuit (e.g., Guard, Criminal, Boomer, Scrapper) gain access to counter-spelling and actually be able to perform things like magic shielding and so on? Thanks!

Thanks! You just take ranks in Counter-Spelling and there you go. You don' t even need ranks in a magical pursuit to learn skills like Sorcery or Necromancy or even to cast spells. The magical pursuits just make such things easier.
Kromp
Beautiful -- thank you! In what sense do the magical pursuits make such things easier? We have at least one guy in our group who has always and will always play casters in whatever game he plays and I'd like to make sure he know what kind of bang he's getting for his (magical) buck in TTB.
cryptfeller
Off the top of my head, various Pursuits either start you with a Grimoire (so you can pick the Magia and Immuto you'd like) and offer talents that aid in spellcasting. Like Dabbler can get Tomes added to Sorcery duels (if my memory is correct.) Also, the On The Path abilities can help with spellcasting too, like drawing a card when you fail a magical duel in Dramatic time. (That's just from Dabbler, I'm sure other Pursuits have interesting abilities as well.)
spooky_squirrel
You gain access to abilities that provide TN modification (such as adding necessary suit to the cast) when advancing the pursuit, magic-related benefits while on the pursuit, and have a grimoire at creation if you create as a spell-slinging pursuit.
