Help me find a crew

Okay - here I am still demanding from you. In my last thread I hinted that I want to break out from Gremlins (but felt unhappy about various aspects). Since I want those two subjects free from each other (since the last thread is a little bit on the ;__; side) I created this topic.

Since I don't want to fall back in the "the ideal crew"-trap and become unhappy again; I will take a different approach now. It is the same I had with Brewmaster and the same I had with Ophelia, having with perodering Sammy and now having with Wong. The concept took me by surprise.

All I had in a picture in my mind with seeing them... it might be not their playstyle, but this was me having seen them:

Brewmaster: Play drunken Gremlins and drink with your enemy... also Kung Fu, why not?

Ophelia: I shoot you and than I shoot your corpse and than I shoot the remains of your corpse and than...

Sammy: Look at that adora... ah Voodoo! Get that out!

Wong: Look at all the Fireworks and Magics I have. I will enjoy them, you won't.

Burt Jebsen: I am all your 80s heroes mashed together and I have a big gun... and that good lookin' hairdo.

Since I became A LITTLE more seasoned I figured out that expectations don't go with the actual playstyle. So for the sake of keeping up with that I closed the PMF page and rather would love you to give me the thing that got you fired with non-Gremlin Crews So I can get my break-out crew and might get excited over a thing I didn't get excited, because I read too much tactica.

So rather than agonizing what goes well with what I want to take now the adbice several players gave me and just become excited again. Heck even if I'm later worried I don't have to Play 50 SS games and can it tone down and go from there...

So please Forum, take it away. list your non-Gremlin Crew you had been excited about before purchasing and tell me with one sentence why so. (see example above). Okay, this should it be for me... honestly...

I know you wrote this as a fluff question but it still sounds like you haven't found and/or succeeded at the mechanic that just makes you giggle with glee when it works. Mine seems to be 'bet you didn't expect that from this model in particular', whether it's using machine puppet to bounce the AP around to whichever construct I feel like it needs it this instant, or copying actions off of any-darn-construct-I-please-with-CA+2-also or...ok, it's the copying abilities. Card-intensive. Impractical. Oh, so funny. And yet it took a few games before I succeeded at the card draws necessary. So. Is there anything your gremlins CAN do, but just haven't been able to, yet, that looks like it might be cool?

It's not that I wrote that to shelf my Gremlins, because they can't do "A"... or sth. I just want to see other models on the table. I took a deep dive with Gremlins already starting with Malifaux, but sometimes you want to swim back to the surface, get a nice breath of fresh air, just to delve deeper back again ;). The Gremlins being the water and the fresh air the non-Gremlin Crew. The "It might be not their playstayle" is more of a "fallback" thingie, since I am inexperienced and I might discover more tricks :).

Well, a semi-natural extension could be Marcus.  He can offer a lot of variety because he can hire any Beast in the game, many of which are located in the Gremlin faction (assuming pigs).  As a result, he's very adaptable to a wide range of scenarios depending on the beasts you have available for him.

He's also my favorite Master, and one of the cooler characters in the fluff.  This may or may not factor into my recommendation.  He's also the Master that hooked me into Malifaux, and I was excited about him just from the look before I ever started playing (waaaaaaay back in 1E).  I still use my old metal Marcus and crew to this day.

Zombie Call Girls, top hats, a portmanteau character of Jack the Ripper and the Mad Hatter, Terror, 3 models all able to get death strike abilities in the starter box, A sadistic yet strangely adorable leprechaun wielding scissors, you can't go wrong with the Shadows of Red Chapel.

I mentioned Zombie call girls right?

I don't think that anyone has ever used Pigs with Marcus when playing a serious game. Other than that, I agree that Marcus is extremely versatile and fun Master to play.

But my suggestion would be to go to the Ten Thunders. As you already have Brewie, once you get some TT stuff you could play him on the TT side as well. Shen Long offers a very different playstyle from Gremlins (very cerebral yet fluid), his starter includes an amazing Henchman and is all in all a pretty nice starter. Expand with Tengu and Katanaka Snipers and you have a nice core able to tackle most Strategies and Schemes.

I realize that this didn't fit into your format for suggestions but I'm not convinced that one-sentence slogans really are the best way to choose a crew to be honest.

Knowing what kind of playstyle do you prefer (in other tabletop games, video games, RPGs etc.) would make finding an "ideal" crew easier. When I bought my first crew, it was Sonnia back in 2009 based only on thematic appeal, but after a few starter crew games I realised that I dislike her squishyness and focus on range, so I switched to Seamus, then McMourning, who were perfect for my usual tanky, mid-close range playstyle in many other games.

It might be, but I am adaptable... I would not say that I have a prefered plastyle. For example I have a small Circle Crew in Hordes, had a Blood Angels 40K army, since they had Caster Cybots... it really depends from game to game. I like Brewies "passive" style of just let your opponent pass out quite a bit (since it is something new), but I am looking Forward to field Ophelia for some ranged shooty, shooty and looking forward to the masters of magics (Wong). I just need some glowing inouts, since it helps to decide where to dip your toe. All have something exciting on Malifaux... so it is hard to just pick one... :D

Alternatively, I would suggest posting in this thread:

ZL's responses to what people have said about their gaming habits are surprisingly insightful, and might hlpe you work out an alternative crew you fancy trying ;)

I will try it out now. Thanks for linking this :)

I picked my first box based on the looks of the models.

Then I got my hands on a copy of the big rule book and read the 2-3pp fluff intro for each of the masters.   Two spoke to me, only one was easily available.  Perfect choice for me.

