Complementing Master for Yan Lo?

Dear Ten Thunders experts,

Advice needed! :) I'm usually an Arcanist player who recently picked Ten Thunders as his second faction. Mainly because I really like the art style of his miniatures (and because what I read about his mechanics seemed quite unique and interesting to me), I just picked and painted Yan Lo & friends. In addition to his crew box I got Toshiro, Izamu, two Komainu and the Lone Swordsman. Although I didn't have a chance yet to try him out (and thus no idea what schemes/strategies the stated crew could handle well), I would really like to already start work on a second Ten Thunders crew - to have at least two options after announcing TTs as a faction.

Sooo - what I would like to hear your opinion on are the following questions:

  • Which kind of strategies/schemes does Yan Lo typically struggle with (if any)?
  • Which other TT master/crew could fill these gaps best?

Although I am looking for a crew that can do the things Yan Lo can't, overall "power level" isn't really an issue - so please feel free to also recommend models that might not be considered top tier in general, as long as they complement the play style of the aforementioned Yan Lo crew.

Thank you very much for your time!

In my experience, Yan Lo is best at area control type strategies. Lightning Dance allows you to reposition enemy models a pretty long way, and it is the best action on his card. He also has an amazing heal, combined with the ability to resurrect tanks like Izamu and Yin, that can make his crew very hard to put down. I haven't played any games with his new upgrades yet, but being able to Lightning Dance as a 0 + the addition of Instinctual is extremely exciting to me. So, yeah, area control is great, the ability to put an enemy that you want to die in base contact with Izamu is great, and those are the things Yan Lo is best at.

I would say that Shenlong or McCabe are his best partners, as I feel like they are both good at more scheme-y type games.
