Mercs for Nellie

Beta

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Nellie is on her way to be released soon (and I hope it won't take too long for her to be available in Europe) and I definetly plan on buying her.

Regarrding Guild stuff I have more than enough, but when it comes to Mercs I have zero. Since Nellie likes Mercs and I'm also very interested in branching out to Outcasts (Parker, Vics) some time later this year, I'm wondering which Mercs I should get for her.
Are there any models which are an absolute must get? (Restriction: It would be great if I don't have to buy a hole crew box to get a single model out of it)

Here are some of the Mercenaries I have been considering with her.

Performer from Arcanist can take advantage of Nellie's activation control, and can detonate scheme markers- of which Nellie's crew can make a lot.   Sirens call in general is a solid ability and at 5 stones she is a steal.  Potentially reactivating a Witchling Thrall is just icing.

Bishop is big strong and fast.  And wouldn't mind being even faster.  He also pairs well with Phiona if he targets willpower, and cage fight is real scary if Fransisco or a Guardian are buffing his defense.

Taelor would always be fun especially if you are worried about dealing with enemy summoners.

Generally we shoot well enough as it is, what Guild wants is more close combat punch to keep the enemy on their toes.

Nellie can be played just fine without any mercs. You aren't really in a hurry to get any.

Yeah I know that she can run fine with Guild only...but if I get some Outcast mercs I can tell myself that I now have to buy some Outcast masters ;P

Nellie seems like a good exscuse for that. Next up buy Leveticus and realize that you may need every undead and construct in the game. Hmm, now you have models from everyfactiob, time to just finish off you collection with the odd hundreds of missing models ;)

Haven't used trappers with Nellie but I dig them in general.

I'm not sure what edge the strongarm would have over in-faction choices in the same price range. It can charge without LoS or something?

It ignores models and terrain when charging, and can do so while already engaged. I debated between the Strongarm and Peacekeeper for a long time. I settled on taking both.

Haha, sounds like the right thing to do! I can imagine different applications for those two. Sounds like a good combo with a mounted guardsman if they're allowed to bring them when they charge. Very decent alpha/disruption potential.

Burt has given me a consistently solid performance, especially if he has something cheap to pass attacks off onto with Slippery; either Clockwork Traps or Guild Hounds.  Hannah combos quite nicely with Phiona, being able to copy Look Out! with Make a New Entry.  She can also make use of the Reporter's Exclusive Interview and Corroborating Evidence, and the Witchling Thrall's Aetheric Blast.

The damage track is 2/4/6 or with an initiating Charge Up (0) action 3/5/7..

That is pretty respectable. :)

I wonder if Nellie could even make a freikorp specialst useful. Extra damage from debt on all those blasts from a fast specialist could be interesting.

So far I've tested:

Bishop: Absolutely incredible with Nellie. I'm enjoying pairing him with Francisco and Abuela. Give the hat to Bishop, push Abuela with (0), then walk. Have Nellie give Abuela fast, drop a scheme marker in base, blink Bishop up with Hot Off The Presses (roughly 6" of free movement), then hand him fast. Then you can have Abuela (0) Bishop to take another walk. You get roughly 7 AP out of him turn 1 and can keep blinking him around later on. He's also really good with Phiona if you get out the cracked condition.

Trappers: They're always pretty great, but often don't feel necessary because we have Austringers.

Sue: He's always great, especially against casters. Debt + Fast + Possible heals from Nellie make Sue pretty fantastic for not having the merc tax. Fun fact: You can take Sue with Lucius, Abuela, and a Terracotta Warrior to give him Rapid Fire or Diestro. Fun times will be had.

Anna/Hannah: I love these two in a lot of cases. More card draw, 3+ Ca6 min 3 attacks, and more? Yes please!

Librarian: I'd really only take her with Hannah, but then I'd rather Anna instead of the Librarian. She's not bad, just not as good as she is in outcasts.

Taelor: Great, especially against summoning. A fast, debt wielding Taelor is brutal.

Johan: Budget Taelor. He's also lovely. Really can't complain for 6 stones.

Bloodwretches: You still pay the merc tax, but it's pretty fun to hand them fast so you can charge, do +1 damage, and get card draw.