Later started listening to "Before we Begin" podcast.  What was originally my second-to-last faction choice has become tied for second.

Ramos: Lot of Constructs!

Mei Feng: Burning Constructs!

Hoffmann: Bigger Constucts!

Raspy: Cool lady with coldhearted - Constructs!

Lady Justice: A cool, blind Lady with a sword and a Judge without mercy.

Crews containing Taelor: Cool Lady with a big hammer.

Crews containing The Captain and/or Johan: Smart Guy(s) with (a) big hammer(s).

Von Schill: Good old days of honour and glory.

Lynch: Gamble for your life - or the life of others.

Lucius: Ignorant bliss.

I don't want to create a new thread; so I hope some of you ate still reading this. I found my Crew -- but I want to tell you about tonight.

I agreed with my local Henchman to play the Carver scenario (I provided the painted model) as 35 SS with NO added Schemes & Strategies. Just the Carver as Story Encounter. I wanted just to get more into the game and not worry about a lot of stuff (more things to come, though). Though I lost (2 - 0, since the Carver went to the other side, right before I could give the kill) I had TONS of fun; why? I took an Ophelia Crew with an Slop Hauler (proxied by Wesley, though they are preordered, don't you worry about that :D)) and Francois was KILLING it!

Since the Carver was with my opponent and Teddy was too close to my stuff I took Soulstones after Soulstones with Francois to generate is repeated shooting and took out a Teddy in Turn 1 (which made his Baby Kade very sad...). Also Ophelia (with 1 Wound remaining) managed to pass three WP duels against Pandora and din't meet her fate through Misery (though time was not on Ophelia's side).

This reignited my love for maaaa Gremlins... (though I sadly had NOT declare Dumb Luck or kill my Gremlins, which was just sad ;__;)... I guess on hindsight I should have since I could have denied a VP to my enemy... oh well...

So why Mei Fang. Because I could take a short glimpse in Shifting Loyalites the Henchman brought along and there he was... SPARKS ... and Gremlin Survivosr ... and Mechanized Porkchops and with Sparks alone I envisioned a Henchman hardcore list and ...

Since Brewmaster is 10 Thunders, ...since I might go 10 Thunders, ... since I already have a Dawn Serpent; I easily could go Mei Fang and when time passes I can add sparks uniting 10 Thunders and Gremlins again, like my first love, the Brewmaster. And even has now an out for Arcanists (eyeing Ironsides... but it's more a distant love)

Also I like Mei Fang, because she seems pretty mobile, and since I lack a IN YOUR FACE master (sure I could go Mah, but I really don't feel that box).

So here is the new and FINAL task next month I want to order Wong's box (and Gracie if I can fit her in), though I want to get Mei Feng, too.

I want to play her as 10 Thunders (so I can get the Wave 1 + 2 upgrades and can play with the brewmaster). I also want to have a Rail Golem (Yeah! Rail Golem!) - I really do.

So what to fill the remaining SS points with (up to 50); in a thematic [if possible] way.

And yes; Mei Feng is final... because SPARKS!!! (Sorry I am excited - again)

Yes Outcasts are welcome!

[P.S.: This is me excited without testing Burt, Sammy, Merris! So I think I'm gonna have a LOT of fun in the coming time :D]

Maybe Sue, cause of his "Ring of Fire".

Oiran`s give you Lure, wich could draw models into Mei Fengs reach. If you have to face self poisoning crews, you could use Performers instead.

There is a Melee model arround, Yamaziko, you should have a glance on her.

The Duo Infernale - Mr. Graves and Mr. Tannen - are always good to have and a Guild Pathfinder gives a little bit of range Support (note that the Clockwork Traps are no constructs, so no Railwalk points for Mei).

Metal Gamins get a hard downgrade a few weeks ago, they are Foundries but when you already hire the two gremlin Foundries and the Railgolem you should gives them lesser attention until you really enter Arcanists.

I didn`t mention the Thunders and the Metal Gremlins earlier, cause i get from what you said, that you wanna have a crew free from green slimers. Otherwise i would have told you about them and offer Zoraida and the NvB line, wich is still a possibility after a 10T expansion and not the baddest idea, if you take the two Misters.

Well I guess Sparks won't hit for months to come. Until than I might have many more boxes, so I consider it a non-issue and I see sparks as adding even a different aspect to the Gremlin side, so that is a big PLUS in my book [also Henchman Hardcore with it's own theme... basically like a crewbox :D].

I would advise myself against going with more dual factions models [going against Tannen, Graves and Pathfinder], since it would just ease me to the lure of opening yet another faction and I'd rather not do that - my mind is weak. Though not foundry I heard Katakana Snipers are good all around - would they fit with Mei Fang (if not thematically, maybe as supporting her)? Also I like the Samurai models, but I'm not sold 100%, might you have more on them.

Ther eis always the Lone Swordsman.

Yamaziko sounds interesting....

Sue also sounds nice, though I consider him a later on upgrade I can add to the collection (but I'm seeing where you are going :))

So thanks for the first inout. Yeah! As for Outcasts. Would Lazarus work well with the Rail Golem :D?

I know this weak mind problem^^.

I heard the same about Katakana Snipers, sounds like they are the best ranged supporters in 10T.

There is Hans as Merc, but my game mate and me, we are both dissapointed by him. It`s too easy to stay out of his LoS, and without any extra AP, he his a lame duck.

I know, you doesnt want it, but just for completness, Angel Eyes from the Starter box is also a good idea for range support.

The Freikorps Specialist with his Flammenwerfer also hands out much burning, but since he is only avaible in the Von Schill box - except you`re lucky one, getting his metal version - he is also out of play.
