Lazarus - still worth it if I have no other constructs?

I'm considering getting Lazarus, but the Assimilate action is a bit of a concern.

I'm running von Schill and the Viktorias, so I don't have the constructs of a Levi crew - so I don't have any constructs he could copy off.  I have a few Guild constructs which doesn't help me...

How important is this ability to his value?  Still worth getting otherwise?

I'm considering getting Hannah, and while I could run those 2 together to make use of it that's an expensive pairing, but for now let's assume I don't get Hannah...

Lazarus is pretty great, regardless of the zero. He's slow, but super durable, and if you want a good shooter, then he fits the bill. His grenade launcher is fantastic, especially if the blasts end up mattering, and autofire can really turn a game if it goes off well (note that he can use it to fire on different targets). He combines really well with Vanessa, who might find her way into a Viks list (being a sister), since she can squeeze extra shots out of him, and Hannah can copy his assimilate, and then use it to make him take an extra attack as well - also good! She can also make use of his self repair (I think? I might be wrong about that...) His only drawback, for me, is his speed. I normally choose between him and strongarm in Von schill list, depending on whether I want ranged firepower, or a bit more mobility and melee. Note that friekorps models don't care about his blasts, which is a nice perk now and again. Basically, he's great even if assimilate wasn't on his card! Outcasts don't have many constructs at all, but the interaction with Hannah and assimilate is fantastic. For example, if Hannah has I pay better Lazarus can discard for focus, autofire on his turn (or just shoot twice), retaining the focus, and then Hannah can make him take another focussed shot - that's fantastic! Still good without Hannah though! He is just a great, durable, shooty dude.

Isn't that how a Malifaux addiction starts though?  Just give in ;)

I found the assimilate ability quite situational but he is very good even if you don't make use of it. He is a very tanky shooter and can troubleshoot a range of issues by himself. Since in melee is damage spread is the same (not fantastic but not even low) he is no slack in melee either. Plus he can trigger area damage as well.

The high number of wounds and arm +2 in a environment where a average damage spread is 3 on moderate make him takes on average one damage per attack. That you can then heal trough your tactical ability.

My plan with Leveticus is usually hitting him with abominations for extra cards and then heal him with his tactical ability. Plan I egregiously forgot to apply yesterday and I was shocked I was constantly running out of cards.

If you have no intention in getting Levi then get Hodgepodge Emissary and 'ignore' Assimilate action unless you can copy something from enemy models. Viks Conflux allows Lazarus to be pushed plus get Focus which is enough to consider it for heavy shooting model like Lazarus.

Having been on the receiving end of a Lazarus barrage, his assimilate is the least of my worries. That gun is nasty and even with armour ignoring stuff he takes a bit of effort to shift. He looks like a solid mercenary for most factions, so paying 1ss less for him seems like a steal from my point of view. You're definitely paying for melee & durability too so I guess it comes down to your personal preference on specialised vs generalist models.

Thanks for the info all!

I took the plunge and bought Lazarus....

.....and Hannah.....

.....and the von Schill box set (well, I don't have a steam trunk....and I wanted a trapper....and I only have metal models so far.......).....

....and the hodgepodge effigy....

....and Scion of the void.....

....and Sue......

....and the Tara box set.....

I blame Wyrd entirely.

This is just one step before you buy Levi. Trust me.

Since Leveticus has zero support actions (really zero, he is just a beatstick that jump around resurrecting), you can play him virtually with anything that strike you fancy. Usually other models support each other but playing him with self sufficient models is also fine.

There is a very limited interaction between him and Rusty Alice you can completely ignore.

Probably you want to have some sacrificabile undead models to use is zero action with but isn't so necessary. The other tactical action is too steep to use (sacrifice a friendly construct to draw cards) so isn't really used. Some can argue you can do it with ash and dust but there is limited feasibility.

Leveticus is fun to play because of his resurrection mechanics, but don't expect him to synergize with his crew. He doesn't. This is why you have a large pool of possible models to hire. If you take models supporting him is probably better.

Terracotta warriors to swap upgrades, watchers to negate covers, etc.

Since also when something dies isn't a big deal for him or his crew (apart for the hollow waives) you can virtually sacrifice any of them.

Levi is great fun.

I've played probably 15 games with Lazarus, and Lazarus has used Assimilate maybe 5 times. Maybe. Hannah loves copying it to give him an extra shot though. And yes she can copy his heal, considering that the trigger on Make an Entry lets her copy (0) actions off of Friekorps models (which is also why she can copy Assimilate, or Von Schill taking his shirt off).

How does that work?  Hannah copies his assimilate, targets Lazarus to copy the grenade launcher, but Hannah would then attack, not Lazarus.    And Lazarus can't assimilate himself.

Duh - you're right! It is still AN extra grenade launcher shot though... I was getting mixed up with Vanessa and Hannah!