Convict Gunslinger: You can reposition him and give him fast, which helps out a ton. I'd still rather have Sue though.

Hans: He's a pretty great totem slayer. You can move him around a bit better with Nellie.

Killjoy: Why would you take him? We don't want our models to die.

Ronin: Disguised is fun and so is Stand Ground, but their actions are very meh. Nellie really likes making great models even better.

Big Jake: He's pretty nice at-cost.

Envy: He consistently performs well beyond my expectations.

Strongarm Suit: I'm not a huge fan of the guy, but with the hat/Nellie's healing/free AP, he gets pretty obnoxious.

Within the Guild:

Dr. Grimwell: Great. You can get him up the board and get him a focus for Lobotomy. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of him.

Nurse Heartsbane: Really suit greedy. She's pretty fine with Sonnia though.

Francisco: Need I say more?

Abuela: A solid model that loves more AP/free mobility. You can do all sorts of things with her.

Austringers: Still very, very solid models. They like fast just as much as others.

Phiona: She's brutal and great with Transparency.

Master Queeg: More scheme markers? More 0's? If you say so....

That's a neat trick I hadn't thought of. Although, it would be even more fun to give Diestro to Emissary.

-> hmm, i really don`t like his 4" walk and 1" engagement range, would have to try him more

Trappers: They're always pretty great, but often don't feel necessary because we have Austringers.

-> but Austringers lost range and can`t be deployed from the shadows - they both have different jobs to do imo

-> I would say Sue is more a totem killer than Hans^^ But yeah, nothing to add, cool model, and very useful

Anna/Hannah: I love these two in a lot of cases. More card draw, 3+ Ca6 min 3 attacks, and more? Yes please!

-> You still need to pay the merc tax for Anna, am I right? Want to try her more often, but feel like she`ll shine the most in certain match ups, otherwise the Stones might be better invested elsewhere

I like the double Arcane Reservoir with Hannah, and the possibility of copying a death marshals pine box with her, but I wonder if she`s the model a Nellie crew needs

Librarian: I'd really only take her with Hannah, but then I'd rather Anna instead of the Librarian. She's not bad, just not as good as she is in outcasts.

-> Again, different roles? Librarian can heal, question is, do you need that with Nellie? The suit stripping can also occasionaly come handy

Taelor: Great, especially against summoning. A fast, debt wielding Taelor is brutal.

-> yeah, against summonig, constructs and Tyrants, you gotta love her Hammer^^

Johan: Budget Taelor. He's also lovely. Really can't complain for 6 stones.

-> good all rounder, there`s a reason so many people take him even with a merc tax

Bloodwretches: You still pay the merc tax, but it's pretty fun to hand them fast so you can charge, do +1 damage, and get card draw.

-> never seen them on the table yet, will have to think them through, but I´m not sure they are worth it if you pay one stone more...

Convict Gunslinger: You can reposition him and give him fast, which helps out a ton. I'd still rather have Sue though.

-> I honestly don´t know why I would ever take them :/

Hans: He's a pretty great totem slayer. You can move him around a bit better with Nellie.

-> could be an interesting choice if you want to get upgrades off of hencman, also outranges every other sniper. Ignoring LoS blocking markers and the like could also be handy, although match up dependant.

Killjoy: Why would you take him? We don't want our models to die.

-> people seem overhyped on Killjoy, I don`t think Guild has any use for him

Ronin: Disguised is fun and so is Stand Ground, but their actions are very meh. Nellie really likes making great models even better.

-> You could build a nearly non-chargeable crew, and they ignore armor, will try them when I get my Nellie box

Big Jake: He's pretty nice at-cost.

-> very solid scoring model, could bring something in a crew Guild has normally no access to, interesting

Envy: He consistently performs well beyond my expectations.

-> free focus, yay^^ And more damage for scheme markers

Strongarm Suit: I'm not a huge fan of the guy, but with the hat/Nellie's healing/free AP, he gets pretty obnoxious.

-> oh, he hits hard and charges without restrictions, I love him^^

But yeah, many options and possibilities to explore with Nellie, really excited to get my Outcast models rolling again^^
